INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
UK Podiatrist Offers Free Treatments to Mark Foot Health Month

Free podiatry sessions are being offered at a Worcester clinic to mark June being Foot Health Month in the UK. Stephanie Owen, who runs SO Podiatry offered free health foot checks on Thursday. Foot Health Month is an annual awareness campaign run by The College of Podiatry.

Stephanie Owen

Stephanie said, “Our feet are one of the hardest working parts of our body, but can be one of the most neglected. Having healthy feet enables us to keep fit and well. There are some very simple steps that everyone can take to keep their feet healthy, but if they do hurt or you notice anything unusual about them, a registered podiatrist can diagnose the problem and provide the right treatment.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
4 Strategies for Physicians to Make Personal, Professional Gains - Part 2

Throughout your career, you will encounter many recommendations, suggestions, and tips. You will find them in books, in articles, on the Internet, in emails and text messages, and everywhere in between. Here are four “timeless” recommendations you can rely on when it comes to taking action, making progress toward goals, and simply feeling better about your career and your life.

2. Zag while everyone else zigs. Giving heed to professional and health industry norms has its place. However, you do need to break away from the pack every now and then. Just because everyone else is “doing it” doesn’t mean it’s the best way to proceed for your practice and your career. Yes, it might take a little bravado to periodically be a maverick. But what if that’s the approach it takes to move from where you are to where you want to be? To accomplish great things, sometimes you have to be unreasonable, or at least unreasonable to the degree that you break through the humdrum of how things are always done.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Brad Glass, DPM

It is with deep sadness we report the passing of Brad Glass, DPM. Dr. Glass graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine. He was later certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and named Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He was a member and president of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association (TPMA) and served as a board member for both TPMA and the APMA.

Dr. Brad Glass

Dr. Glass was a recipient of a TPMA Distinguished Service Award (1994-95) and a TPMA Merit Award (2006-07). He also served as an investigator and president of the Texas State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners and was a true advocate for both his profession and his peers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Unreasonable Chart Reviews
From: Rich Hofacker, DPM

I am just wondering about all of these insurance company "chart review" requests and what other pods are doing about it. Medicare and Medicaid do not routinely request them. However, it all started years ago with Medicare Advantage Plan insurance companies. The insurance companies were requesting one or two charts at a time. Now we are seeing 50-70 chart requests at a time. The insurance companies never get back to you in regard to what you are doing right or wrong. They just request more and more charts. I am perplexed by all of this, primarily because I just no longer have the time to reply to all of these frivolous requests that have gone from a yearly time frame to a monthly time frame.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

Dr. Feldman, I find your post arrogant, smug, and condescending. I suggest you think about those who came before you. There is no reason board costs are so high. Let the boards charge more for re-certification, instead of extracting the "last ounce of blood" from the young DPMs. You owe your colleagues an apology.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: Jeff Merrill, DPM

Just for clarification, I thought I understood the new VA Provider Equity Act as providing podiatrists with increased pay and an ability for leadership positions; however, it did not "RE-LABEL" podiatrists as "PHYSICIANS" but as "PODIATRIC SURGEONS". Is that correct? Would you be able to clarify?

Jeff Merrill, DPM, Klamath Falls, OR

Response from Dr. Robbins: The bill lists us under the definition of Physicians as below. To be clear, the orthopedic society wanted a distinction made in the paragraph that stated physician and surgeon (MD,DO) Podiatric Surgeon (DPM) and Dentist and Oral Surgeon (DDS, DMD). They are all included under the heading of Physician.

SEC. 502. ROLE OF PODIATRISTS IN DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS.
(a) INCLUSION AS PHYSICIAN.—
(1) IN GENERAL.—Subchapter I of chapter 74 is amended by adding...
