VA Podiatrist Interviews Plastic Surgeon
Ben Pearl, DPM interviewed Byron Poindexter, MD, a plastic surgeon on some of the techniques that might be beneficial for podiatry, on Dr. Pearl' s podcast, Fit Foot U. Drs. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Zero-Budget Staff Motivators that Beat a Pay Raise
These cost-effective strategies can boost employee morale and retention in medical practices, addressing turnover without breaking the budget.
7. Protect two “dark” hours a week
Constant interruptions tank productivity and morale. Clinicians who tested “quiet blocks” reported faster chart closure and happier teams, according to this roundup on burnout beyond physicians. Pick a mid-afternoon slot twice a week: no phone transfers, no walk-ins, no inbox pings. Nurses use it to stock rooms, assistants catch up on surgical logs, and doctors finish notes—everyone leaves on time.

OBITUARIES |
RE: The Passing of Emory Dalton McGlamry, DPM
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of E. Dalton McGlamry of Stone Mountain, Georgia at the age of 94 on June 14th. Dr. McGlamry was one of the greatest podiatrists of our generation. He leaves an enormous legacy of leadership, journalism, literature, and education unmatched in this profession. Among his many accomplishments were the founding of the Podiatry Institute and editing of McGlamry's Foot and Ankle Surgery Book (now in its 5th Edition) along with editorship of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
|
Dr. E Dalton McGlamry |
Dr. McGlamry served as President of the American Podiatric Medical Association and was the founder of podiatry's first 3-year podiatric surgical residency. He was inventor of many surgical instruments including the McGlamry elevator. Dr. McGlamry was the second podiatrist inducted into the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame and was recipient of the Golden Quill Award from the American Podiatric Medical Writers Association. We send our condolences to his wife Becky, their son Michael McGlamry, DPM, and the entire McGlamry family.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) |
RE: Updating Podiatric Medical Education
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, ME, EdD
I have recently been criticized for my views on podiatric medical education with the same old trite and hackneyed medieval jargon. For example, “It’s easy to criticize….”, “Monday morning quarterbacking…”, “Come join the team rather than sit at home and judge,” “That has not been proven to work in podiatry,” and of course, “Where are your positive suggestions rather than negative disparagements?” The information we get on a daily basis pertains to the 99% residency placement rates. We all know by now there are a lot more residencies available than there are graduating students to fill them. The residency match table has turned 180°. Not long ago, it was students who suffered a blow to their self-esteem when they were left out in the cold by not matching and had to scramble on their own for post-graduate training. Often this involved placement in a non-approved preceptorship of which there were some great ones, but not CPME-approved for board certification through the ABFAS route. Now, residency directors feel embarrassing slaps across the face when nobody chooses their program. The sentence, “Whom did you match with?” has taken on a whole new meaning. Today AACPM boasts a 99% residency match rate for graduating students. What happened to the 1%?
Residencies are funded by Medicare and hospitals pick up very lucrative funds to pay indirect and direct costs which are what the hospital receives for having a resident, and residency directors are funded as well as a resident’s salary. It’s an economic blow to everyone when...
