ASFP Offers Student Scholarships for Pedal Evidence Research

The American Society of Forensic Podiatry (ASFP) is now accepting applications from students pursuing degrees in podiatric medicine for research projects related to pedal evidence. The ASFP established the scholarship program this year to further interest in forensic podiatry and encourage students to learn more about the practice of forensic podiatry. Up to three $500 scholarships will be offered.

(L-R) Drs. John DiMaggio and Michael Nirenberg

“Forensic podiatry is an exciting, often overlooked field,” said Dr. John DiMaggio, the president and founder of the ASFP. “We hope this scholarship generates interest in the specialty.” ASFP board member Dr. Michael Nirenberg added, “The field of forensic podiatry offers students a lot of research opportunities.”

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
People Wearing Wrong Size Shoes is Big Problem: GA Podiatrist

“One of the biggest problems I see is people wearing the wrong size shoes,” said Dr. Jeane Watson of Gainesville Podiatry Clinic.  “We get it in our head that we are a certain number and we just go for that size, but all shoes have different shapes, and some are made smaller than others.”

Watson mentioned shoes should not fit close to the toe because it can cause toenail problems, blisters or hammertoes, especially with certain styles of shoes.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
EMR Not Worth It for CA Podiatrist

Dr. Bruce Manchel opened his podiatry practice 32 years ago on Tenth Street. Manchel is not retiring but will close his office in Coronado. He will continue his podiatry practice at the San Ysidro Health Center.
Dr. Bruce Manchel

“I thought I had to plan and put the practice up for sale, but young kids don’t want to be in private practice anymore. I’m a dinosaur,” he said. Manchel still handles his practice the old way. He pointed out he does not keep electronic medical records and sometimes he stays behind after the office is closed for a few hours to catch up with the charts. In order to update his records and go electronic, he estimates it would cost him around $30,000.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT
IL Podiatrist Lectures at Spine and Ortho Surgeons Meeting

On Saturday June 13th, The Westin Hotel in Chicago hosted the Spine and Orthopedic Surgeons meeting. Dr. Sev Hrywnak presented his topic titled “Meeting the Metrics for Spine and Ortho Procedures” which focused on metrics such as cost containment, utilization, patient satisfaction, and community DRGs. “The landscape of how a physician will be getting paid is metrics-dependent going forward,” stated Hrywnak. “The data must show that you used cost containment in getting excellent results for the patient."

Dr. Sev Hrywnak

With over 900 attendees, this three-day ASC event focused on orthopedics. It featured many other key speakers including: Billy Beane, popular general manager of the Oakland A’s major league baseball team.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
5 Ways Providers Can Improve Marketing in the Mobile Age

4. Provide tools to encourage the next step.

For instance, provide a scheduling widget so that patients can book time to see you. Think of your patient as a customer lingering just outside your office. Encourage the patient to come in and see you.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Excessive Record Review

I was wondering when does the request for medical records for review become excessive? United healthcare (secondary insurance with Medicare as primary) is requesting medical records on 26 patients from Jan 2014 to the present. Humana is requesting 19 records. I have complied in the past, but the most has been 10. I have a small office and it takes time to print out the records and fax or mail them. Do I have any recourse or is this just a part of being a physician on the insurance plans?

Editor's comment: PM News does not supply legal advice. As a general rule, requests for a small number of charts are the result of a routine audit. Requests for 20 or more charts is characteristic of a targeted audit, meaning that auditors are looking for a particular code, modifier, or place of service. Being audited is an unfortunate part of being a practicing doctor. This underscores the need to maintain comprehensive records that establish the medical necessity and rationale for all treatments billed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Independent Practice is Dead
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

This article states it plainly, "Independent medical practice is dead." I found the following statements in this article quite disturbing, but also true:

1. Medical students are responding to external pressures that are reshaping the medical industry and radically changing doctors' relationships with their patients.

2. Younger doctors see salaried positions as ways to get predictable hours and to help them overcome their...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A
From: Neal Houslanger, DPM

The best way to answer that is to keep records of where your new patients (the life blood of your practice) are coming from. In our area on Long Island, there seems to be many large Yellow Pages that have sprung up, as well a small local Yellow Book. We have found, as I suspect, most practices are getting more new patients from the Internet. Therefore, whave gradually decreased the size of our ads and listings in all these Yellow Pages and local books. I do get some satisfaction from reducing those costs, as the price has gone up each year. We have instead used our marketing budget to invest more in our Internet presence, including updating our Website, which has proven successful. We have also increased our physician referrals.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B
From: John V. Guiliana, DPM, MS

I completely agree with Dr. Kashan's assessment of the decision. I would like to add to this discussion by using my love affair with micro-economics. As Dr. Kashan already emphasized, what I am going to discuss necessitates diligent monitoring and measuring. But why would we hesitate to do that when there's so much at stake with our valuable resources?

The Yellow Pages present one marketing opportunity which needs to be compared to other potential choices. Whenever we are faced with choices of allocating valuable resources, it's only obvious that as we allocate towards one choice, we...
