The WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) recently held a commencement ceremony for 40 graduates. CPM graduate Katherine Lucia Gutierrez, DPM ’23, said each graduate has poured their love, tears, sweat, and heartache into becoming doctors. “Today, we celebrate the achievement of a lifetime, a step into the future that awaits us as podiatric and osteopathic physicians, as healers,” she said.

International Federation of Podiatrists Announces New Officers
The Annual General Meeting of the International Federation of Podiatrists (FIP) was held in Lille, France from June 1-3, 2023. Lee C. Rogers, DPM (USA) was elected Treasurer and Yvonne Midolo (Malta) was elected Secretary General. Both were elected to a 2-year term. They join the Board of Directors with President Ivan Farrugia (Malta) and President-elect Daniel A. Weisz (Israel).

FIP was founded in 1947 and has grown to 20 member countries representing over 32,000 podiatrists worldwide and is headquartered in Paris. The next Global Podiatry Summit, FIP’s biennial educational forum, will be hosted in Jerusalem from March 3-6, 2024.

Lowell Weil, Jr, DPM is the current CEO of WFAI and will become Executive Chairman of Balance Health.

Bahamas Podiatrist Opens Family Foot Centre
Monique Mitchell, DPM, MPH recently opened the Family Foot Centre in Nassau, the Bahamas. The official opening to the medical facility, the doctor said, was more than two decades in the making, and began with one step – her stepping out in faith to pursue a dream that seemed impossible at the time.

She left her job as a health educator at the Ministry of Health to return to school to pursue a doctor of podiatric medicine at the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. She completed her residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Miami Beach, FL.

| REMEMBERING HISTORIC PODIATRISTS | |
Isaac E. Willis, Jr., DPM will be honored later this year as one of the first inductees into the Longview Walk of Honor. Honorees will be memorialized with bronze-casted plaques that will be installed in front of Heritage Plaza. The Walk of Honor task force was formed in 2019 after City Council approval. The task force is charged with establishing procedures for the placement of plaques and memorials in downtown to honor those who have made a historical, cultural, or societal impact within the City.

Dr. Willis was a podiatrist and a diplomate for the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and former member of the Texas State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners. He moved to Longview in 1957 where he opened a private practice. He was a leader for the integration of Longview schools in the 1960s. He was among the first recipients of the City's Unity Awards. Dr. Willis died in 2011.

Physician Compensation is Rising but Not Keeping Pace with Inflation, MGMA Survey
Despite physician and advanced practice provider productivity continuing its post-pandemic recovery, compensation gains are being outstripped by the most severe inflationary growth in decades, according to a new report. Provider compensation increased across the board, with primary care physicians (PCPs) receiving the biggest increase last year. Growth in median total compensation for primary care doctors doubled from 2021 to 2022—from pay growth of 2.13% to 4.41%. But these gains were eclipsed by the rate of inflation at 7% and 6.5%, respectively.
Surgical and non-surgical specialists saw their change in median total compensation cool slightly in 2022, dropping from 3.89% for surgical specialists in 2021 to 2.54% in 2022, and from 3.12% for non-surgical physicians in 2021 to 2.36% in 2022, according to the Medical Group Management Association's 2023 provider compensation and production report.
