AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1
NYCPM Commencement Joyfully Celebrates Graduates

NYCPM’s 112th Commencement Ceremony celebrated the Class of 2023 with glittering pomp and joyful recognition of the 71 graduates, two residents, and two honorees. The stage at Alice Tully Hall was filled with trustees, deans, and honored guests who gathered to honor the graduates, the college, and President and CEO Louis L. Levine, who led the school for 32 years before passing away in January at the age of 95. Vice President and Academic Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM paid tribute to Mr. Levine and also directed recognition of the members of Mr. Levine’s family who were in attendance. Speakers paid tribute to the graduates and to the profession. Deputy Board Chairman Rock G. Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH deemed the graduates “the best trained DPMs in the country,” and predicted that “AI will never replace DPMs.”

Dr. Léthicia Paul

Touro University President Alan Kadish, MD, described how one’s social skills are honed at work as well as at one’s leisure, and that work is an essential part of life. Maria A. Branca, DPM, then President of NYSPMA, asked the graduates to keep their patients’ needs a priority. Honoree Cristina Contreras, CEO of New York Health+Hospitals/Metropolitan, quoted Nelson Mandela about the transformative power of education, while keynote speaker and honoree Hon. David A. Paterson, former New York State governor, described the ability of DPMs to help in the fight against diabetes; only when aligned with policymakers, however, can they have real impact against this community epidemic. Speaking at the end of the ceremony, Class of 2023 President Léthicia Paul, DPM quoted a French proverb: “It is better to prevent than to heal.”

IN THE COURTS
NY Podiatrist Prevails Against Employer in Retaliation Case

Plaintiff Sherie Neufville, DPM was employed by a health clinic, defendant Metro Community Health Centers, Inc., as a podiatrist from December 2016 until February 2022. She was fired in February 2022 while taking paid maternity leave under an employer sponsored benefit plan. In her complaint, Ms. Neufville alleges that in the fall of 2021 she formally applied for and was approved paid family leave to give birth and take care of her newborn from late November 2021 to the end of February 2022. The defendant failed to show and a default judgment was issued.

She maintains that her employer discharged her for retaliatory reasons to interfere with her attempt to exercise her rights under her ERISA plan. Accordingly, in this lawsuit Dr. Neufville asserted one cause of action, a violation of Section 510 of ERISA. The court did not award damages in this order. Instead, it ordered Dr. Neufville to file supplemental materials clarifying the amount in damages she was seeking and the basis for the requested award amount.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
CarePICS Digital Tool Made Available for APMA Members

Announced at last week's New Cardiovascular Horizons (NCVH) Annual Conference, a  new digital innovation initiative is now open to all members of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA); it involves use of CarePICS, a software application for wound management and vascular care coordination.

Dr. Eric Lullove

"The CarePICS app has been a game changer for our wound care practice," says  Eric Lullove, DPM of West Boca Center for Wound Care, who also participated in Phase 1 of SL2. "Not only can we achieve precision and efficiency in our wound measurement and documentation, our patients can message with us, they can upload images, even participate in televisits. It is also possible to order wound dressings and cellular tissue products through the app."

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Risk Factors and Associated Factors for Calcaneal Apophysitis

Objectives: The aim of this review was to identify the potential intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors (RFs), associated factors (AFs), and consequences of developing calcaneal apophysitis (CA).

Results: A total of 736 studies were identified and 11 observational studies fully met the inclusion criteria, including 1265 participants with a mean age of 10.72 years. Four studies identified extrinsic factors, 10 identified intrinsic factors, and three identified both. The extrinsic and intrinsic RFs, AFs and consequences of CA include limitation of ankle dorsiflexion, foot alignment, stiffness, and mobility of the midfoot, plantar pressures and ground reaction force, body mass index, age, gender, presence of other osteochondroses, and practice of sport. The risk of bias varied, being either moderate or low.

Conclusions: Regarding the factors and consequences associated with CA (Sever’s disease), ankle dorsiflexion limitation is the most frequent intrinsic factor studied, followed by peak plantar pressures and foot malalignment. However, disagreements between the investigators of the included studies were found; in some cases, there is a lack of unanimity between different studies as to which factors are considered to be RFs, AFs, and consequences.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Critical Steps for Successful Digital Vendor Selection

Selecting a digital vendor is a complex task in any industry, but it’s especially challenging in healthcare. By following a series of comprehensive and repeatable steps, you can ensure your next digital solution selection process not only succeeds but delivers the results your practice needs.

3.  Decide the goals and benefits that you are looking to achieve - Capabilities are critical, but they’re only part of the story when it comes to vendor selection: Individual populations, specific use cases and benefits, and where and how the solution will be deployed all make a big difference on what solution will best meet the needs of your practice.

Many digital solutions focus on one or two specific populations, especially early in their lifecycle. By getting specific about exactly where, how, and for whom the system will be implemented, your vendor search can be narrowed to solutions best suited for the actual conditions in which the solution will be used. And without clearly stated goals and benefits, it’s difficult to say whether you actually achieved what you set out to do – or even to know what metrics to measure if you wanted to find out.
