NY Podiatrist Describes Exfoliating Property of Epsom Salts
Epsom salts were discovered in Epsom, England, in the late 1600s and have been used ever since for all sorts of purposes. Don't confuse the stuff for table salt—it's mostly magnesium and has a bitter flavor. One of the most popular uses for Epsom salts is to soothe the sore muscles of athletes and to help remove splinters, explains podiatrist Bruce Pinker, DPM, a foot and ankle surgeon in White Plains, New York. They also have been used in beauty products.
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
Have rough patches on your skin? The minerals in Epsom salts can help. "Epsom salt can reduce the thickness of one's skin if soaking is performed," says Dr. Pinker. "The magnesium sulfate also has an exfoliating effect on the skin which is beneficial." Mix Epsom salts with coconut oil to make an all-natural salt scrub.

Prevention is the Key to Avoiding Foot Problems: Canadian Podiatrist
“A lot of people take their feet for granted, until there’s a problem, but a little ‘preventive medicine’ can help ensure your feet enjoy summer activities as much as you do,” says Darren Woodruff, DPM, who has been in practice in Red Deer for six years. Arguably, the feet are the hardest working part of your body, and when they don’t work well, neither does the rest of you.
|
Dr. Darren Woodruff |
Dr. Woodruff recommends washing the feet daily, taking care to dry well between the toes. It’s also a good idea to moisturize the tops of your feet, soles, and heels daily using a thicker lotion – thinner ones tend to have alcohol as a main ingredient, which can be drying. Avoid putting lotion around or between the toes.

OK Podiatrist Discusses Black Women Victims of Police Brutality
Black women are often left out of the conversation when it comes to the topic of racism and police brutality, and that is a problem Fifth Street Baptist Church addressed recently in its “A Conversation with Sisters.” They talked about the plight of Black women who have been left on the sidelines throughout history.
|
Dr. Sharri Coleman |
The 40-minute event started with Dr. Sharri Coleman, a podiatrist and adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma who hosted the conversation, reading the names of 10 Black women who were victims of police killings, including Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency room technician who was killed on March 13 in her home in Louisville, Kentucky.

GA Podiatrist Featured in Documentary on High Heels
High on Heels examines the cultural significance of the high heel shoe and the power it has to make a woman feel confident, professional, and sexy. The documentary, directed by Adelin Gasana and produced by Lola Kayode, has been released on YouTube as an Atlanta-based collaboration between DocuJourney Productions and Lola Kay Productions.
|
Dr. Cheree Eldridge |
Gasana later highlights a different aspect of high heels—health effects and pain. In the documentary, Dr. Cheree Eldridge, a podiatrist, explains how wearing heels shifts the body’s weight distribution and center of mass, which can cause pain and injury to the feet, hips, and spine.

PAS Stain-Based Histological Classification and Severity Grading of Onychomycosis
Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic's (FASMA) Senior Pathology Scientist and Principal Investigator, Xingpei Hao, MD, PhD, has spearheaded his seventh article publication with FASMA doctors. The study "PAS stain-based histological classification and severity grading of toenail onychomycosis" appears in Medical Mycology. Co-authors of the article are Drs. Joon Yim, David Freedman, Sarwat Siddiqui, David Levine, Michael Tritto, Gina M Saffo, Adam Isaac, and Gene Mirkin.
Based on the analysis of fungal density, distribution, and infiltrating depth level in 858 PAS-positive toenails, the authors created a novel PAS stain-based histological classification system to classify onychomycosis as occult onychomycosis (OO), focal or diffuse subungual onychomycosis (FSO or DSO), focal or diffuse plate onychomycosis (FPO or DPO), focal or diffuse subungual and plate onychomycosis (FSPO or DSPO), and superficial onychomycosis (SO). The severities of OO, FSO, and FPO were graded as mild, DSO, and DPO as moderate, FSPO, and DSPO as severe infections, which revealed that more than 75% of PAS positive toenails were severe infections.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Six Biggest Mistakes Physicians Make When Planning for Retirement: Part 2
Here are six common retirement planning mistakes physicians make that could significantly interfere with a timely and successful retirement:
2. Not Saving Enough: Because physicians are high earners, they usually enjoy a higher standard of living they’d like to maintain in retirement. This reality, coupled with a late start, translate into one very big problem: physicians have less time to accumulate more money. In order to live a comparable lifestyle over an extended retirement period, they will have to find ways to accelerate their savings. While it is commonly recommended that the average person saves 10 percent of their income, physicians will need to save closer to (if not higher than) the 20 percent mark.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Talar OATS Procedure with Fibular Osteotomy
Our podiatrist performed a talar OATS procedure and had to perform a fibular osteotomy to get access to the site (this was not the graft). He had to repair the fibula with plates and screws. Can we bill for the repair? The CPT used for the OATS procedure is CPT 28446. I need help with the fibular osteotomy repair.
Della Roes, Biller, Lake Havasu city, AZ
Response: 1) The osteotomy/repair to gain access for the procedure is not payable as a separate procedure.
2) Make sure you pre-authorize the surgery. Some carriers only allow this type of procedure in the knee and deem it investigational elsewhere.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Robert Sheinberg, DPM
I'm saddened to report the passing of my good friend, Dr. Robert Sheinberg. Our friendship began in 1977 as counselors at sleep-away camp (Lakota) in upstate NY. We later attended NYCPM and graduated together in 1986. Robbie did his residency training in Pittsburgh and San-Francisco and eventually settled in Weston, Florida, where he had been in practice ever since.
|
Dr. Robert Sheinberg |
Robbie was an extraordinary athlete, tremendous coach, champion body-builder, and outstanding foot and ankle surgeon. He was certainly a great friend to many, but most of all, his family was the most special to him. Whenever we spoke, the conversation always turned to his love and pride for his wife Joanna and his 5 children. His big smile and enthusiasm will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Robbie.

Excellent work, Drs. Armstrong and Tan. When podiatrists want to know what role we play in the world today, we can always turn to see how Dr. Armstrong and his collaborators are advancing society and the podiatry profession with statement research and visionary goals. Well done, brother.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY) |
Beginning from my first week in practice, I took 5-10% of every bank deposit and put it into a savings account that I did not touch. When the balance grew, I began an investment program. This system worked well and the earlier you start, the more there will be when you retire. I began in my mid-twenties. The thirty-five to forty years the money was allowed to "percolate" provided the retirement cushion needed.
The magic is the tincture of time. If you can't live on 95% of your income, you probably can't live on 100% either. The second rule is always to live below your means, not above. And finally, clearly distinguish between "needs" and "wants".
Joel Lang, DPM (retired), Cheverly, MD
