STATE PODIATRY NEWS |
MN Podiatrist Re-Appointed to State Podiatry Board
A Fergus Falls woman has been re-appointed by Gov. Tim Walz to the Board of Podiatric Medicine. Naomi Schmid, DPM, chief medical officer for Lake Region Healthcare (LRH), considers it a great honor to serve northern Minnesota and the entire state.
|
Dr. Naomi Schmid |
In addition to her position as chief medical officer, Dr. Schmid and her husband, Stephen Schmid, DPM offer a full spectrum of podiatry services at LRH. She is also board certified through the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
MI Podiatrist Discusses STJ Pain
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "The subtalar joint (STJ) is not well innervated, meaning there aren’t many nerves. Inflammation here appears to produce a subtle sensation, what often is described as an unstable feeling. This is commonly treated with a steroid and often quite helpful….for symptoms. But if the joint continues to be stressed, the symptoms will usually re-develop. When the joint has been damaged sufficiently, surgery may be necessary to fuse it. But this obviously alters foot function and the mechanics of the lower limb. Prior to such an invasive, joint-destructive procedure, great relief of pain may be obtained with use of some regenerative medicine technique, amnio-injections being particularly effective. This technique involves a simple, nearly painless procedure. The benefits are typically lasting, since the growth factors provided bring stem cells to the area, leading to real healing of the joint."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Many Americans will continue to live their lives with undiagnosed STJ disease, uncertain why their leg can give out or why their “ankles” hurt. Most health providers aren’t familiar with this vital articulation and its complex mechanics. Chronic use of anti-inflammatories, reduced activity levels, or unnecessary surgical procedures are all common methods of dealing with this condition. A visit to a specialist may be required to accurately diagnose it. As has been often repeated, don’t live with foot pain. The big picture consequences aren’t good and include impaired circulation, reduced heart health, and diminished quality of life. All are things to be avoided," says Dr. McLean.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
UK Podiatrist Discusses Warning Signs of Diabetes
Emma McConnachie, spokesperson for the Royal College of Podiatry, says, "If you experience a change in sensation in how your feet feel, slower healing of cuts or recurrent skin infections, this could be an early warning sign for diabetes. Type 2 diabetes in particular can be present for years before signs are detected in the feet and can do a lot of damage in that time."
|
Emma McConnachie |
“Also, look out for increases in thirst, the need to urinate, tiredness and hunger, and a dry mouth, which are also warning signs. “Routine diabetic foot screening halved in 2021."

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
VT Podiatrist Joins NMC
Kristin Kindred, DPM joined the Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) orthopedic team in 2022. Dr. Kindred, a podiatrist specializing in foot and ankle surgery, is an avid runner and enjoys connecting with the local running community. In the summer of 2020, Kindred met local runner Shari Bashaw at a marathon. The two struck up a conversation, and Kindred expressed her desire to move to Vermont.
|
Dr. Kristin Kindred |
Bashaw connected Dr. Kindred with David Groening, DPM and Jessica Frost, the physician recruiter at NMC. Kindred, who has family in the New England area, had been looking for a job in the region. "Dr. Greoning was looking to cut back," said Kindred. "It was clear there was a need for another podiatrist, especially with the hindfoot and ankle training. And that's how I got my foot in the door with NMC."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Addressing Physician Burnout
Here are some actions for practices to curb physician and medical staff burnout.
6. Develop mental health support services tailored to the needs of employees.
Practices should incorporate a proactive, evidence-based approach to suicide prevention, including identification and response in the workplace.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Paul Galluzzo, DPM, Henry Stark, DPM
We use Gill Podiatry.
Paul Galluzzo, DPM, Rockford, IL
I have been getting lidocaine at TRxRADE. I think this is a wholesaler (direct to doctor or pharmacy) company with no "middle-man". They require your DEA and state license registration, but once that's verified, it's as easy as ordering from any of our traditional sources. They also have bupivicaine as well as many other injectable, oral, and topical medications.
Henry Stark, DPM, Lake Park Podiatry, FL

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Service Fee for Credit Cards
Everywhere I go, I am being hit with a 3% surcharge on my credit card transactions. Are we legally allowed to do the same?
Michael Cherella, DPM, Medford, NJ
Editor's Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. This is a state regulated issue. If your state allows it, you need to inform the patient beforehand of this charge. It's important to note that you can't add the fees in states whose laws ban them, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas. In addition, Mastercard and Visa allow this practice, while American Express does not. Therefore, you should contact an attorney prior to instituting this practice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC HISTORY) |
RE: Dr. Zacharie
From: Bruce Lebowitz, DPM
During my studies at NYCPM in the 1970s, I remember hearing about a foot doctor who took care of President Lincoln’s feet. I didn’t know the rest of the story until I recently acquired and read We Called him Rabbi Abraham by Gary Zola. Chapter two tells the story of the enigmatic relationship between Lincoln and Issachar Zacharie.
Dr. Zacharie, a highly successful chiropodist, treated generals, members of Lincoln’s cabinet, and then the President. The two became very close. Eventually, during the war, Lincoln sent Zacharie into the South, hoping he could learn of Confederate battle plans and troop movements. Zacharie actually met with a group of Jefferson Davis’s Cabinet. Apparently, he hit it off with the Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin. Judah was known as the brains of the Confederacy. Together, they tried to work out a compromise that they hoped could end the war. Nothing came of the efforts though. The book is fascinating and I’d recommend it to any podiatrist with an interest in history.
Bruce Lebowitz, DPM (retired), Baltimore, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1A |
From: Howard Bonenberger, DPM
I suspect that I speak for more than a few with on the following debate regarding our name/degree stems, at its heart, from an inferiority complex among some but not all. That has not changed since I attended PCPM in the early ‘80s. Please note the last two letters of PCPM stand for podiatric medicine.
For those out there that want to claim they attended medical school, then please state the truth: you attended a podiatric medical school. If you had attended a (plain old) medical school, you'd have the MD or DO degree, but you didn't and you don't. Sorry if that sounds harsh or someone's feelings are hurt. It is not to pass judgment but to state it as it is.
Howard Bonenberger, DPM (Retired), Hollis. NH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1B |
From: Dale Feinberg, DPM
A recent posting by Lawrence Oloff caught my attention when he stated, “I would not claim to be smarter than anyone else in our profession and anyone else could have done the same.” Thanks Larry of the vindication of my career.
I came from a generation when only 50% of the 600 graduates in 1981 got a one-year residency. I failed to place in one of these coveted spots even though I graduated in the top 10% of my class. By the time that our fourth year rotations began, all spots were already allocated. Like a baby bird, I was kicked out of the nest and on my own. My first surgery, an arthroplasty 5th digit left, was performed in private practice. The extent of my CCPM surgical experience was throwing one simple interrupted stitch during a surgical...
