AT THE COLLEGES |
WesternU CPM Provides foreign-Educated Doctors a Pathway to Practice in the U.S.
Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) developed a program that is making dreams come true and fulfilling lifelong ambitions of helping others. The College of Podiatric Medicine developed the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) Advanced Standing program to provide graduates of foreign medical schools the opportunity to become Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, enter residencies, and practice in the U.S.
|
Dr. Jonathan Labovitz |
DPM Advanced Standing students enroll in intensive months-long didactic learning on podiatric medicine, and then they join the third-year CPM class on clinical rotations and graduate with that class the following year. Advanced Standing students differ from other CPM students because of their backgrounds, CPM Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Graduate Placement Jonathan Labovitz, DPM said. CPM welcomes the cultural diversity and varied life experiences they bring with them.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Use of Glycolic Acid for Dry, Cracked Feet
Peeling dead skin off of your heels might just be one of the least-sexy beauty practices out there, but that hasn't stopped it from going viral on TikTok. Recently, a hack that involves using glycolic acid for cracked feet has popularized on the app, with users swearing that it makes their skin feel baby soft. To find out, Well + Good asked NYC-based podiatrist Suzanne Levine, DPM to weigh in. “It’s legit up to a point,” she admits. “I often say: You have to treat your feet like you treat your face.” She adds that unlike classic pumice stones, which have long been the go-to for foot exfoliation, glycolic acid (and other members of the AHA family) are far gentler and less abrasive, and come with less of a risk of overuse.
|
Dr. Suzanne Levine |
But before you go wasting your favorite (potentially expensive) exfoliating facial serum on your feet, know that it probably isn't potent enough to actually work. “The glycolic acid must be a higher percentage than what you’d use for the face,” says Dr. Levine. Because the skin on your feet is rougher than the skin on your face, it requires more exfoliation power—which is why glycolic acid-infused products specifically designed for feet, like Baby Foot, exist (for what it's worth, though, Dr. Levine thinks that formula is too strong).

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Addressing Physician Burnout
Here are some actions for practices to curb physician and medical staff burnout.
7. Work with staff and communities to confront health misinformation.
Ensure patients and health workers have adequate time for and access to credible information, consistent with the best scientific evidence available at the time. Employees should receive professional education on proactively addressing health misinformation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Maureen Brennan-Weaver, DPM
I am very sad to announce the death of Maureen Brennan-Weaver, DPM. She died on June 14th in her sleep. She was suffering from atrial fibrillation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Adding Services to Fight Inflation
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM
I went to get my car serviced today and learned that the labor fee that the dealership is charging for repairs is now $285 per hour. Extrapolating that into 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, it adds up to $592,800. I’m not sure how many DPMs are able to increase their fees to keep up with what things are costing today?
The BIG question for the past 20+ years, “What can we do to regain our autonomy?” I have suggested many opportunities in the past, including DME, aesthetic dermatology, advanced practice management, as well as concierge medicine, integrative medicine, etc. What are people doing? I hope something.
Bret Ribotsky, DPM, Fort Lauderdale, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1A |
From: Michael J. Trepal, DPM
In a recent posting, Dr. Dale Feinberg (retired), after touting how successful he was financially, ends his lengthy posting by stating, “Looking back at my career, I wouldn’t have changed a thing but in today’s environment podiatry would not be in my sights. The times they are a changin’."
An applicant to podiatric medical school just withdrew their application after doing some research and reading that post.
Michael J. Trepal, DPM, NY, NY

|
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1B |
From: William DeFeo, DPM
Interesting that Dr. Feinberg’s self-professed “proudest moment” was the suggestion that he supposedly had an income greater than a plastic or vascular surgeon. In my opinion, this conclusion represents exactly what is wrong in medicine in general. When financial success is the major goal, to paraphrase Sir William Osler, you have lost the true spirit for which you entered medicine. My proudest moments have been those occasions in which physicians praised my competence and have accepted me, a podiatrist, as their intellectual and academic equivalent as a healthcare provider. Respect for your care is far more rewarding than respect for your wallet.
As I look back on 45 years of podiatry practice, I feel compelled to write about the discussion of parody with medicine. When I read my classmate Dr. Larry Oloff's letter, I couldn’t agree more. Maybe because of my own ignorance, I felt after finishing my residency that I was competent...
Editor's note: Dr. DeFeo's extended-length letter can be read here.

|
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1C |
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM
The calling for retrofitting the colleges of podiatric medicine to educate the same as MD/DO schools, making their graduates eligible for all MD/DO residencies, seems to come with the fantasy that podiatric medicine would actually be a desired and ACGME-approved residency choice, a sentiment expressed often in this forum. That may be what some want, whether or not they have thought it through to what that would eventually look like. In reality it would be the death of any semblance of what podiatric practice currently is.
Even though some of our colleagues opine that podiatric medicine as an MD/DO residency option would be popular, I don’t think ACGME would, as for the most part, ACGME residency choices extant, pretty much have foot, ankle, and leg covered. Yes, trust me, they have it covered. What they don’t have covered is...
Dr. Markinson's extended-length letter can be read here.
