PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Store Bought Orthotics Shouldn't Break the Bank: RI Podiatrist
Jane Meglio of Cranston, RI didn't think she'd be running marathons, but when she spent $2,300 on arch supports, she hoped they'd make her more mobile - not less. “I can't walk!” complains Meglio. “I can't walk - it's terrible.” Meglio said she purchased the arch supports in early March from a company that her sister and brother-in-law had been raving about.
|
Dr. Jonathan Sabourin |
"Just getting orthotics isn't the cure all for everyone,” said Jonathan Sabourin, DPM, a podiatrist at Coastal Foot & Ankle. “A lot of times I feel people are probably given orthotics that don't need them.” Dr. Sabourin told NBC 10 he sees too many people buying pricey orthotics, when all they really need is a new pair of shoes. He said insoles can be helpful, but they shouldn't break the bank.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
Plantar Fasciitis Most Common Complaint of Runners: IL Podiatrist
Whether you’re a novice jogger embarking on a couch-to-5K program or a marathoner serious about racking up finishers’ medals, it’s critical you take great care of your feet. “Running is an amazing form of cardiovascular exercise, but because it’s a high-impact sport that involves repeated trauma to the feet, everyone from long-distance runners to casual joggers is at risk for developing painful and debilitating foot conditions,” says Bryce A. Paschold, DPM, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
|
Dr. Bryce Paschold |
Plantar fasciitis is perhaps the most common complaint from runners. Presenting as heel pain, it’s caused by inflammation of the ligament that holds up the arch. At the first sign of heel pain, Dr. Paschold advises runners to stretch the calf, wear sturdier shoes, and use arch supports. In some cases, icing and anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, are helpful. Should pain continue, visit a foot and ankle surgeon, who might recommend custom orthotics, injections, and physical therapy.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
MI Podiatrist Dispels Myth of Type 2 Diabetics
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "One of the biggest fallacies regarding diabetes is particularly dangerous. This is in reference to the thinking that those with type II diabetes (adult-onset, T2D) needn’t be concerned about these consequences since they are not type I (which require administration of an injectable medication). Nothing could be further from the truth. All the negatives associated with type I diabetes (aka juvenile onset, aka insulin dependent), including infections, the numbness and pain of neuropathy, even amputation, can be, and more often are, experienced by those with type II. This is true regardless of whether or not you control your blood sugar with diet, oral meds, or injectables."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Type II diabetics will benefit from specific and precise education about the performance of daily inspections of the foot. Because of the nerve changes, a diabetic may have some type of injury to the skin but experience no pain. Predictably, practices leading to healthier skin, like regular moisturizer application, will result in fewer skin injuries," says Dr. McLean.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips for Texting Patients
3A. Do not use your personal phone number. - Providing your cell phone or personal phone number to patients might seem convenient. It may seem like a great way to provide first rate service to your patients. But, giving patients your personal mobile number is generally a bad idea.
First, it increases your risk of HIPAA non-compliance. You or your patients might send something that can be considered PHI. If you lose your phone or someone accesses it, you will need to report a HIPAA breach. It is best to send office text messages from a secure application or interface. Messages will only be accessible to authorized users. Often, these applications can encrypt the messages and you will not have to worry about losing your device.

OBITUARIES |
RE: The Passing of Michael A. Izzo, DPM
Mike lived his life with unmatched optimism, compassion, and curiosity. An accomplished podiatrist and surgeon, he prided himself on taking seemingly hopeless cases, helping patients whom nobody else could. Patients often would tell Mike's children, "it's because of your dad that I still have my leg!"
|
Dr. Michael Izzo |
Over the course of his career, he simultaneously built and ran successful practices in Williamsville, Gowanda, and Medina, New York, all while caring for patients in a dozen nursing homes across the region. One of the few modern doctors who still made house calls, he was an old-school physician who took time to listen to and carefully examine each patient.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Peter Crickellas, DPM
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Dr. Peter Crickellas. Pete and I were lab and clinic partners while at NYCPM and had remained best of friends since.
|
Dr. Peter Crickellas |
Peter was a well decorated Vietnam veteran who received the Bronze Star, The Silver Star, Legion of Merit for gallantry in action, and a Purple Heart. Peter left podiatry after practicing for several years to pursue his second love, teaching biology. I will miss you brother. Rest in Peace.
Tom Pusterla, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1 A |
From: Jon Purdy, DPM
I don’t understand why this has to be such a convoluted issue. You have ONE board with multiple certification types. And as much as I’m tired of repeating myself, it bears repeating. We ALREADY have that type of board, called the “American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry.”
Currently, we have a surgical board that splits the foot, so we have to say we are “board certified” then denote for which structures of the foot. This, along with multiple other boards, is just confusing to the public, insurances, the medical system, and it further marginalizes us.
Why not present our profession with one board, then within that board, get certified in whatever the heck you want? Be it podiatric medicine, surgery, wound care, limb salvage, or all of the above, we are represented by one certification body.
Jon Purdy, DPM, New Iberia, LA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1B |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
I had an interesting conversation with our chief of orthopedics. We were discussing the two board issue in podiatry. Non-podiatrists find this to be confusing and find this sets us apart from the remainder of medicine. He feels this leads to a lack of credibility for our profession. He looks at orthopedic surgery as an example. Regardless of the residency completed, there is one orthopedic surgery board. If you are an orthopedic surgeon, certified or not, you cannot apply to our hospital for spine privileges unless you demonstrate adequate experience in spine surgery. We can go on from there.
You have orthopedic surgeons who complete fellowships and concentrate, for example, in upper extremity surgery, sports medicine, pediatrics, oncology, and so forth. The point is, however, that regardless of how narrow, the scope of practice an orthopedic surgeon elects to practice, the orthopedic surgeon still must satisfy the requirements for one board. There are not separate boards for feet, shoulders, knees, hips, infectious disease, and...
