MI Podiatrist Provides Summer Footcare Tips

Keep your feet healthy with these summer foot-care tips from Dr. Cary Wolf, an Oakland County Michigan podiatrist. Enjoy your summer season!

Dr. Cary Wolf

*Change shoes and socks often especially after exercising to air out your feet and keep them dry. *Apply a lotion to your feet, particularly on the bottom where dry scaly skin may appear. *Check your feet often. If you find red, itchy, cracked, dry skin between the toes, it is most often athlete's foot. Use an anti-fungal cream twice a day for a week, then once a day until the condition improves. See your local podiatrist for any other problem and if a condition worsens, and be treated painlessly!

AT THE COLLEGES

Podiatry Students Raise More Than $4,000 for Yucatan Crippled Children’s Project

Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine hosted the second annual “Heal the Stride” 5K Run/Walk and variety show last month, which raised more than $4,000 for the Yucatan Crippled Children’s Project. The charity is an ongoing humanitarian effort founded by Dr. Charles Southerland, which provides indigent crippled children from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with medical care.

Heal the Stride 5K Run/Walk

Students Alexis Kreplick, Elizabeth Sanders, and Augusta Dunse, with the help of their peers, organized the event, which saw more than 80 participants who made the stride around Barry’s campus escorted by the Village of Miami Shores police officers. A student variety show concluded the race, which included performances ranging from a martial arts demonstration to cultural dance performances and musical instrumental solos and duets.

PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE

Medical Boards Get More Tools to Investigate Physicians

Political pressure and more attention to the growing problem of prescription drug abuse have contributed to increased scrutiny of medical boards in recent years. That has led some states to pass legislation or make policy changes to bolster how the boards regulate and discipline physicians.

As a result, medical boards across the country are taking more disciplinary actions against doctors. The number of board actions against physicians increased 6.8%, from 5,652 in 2010 to 6,034 in 2011, according to an annual summary of board actions compiled by the FSMB.

E-HEALTH NEWS

Doctors Quick to Adopt Tablets into Practice

Physician adoption of tablet computers has grown rapidly, according to Manhattan Research’s “Taking the Pulse U.S. 2012” survey of 3,015 physicians in 25 specialties. The survey, conducted in the first three months of 2012, found that 62% of physicians owned a tablet computer, up from 27% in 2011, the first full year after the introduction of the iPad set off the newest wave of tablets. Of the 62% who own tablets, half use them at the point of care. By comparison, most surveys put electronic health record use by physicians at around 50%, and that has required federal incentive programs to help get adoption to that mark.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Connect Compliments by Customizing Them

Add extra punch when you deliver a compliment. Instead of commenting only on what the person did, connect it to the person’s values or source of greatest pride. Example: A successful deal-maker told one entrepreneur: “Starting things is in your DNA.”

QUERIES (MEDICAL/LEGAL)

Query: Restrictive Covenant

I am an associate in a practice and am looking to go out on my own. According to my employment contract, I can't open a practice within three miles for three years. Is this enforceable?

Name Withheld

Editor's response: PM News does not provide legal advice. The enforcibility of a restrictive covenant is dependant on how reasonable it is. Local courts vary on this, so it's best to consult with a local healthcare attorney. Generally, a three mile limit will be enforced in a suburban or rural area, but not in an urban setting.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1

RE: DEA Certificate Cost (Joseph Borreggine, DPM)
From: John Gilfert, DPM

That is called government; plain and simple. And, it is worse than that. It is only 24 years and not 34. The fee is another form of taxation to fuel the government machines.  It feeds endless beauracracy and pays for additional unnecessary government jobs to harass the small business physician taxpayer. When my father started general family practice in 1963, the DEA fee was $5.00. There was minimal insurance intervention in medicine back then. He started out charging $2.00 for an office visit. Nearly everything was cash payment on the spot. He required minimal assistance in the office and earned a good living. We need to return to those days. K.I.S.S.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A

RE: "Unified" Post-Graduate Training (Charles M Lombardi, DPM)
From: Robert D Phillips, DPM

I’m a little confused by Dr. Lombardi’s letter. After 33 years in the profession, 20 of which have been spent in teaching undergraduate and graduate podiatry students, I support fully the “one training” paradigm for all podiatric physicians.

From my early days as a representative in the APMA House of Delegates, I voted always against the subdivision of our profession into smaller, more focused residency training programs. The alphabet soup of post-graduate training programs did nothing but confuse the public and other professions as we could not ever really define what a hospital should look for in podiatric applicants.

Just because a podiatrist is trained in all aspects of podiatric surgery and medicine does not mean that the physician has to practice everything they...

RE: "Unified" Post-Graduate Training (Bryan Markinson, DPM)
From: Charles M Lombardi, DPM

I must correct Dr. Markinson's historical take on the profession and the ABPS's role. In the early 1990s, ABPS did go to hospitals and promote their credential. This was a time when hospitals did not allow podiatrists to become members of the active medical staff. They never said they were the only credential, just that they were a credential in podiatry.

This was shown when the ABPS finally won a lawsuit that was brought by a competing board. The other boards can and do promote their credential to insurance companies and hospitals as they should. The ABPS never went to any hospital and said "we are the only board" in podiatry!

This is just one part of the story. The other being...

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3

RE: Vision 2015, Vision 20/20 (Ed Davis, DPM)
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

The mandatory 3-year residency is fine in concept, however, to suggest that this will result in uniform educational experiences, particularly in the area of surgical case volume and diversity, is presently not consistent with fact. Not everyone can be, should be, or wishes to be "a surgeon".

It is about time that the APMA take some real leadership in directing the future of the profession. Establish definite guidelines, goals, objectives, expectations, clinical activities for primary care podiatry and for surgery. Define once and for all exactly what a primary care podiatrist is expected to do in practice; then set about residency development to accomplish this over three years. We already have...

RE: Barefoot Running More Efficient (Howard E Friedman, DPM)
From: Doug Richie, DPM

Please Dr. Friedman, can you provide any valid scientific evidence which substantiates your claim that: "When practiced judiciously, minimalist shoewear can help strengthen foot muscles and foot health in some cases."? I am very familiar with attempts to measure changes in muscle function as a result of footwear and foot orthotic intervention. I am not aware of any studies demonstrating how these shoes improve "foot health."

There are no reliable techniques to objectively measure increased strength of the plantar intrinsic muscles of the foot, yet many barefoot and minimalist advocates continue to hang their hat on this unproven claim.
