OPEIU to Offer Healthcare Plan to Guild Members
Drs. Phil Morreale (IA), Ed Smith (VT), John Mattiacci (PA), and Joseph Pasquino (PA) met with Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) President Richard Lanigan at the 28th OPEIU Convention in Las Vegas. Dr. Mattiacci and Mr. Lanigan announced the implementation of a new OPEIU health plan which will be available to Guild members and their families this month. The fully insured plan offers three plan designs and pharmacy benefits. Vision, dental, and audiology benefits can be added by the individual member.
|
|
Dr. John Mattiacci |
Dr. Mattiacci stated that this benefit has been in development for well over a year and "all of the parties came together this week in order to make this announcement at the Convention. Over the past three years, the cost of healthcare has been a huge challenge to our members. The OPEIU plan is fully insured and should relieve the cost pressure on our members."

OHFAMA Presents Service Award Recognition to 2 OH Podiatrists
The Ohio Foot and Ankle Medical Association (OHFAMA) recently presented two podiatrists with Service Awards. Ronald Kaplansky, DPM, a graduate of OCPM served as president of the Ohio Podiatric Medical Association in 1988. Dr. Kaplansky served as the State Medical Board of Ohio’s Podiatry Examiners from 1976–1979. He later served the State Medical Board as the podiatric member, supervising member (92-93), and president (90-91) of the Medical Board from 1988-1998.
|
|
(L-R) Drs. Ronald Kaplansky and David Zink |
David Zink, DPM, a graduate of OCPM, has practiced in the Cincinnati area since 1983. He joined the practice of Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care in 1998. Dr. Zink served as Southern Academy Treasurer for 4 years, and served 5 years on the Board of Trustees of OHFAMA. Notably, Dr. Zink fought to gain surgical privileges for podiatrists at local hospitals in Cincinnati. Upon winning that battle, he sat on the Credentials Board at Bethesda North Hospital.

Foot Pain is Body's Early-Warning System: MA Podiatrist
“Sometimes foot pain causes knee, hip, or back issues, and by the same token, if someone has pain in their knees or back, it puts the foot in an awkward position, resulting in foot pain,” said Christopher Peteros, DPM, a podiatrist with New England Foot Specialists in Longmeadow, who stressed the importance of paying attention to pain, calling it our body’s early-warning system. “If you feel pain in your foot, knee, or ankle, it’s telling you to stop what you’re doing,” he told BusinessWest. “It’s like the ‘check engine’ light in your car.”
|
|
Dr. Christopher Peteros |
When we walk or run, the foot’s natural movement is known as pronation (the inward roll of the foot) and supination (the outward roll of the foot), both of which move us forward while providing support, cushioning, and balance. Too much or too little of either pronation or supination can cause pain in the feet and other parts of the body.

FL Podiatrist Discusses Best Shoes for Bunions
According to a board-certified podiatrist, Suzanne Fuchs, DPM of LuxePodiatry in Florida, "The best shoes for bunions are those that have a wider toe box. A shoe that is too narrow will put increased pressure on the big toe joint causing rubbing and friction on the bunion."
|
|
Dr. Suzanne Fuchs |
Dr. Fuchs elaborates, "I recommend wearing softer fabrics with more give. Quilted stretch fabrics and soft leather are always a great choice. A shoe stretcher can come in handy and works on 100 percent genuine leather."

10 Ways to Strengthen Your Strategic Plan - Part 6
A strategic plan is not just a document written by physicians and managers and then filed away for safekeeping. It is a vision for the practice, owned by the practice. For a medical practice to succeed, everyone must engage with and live and breathe the plan. Here are 10 questions to assess your strategic plan.
6. Does your strategy embrace uncertainty? Prioritize all your current threats, or things that could derail your strategy, as part of your annual SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). Consider what action you would take if these worst-case scenarios came to fruition. Could you handle it? Do you have a contingency plan ready to implement?

Query: Lapidus with McBride-Silver Bunionectomy
When I perform a first metatarso-cuneiform arthrodesis along with a Silver bunionectomy/McBride bunionectomy – I make two separate incisions. Any suggestions on coding? Also, what is the difference between CPT 28297 and CPT 28740?
Jeffrey Klein, DPM, Warren, MI
Response: CPT 28297-Correction, hallux valgus (bunionectomy), with sesamoidectomy, when performed; with first metatarsal and medial cuneiform joint arthordesis, any method
CPT 28740-Arthrodesis, midtarsal or tarsometatarsal, single joint
Clearly, there is a difference!
CPT 28740 is a single joint arthrodesis procedure only of the tarsometatarsal joint.
CPT 28297 includes the arthrodesis of the tarsometatarsal joint and the bunionectomy which in your case based on the post is the Silver or McBride variety.
The fact that you made two separate incisions does not matter in this scenario based on its the descriptor of the surgery that you are performing. Now, if you did a midtarsal arthrodesis, the two separate incisions would matter as now the procedures are no longer linked in any way.

RE: Post-Surgical Diabetic Foot Ulcer Results in a Four Fold Increase in Kidney Transplant Failure
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
Patients presenting with a diabetic foot ulcer after kidney transplantation are four times more likely to experience transplant failure in adults with diabetic kidney disease and diabetic neuropathy, reported endocrinologist Janaka Karalliedde, PhD, MBBS, of the Guy's and St. Thomas' Foundation Trust to Endocrine Today. It was warned that in post-kidney transplant patients there should include a focus on foot surveillance so that early warnings can be observed and promptly treated.

I too am retired in SW Florida. I think your concept is much needed. Although I have no advice to give you, I would appreciate any information you gather that could help me to consider a similar operation in my area.

From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
Dr. Horowitz’s statement that people fall ONLY as the result of foot or gait abnormalities is not correct, and exemplifies the very problem of fall risk assessment. The etiology of falls in senior citizens includes an eclectic variety of factors, such as medication effects, inner ear pathology, neurological disorders, visual difficulties, environmental hazards, footwear. Complete fall risk evaluation must include assessment of all such factors, not just podiatry-related pathology.
