PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
PA Podiatrist Discusses How to Find Breathable Shoes

James McGuire, DPM, the director of the Leonard Abrams Center for Advanced Wound Healing at the Temple School of Podiatric Medicine, tells SELF that people should look for pairs made from certain materials—like tricot (a knit that can be either natural or synthetic), bamboo fibers, cork, or leather.

Dr. James McGuire

Still, shoes can be made with “good” materials and be crafted in a less-than-perforated way (say, the stitching is extra-tight), Dr. McGuire notes. Here’s a tip from him on how to tell if yours are *literally* breathable: Hold your shoe up to your mouth and blow through it—if you can feel your breath on the other side of the fabric, it’s well-ventilated and should help keep your feet feeling fresh.

PODIATRIST AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Biomechanics are Critical to Preventing Sports Injuries: IL Podiatrist

According to Robert Weil, DPM, "Biomechanics are critical. Athletes must be aware of their foot-ankle alignment to prevent injuries and enhance performance. Different sports have distinct lower extremity demands; issues like excessive foot pronation or supination can lead to overuse problems. Evaluation by a sports podiatrist is wise, especially if there’s a history of problems like plantar fasciitis, ankle issues, shin splints, or knee problems. Custom orthotics often play a significant role in providing the necessary support and alignment."

Dr. Robert Weil

"Athletes should prioritize proper foot care, invest in supportive and properly fitting footwear tailored to their sport, and routinely strengthen their feet and ankles while focusing on balance and stability. This is key for athletes of all ages and levels. Proper technique is always crucial. Good luck to all athletes out there. And remember, foot health, shoes, balance, and strengthening are key!"

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Give Your Toenails a Break from Polish: UK Podiatrist

Nail polish on fingernails seems to last all of five minutes. On toenails? That stuff could survive anything. But just because it sticks around forever doesn't mean you don't need to remove it every once in a while. According to podiatrist Dina Gohil, it's important to give your toenails a break, otherwise they could end up looking marked and discolored.

Dina Gohill

"If you're a serial nail-painter, give yourself a break in between," says Gohil. "Even a couple of hours will do, to give them a chance to replenish themselves. But if you can do a week, that's fantastic." After taking off your polish (Gohil isn't too fussed about opting for something acetone-free, unless that's your preference), she recommends soaking your feet in a bowl of warm salt water for a few minutes. Once they're dry, you can apply a fresh coat of polish.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Tips for Texting Patients

3B. Do not use your personal phone number. Providing your cell phone or personal phone number to patients might seem convenient. It may seem like a great way to provide first rate service to your patients. But, giving patients your personal mobile number is generally a bad idea.

Second, texting from your personal phone number also blurs boundaries with your patients. Most patients will respect your personal time; however, there are those who may not acknowledge boundaries easily. They may send frequent urgent messages and text you during “off” hours. They may send information that increases your liability.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1A
From: Paul Slowik, DPM, Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

Kudos to doctors Rogers and Jacobs for once again being the voice of reason. It’s podiatrists’ pettiness that disempowers us.

Paul Slowik, DPM, Oceanside, CA

I agree with Dr. Jacobs and his views he shared with us in the June 13th PM News. It was quite serendipitous that I came to The Ohio State University College of Medicine. On May 19, 1995,  one of the podiatry students who is now a faculty member at the University of Alabama, Birmingham called and asked me if I had seen the advertisement for the faculty position at Ohio State. To be honest, I hadn’t, but upon inspection it looked intriguing. I had a friend who was a pediatric spine surgeon, Tom Kling, MD at the University of Indiana, and I called to ask him if he knew the chair of orthopedics at Ohio State. He said he knew him quite well.

He said he would call him right then for me but warned me that Shelly Simon, MD was a well-respected foot and ankle surgeon in the orthopedic community and warned me that it was, “Shelly’s way or the highway,” but I would be fine. Not more than 30 minutes later, Shelly called me and asked if I could come the following Wednesday to be interviewed on...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1B
From:  Allen Jacobs, DPM

Personally, I would approach things somewhat differently, Dr. Purdy. I think we should have one board and one board only. We should be in podiatric medicine and surgery. If a person has a particular interest in some area, for example, wound care, limb, salvage, sports medicine or whatever, then if you really feel, compelled to do so offer a "certificate of added qualification”.

I personally do not feel this is needed or would benefit any individual practitioner in the long-term, I think this is a far better solution than continuing with a ridiculous number of board certifications in podiatry. If I treat an athlete with a Jones fracture, my treatment is going to be identical for that patient whether I am “board-certified in sports medicine” or ...
