AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM IPC Visits Dominican Republic

The International Podiatry Club (IPC) medical mission team from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) visited the Dominican Republic (DR). The trip was a success, and the students helped with triage, and rotated through podiatry, general medicine, ophthalmology, pediatrics, and acupuncture/massage therapy. They served a total of 916 patients. Each year the IPC volunteers at an international site to provide needed medical services for an international community in need of healthcare services.

DPM, Student volunteers were Srishti Ramtirthkar, Shailee Vishnubhatt, Jyoti Borate, Jessie Laffey, Dimpi Patel, Alex Fiola, Aaliyah Bhura, and Harneet Jaswal. These students were exceptional; they worked tirelessly to help provide medical care to the people in several underserved communities in the DR. INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Podiatrist Rebuilds After Tragic Fire

Ricky Lee won’t soon forget the day he woke to the news that the beautiful new Kingston branch of his podiatry practice The Walking Clinic had burned to the ground. The clinic that rose from the ashes, however, more than makes up for it.

Ricky Lee

Though the clinic has evolved in this new location, some things will never change. The podiatry services are still offered in combination with physiotherapy through the Canberra Physio Clinic. Ricky says there are major benefits to a multi-disciplinary approach. “We prefer a holistic approach. We find when your physiotherapist, podiatrist, and exercise physiologist are working in connection, they can provide better and faster care and that means better outcomes.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE dAY
Tips for Texting Patients

2. Do not include PHI in text messages. Text messaging is not inherently secure. Do not include PHI or other sensitive information in them. Text messages are not, by default, encrypted. They are often stored in a device’s local memory and by a third-party carrier that you may not have a BAA with. They should be treated similarly to unencrypted emails.

You must divulge a patient’s phone number in order to send a text message, so you should not state anything that relates to the “past, present, or future health status” of the individual.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS)
RE: APMA Policy 2-24. One Board Certification in Podiatry (Lee Rogers,, DPM)
From: Richard M. Maleski. DPM, RPh

While I appreciate the points Dr. Rogers brings up, I still contend that there is a strong possibility that some podiatrists will have difficulty attaining board certification status if the surgical portion of the board remains the same as it is now. I've had the honor and privilege of being on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh residency program since its inception in 2001, and also on the precursor program in Pittsburgh before that. I've helped train over 130 residents and at least twice that number of students over the 30 plus years of my career. I've been a Residency Evaluator for CPME and have evaluated about a dozen programs. Not all of the aspiring podiatrists that have rotated through our program and that I observed in the on-site evaluations over the years have shown the aptitude or the interest in pursuing surgery.

Granted, this number is very low, but it exists, nonetheless. And why is this pertinent to podiatry versus medicine? In medicine, medical students have 4 years of medical school to determine if they are going to gravitate to a medical specialty or...
