PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
Wound Care Has Changed Significantly During COVID-19: CA Podiatrist

According to Lee C. Rogers, DPM, "Wound care has changed significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first wave has given us a taste of what to expect this coming winter. It is wise for all of use to refine our standard operating procedures so that we may be ready for a stronger wave of infections with a larger impact on the healthcare system.

Dr. Lee Rogers

"It is also worth noting that the post-pandemic model of wound care may look nothing like the pre-pandemic model and we should be prepared to adopt new systems of care that have worked well during the pandemic. The post-pandemic model may become untethered from the site-specific location of the wound center and instead be a more effective case management model navigating wound patients through the whole system," says Dr. Rogers.

IN THE COURTS
NY Podiatrist Accuses St. Joseph’s Medical Practice of Failure to Pay for Services

A podiatrist claims that St. Joseph’s Medical Practice in Yonkers has refused to pay for his services for more than a year. Daniel P. White, DPM sued the medical practice June 3 in U.S. District Court in White Plains demanding $95,512 for 2019 and an undetermined amount for this year, or at the very least, the minimum wage for his hours of service.

White “has not been paid anything for services performed in 2019 and 2020,” the lawsuit states, and he “remains suspended without pay and without the opportunity to treat patients and perform work for … St. Joseph’s.” St. Joseph’s did not respond to email and voicemail requests for its side of the story.

TELEHEALTH NEWS
Patients Are Using Telehealth for Convenience, Not as a Necessity

Telehealth use began to skyrocket back in March as patients saw virtual care as a necessity amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients are continuing to see doctors over video visits but for different reasons now: It's more convenient and faster than going to see the doctor in person. This trend shows that telehealth is not just a blip on the radar and points to the future of healthcare, said Wyatt Decker, M.D., CEO of OptumHealth, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, during a company briefing on the future of telehealth.

According to data from UnitedHealth Group and consumer research company CivicScience, 29% of consumers said they used telehealth in May up from 8% in December. The percentage of consumers who don't plan to use telehealth dropped from 72% in December to 47% in May, according to a consumer poll. While COVID-19 visits accounted for nearly 1 in 5 virtual visits in March, that dropped to only 4% of visits in May.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Five Things COVID is Teaching Us About The Patient Experience - Part 4

In the school of hard knocks, the coronavirus is the new headmaster. COVID-19 administered a nearly impossible financial test to physician practices, forcing them to quickly rethink the way they deliver care. With the arduous adjustments behind us, we can begin to make sense of its lessons. Here are five things COVID-19 is teaching us about the patient experience that will extend long past this pandemic:

4. Keep it short. As restrictions lift, practices likely will offer both traditional and virtual appointments. Digital check-in tools, with their ability to capture upstream data, can eliminate the frustration of waiting rooms with their long wait times, tight appointment windows, and “Petri dish” environments. Eliminating wait times improves patient satisfaction and trust, with the added benefit of increasing practice productivity.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Stanford Rosen, DPM

I am extremely saddened to have just learned of the passing of Dr. Stanford (Stan) Rosen of Tuscaloosa, AL. I met Stan 40 years ago when I attended my first meeting of the Academy of Ambulatory Foot & Ankle Surgery (now The Academy of Minimally Invasive Foot & Ankle Surgery). The kindness, friendliness, and help that he provided to me is something that I will never forget. In addition to serving as President of the Academy, Stan served as Executive Director of the Academy for many years, assisted by his lovely wife, Joanie and his daughter, Priscilla.

Dr. Stanford Rosen

The great thing about Stan’s meetings was that not only did you learn a lot of things that would help your patients and your practice, and not only were you a part of a truly caring and friendly organization, but the activities and banquets were second to none. Stan was like a second father to me and I loved him dearly. Deepest condolences to the Rosen family. May he rest in peace.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH)
RE: Diabetic Foot Ulceration: No Risk Change for Most Low-risk Patients After 2 Years
From: Leonard Levy, DPM, MPH

According to a new UK observational study of 10,421 outpatients with diabetes published in the journal Diabetic Medicine, around 5 per cent of individuals at low risk of diabetic foot ulceration had a change in their clinical risk status, with <1% experiencing foot ulceration or amputation after 2 years. 5.1% were classified as low risk at their first visit, progressing to moderate risk. The cumulative incidence of ulceration, amputation, and mortality among the low-risk individuals was 0.4%, 0.1%, and 3.4%, respectively.

Age was significantly associated with an increased risk of ulceration, amputation, and mortality. Male sex had a significant association with increased mortality risk. These findings could possibly influence the current UK guidelines on the frequency of foot screening. (Heggie R, et al. Diabet. Med.2020 Jun 08 [Epub ahead of print].

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC)
From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM

Over the years, I have heard many adages from my patients. But the conventional wisdom I have heard repetitively from my patients who owned boats, and also those who owned professional sports teams, remains uniquely the same: "The two best days of my life was the day I bought,  and then the day I sold..."
