FL Podiatrist Uses Topaz Probe to Treat Chronic Heel Spurs
For years Joyce Caldwell lived with severe pain in her feet. Doctors diagnosed Caldwell with plantar fasciitis, also called heel spurs. "The arch flattens as we get older and, unfortunately, the tendon that supports the arch can't stretch anymore, so it starts pulling the heel bone," said Dr. Tatiana Wellens, a surgical podiatrist.
|
Dr. Tatiana Wellens |
Caldwell tried cortisone shots, but they didn't work. Surgery seemed like her only option, but after already going under the knife for other operations, she didn't want to go that route. Caldwell was at the end of her rope when she learned about the Topaz probe, a minimally invasive procedure to treat heel spurs. "It provides a revascularization as well as promotes two new growth factor formations," Wellens said.
Wellens said that most tendon problems are caused by a lack of circulation in the tissue." Instead of cutting open the foot and removing a portion of the tendon, Topaz is done through a one-inch incision. "The low radiofrequency electrode is inserted in the tissue and that promotes the revascularization," Wellens said. Unlike, traditional surgery Topaz keeps the structure and alignment of the arch intact and only takes about 20 minutes.

42 Barry Students Participate in the Rite of Passage Ceremony
“As you are coming into the podiatric profession, you are coming into a profession whose time has come and you have made the right decision for a career choice,” advised Dr. Briant Moyles to the 42 Barry University podiatric medical students participating in the June 2007 Rite of Passage ceremony. “The baby boomers are beginning to retire and need good podiatric physicians, some form of universal healthcare is on the horizon, and many podiatric physicians are retiring, creating many excellent opportunities in the profession,” he added. Dr. Moyles, former president of the Florida Podiatric Medical Association and the Fund for Podiatric Medical Education, served as the keynote speaker and presented his son, Jared Moyles, with his white coat, marking the beginning of his clinical experience.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
NJ Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to Insurance Scam
A Long Branch, NJ podiatrist pleaded guilty Monday to billing an insurance company more than $200,000 for services he never provided, according to the Office of the Attorney General. Martin H. Weinstein, 52, pleaded guilty to second-degree health care claims fraud for billing Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield for more than $200,000 in services.
Weinstein admitted at the plea hearing that between January 1998 and January 1999, he fraudulently billed Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield approximately $285,000 in services, for which he was paid just over $200,000, according to a release from the Division of Criminal Justice in the state Attorney General's Office Authorities said Weinstein did this through electric billing at his office, submitting the claims and then diverting the insurance claim checks to a post office box he rented. He then forged his patient's names on the back of the checks, and then deposited them into his own account.
In April, at the request of the Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor, Weinstein was arrested by the U.S. Marshal's Service in the Dominican Republic. He was transported to Miami, where he waived extradition, and on May 24 was returned to New Jersey. Weinstein is scheduled to appear before a judge on Sept. 28 to be sentenced. Crimes of the second degree can carry sentences of up to 10 years in state prison and a criminal fine of up to $150,000, according to officials at the Division of Criminal Justice. Weinstein may also face civil insurance fraud fines.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: ESWT for Posterior Tibial Tendonitis (Mark Goldberg, DPM) From: David Zuckerman, DPM
I have used ESWT since 1999 for both PT tendinosis and peroneal brevis tendinosis. The tendon area must be localized and discrete with palpation. The energy protocol depends on the machine. We use the Dornier Epos Ultra, which is an excellent ESWT device due to the ability to use outline ultrasound.

RE: Treatment for Intra-epidermal Pustular Dermatitis (John Chisholm, DPM) From: Sharon M. Root, DPM, Yong J. Zhu, DPM
I have found it very helpful with these patients to have the pharmacist compound a mixture of 20% Ketoprofen, and varying amounts of Salicylic Acid (from 20-50% depending on severity) in a Diprolene cream base. This is applied BID to affected areas.
Sharon M. Root, DPM, Succasunna, NJ, drsroot@verizon.net
I am currently a general dermatology fellow in St. Luke's hospital Allentown, PA. I recommend topical high potent steroid, e.g., . Diprolene cream or Ultravate cream q12h. The doctor could also inject most prominent lesion with 1/2 or 1/4 cc of Kenalog 10 q weekly.
