PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
CA Podiatrist Warns Against Ignoring Lumps or Bumps on the Foot
Have a lump or bump on your foot? Whether it’s painful or not, it could potentially signal a serious condition. “Whether your bump or lump is pea-sized or golf ball-sized, it should not go ignored. A proper diagnosis is key to proper treatment,” says Michael Coyer, DPM, board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
|
Dr. Michael Coyer |
Sometimes, Dr. Coyer notes, a bump is suspected of being cancerous. In this case, your foot and ankle surgeon will perform a biopsy and if it is indeed cancer, will perform surgery to remove the mass, working in tandem with an oncologist for cancer treatment.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
Time and Rest Needed for Runner's Overuse Injuries: OH Podiatrist
Gordon Yun, DPM, an OrthoCincy podiatrist, says [overuse injuries] tend to show up around the start of summer. "The three most common things I’ll probably see this time of year are plantar fasciitis, something called capsulitis which is more forefoot pain, and Achilles tendonitis,” said Dr. Yun.
|
Dr. Gordon Yun |
He says all of those overuse injuries tend to happen when a person starts walking or running and does too much too soon. “People just get out there and overdo it, more or less,” Dr. Yun said. So, how do you fix these problems? “The plain, awful truth is time and rest, which is the most impossible treatment plan,” he said.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
TX Podiatrist Provides Shoe-Buying Tips for People with Back Pain
“Back pain can occur for a variety of reasons,” says Anne Sharkey, DPM, a podiatrist based in Austin, Texas. “In my patient population, frequently those with flat feet experience pain in their low backs. In this case, getting my patients into a more supportive shoe and maybe even orthotics can result in improvements in their back pain.”
|
Dr. Anne Sharkey |
When recommending shoes, Dr. Sharkey looks for ones that provide ample support, stability, and comfort. Also, she explains that a shoe should have flexibility at the toe box to allow for fluid forward movements and stability throughout the mid-foot to support the arch. Support should also be found around the heel in order to stabilize the foot.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Critical Steps for Successful Digital Vendor Selection
Selecting a digital vendor is a complex task in any industry, but it’s especially challenging in healthcare. By following a series of comprehensive and repeatable steps, you can ensure your next digital solution selection process not only succeeds but delivers the results your practice needs.
5. Short list vendors - With your list of requirements and critical functionality in hand, it’s time to begin shortlisting vendors. You can start by eliminating vendors and solutions that don’t meet critical requirements like available technology integrations and key features, then prioritize based on a history of similar implementations and successful reported outcomes at other health systems.
Many marketplaces offer user reviews or testimonials that can help you narrow your search: just be sure that you’re getting unbiased information and capturing feedback from health systems with similar requirements and populations as your own. Feedback and reviews aren’t helpful if they reflect a totally unrelated use case or implementation.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Reimbursement For Interpreter Services
We have a handful of patients, mostly routine foot care, that require sign language or foreign language interpreter services. We use a local company to provide the interpreters, and they charge around $75-$100/hr with a 1.5 to 2 hour minimum. We lose money on these patients every visit, and maybe barely break even if there is a separate problem that allows for an office visit. It was suggested that T1013 could be a billing code we could use to try to get insurance to cover/reimburse this expense.
My research in the past would suggest that is not the case. I’m curious what the current state of affairs is regarding this issue. The insurances involved are typically Medicare, Medicare Advantage with some Medicaid (primary and secondary). Iowa Medicaid did publish a letter in 2009 stating that T1013 could be billed and reimbursed but we’ve not tried to do that.
Michael Orosz, DPM, Cedar Rapids, IA
Response: Unfortunately, as you probably know, federal law requires that doctors provide interpretation/translation services to patients. This is pursuant to the Americans With Disabilities Act and other federal laws. This service must be provided without cost to the patient.
I have never personally heard of any billing code for this, nor have I heard of any payer that reimburses for this. One wonders whether billing for the service violates the concept of providing the service without cost to the patient. Sadly, this is an example of another unfounded mandate from the government.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
The biggest existential threat to podiatry? For the last 50 years, we ourselves have been the biggest threat to the profession. I remember being in school in the early 1970s hearing the statement, "Podiatry eats its young."
It seems like there is always an intra-podiatry conflict of some kind. More often than not, the strife revolves around surgery, board certification, and extent of privileges. We, of vintage age, remember the intra-podiatry lawsuit; one group of podiatrists suing another group of podiatrists. Then there was the formation of PPOs, and podiatrists were literally paid per capita to essentially do nothing for patients. To become a member of the PPO a podiatrist paid $10,000 to someone and then...
