KSCPM Inducts 2 Members into Hall of Fame Society and Honors 2 Student
Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSCPM) inducted two new members into the College’s Hall of Fame Society: Lawrence A. DiDomenico, DPM, class of 1987 and H. John Visser, DPM, class of 1978. The KSUCPM Hall of Fame recognizes distinguished alumni who display dedication to the College of Podiatric Medicine and contribute to achievements within the podiatric medical community. KSCPM’s dean, Allan M. Boike, DPM, addressed the sponsors of the Glass Slipper Féte in appreciation of their support. The event raised nearly $20,000 for the KSUCPM Student Scholarship Fund. Student Ryon Wiska and graduate Dr. Blayne Patton were recognized as recipients of student awards provided by the OCPM Foundation, a presenting sponsor of the 2015 Glass Slipper Féte.

OH Podiatrist Discusses Blisters
Blisters can form anytime a person is breaking in a new pair shoes. Dr. Heather Petrolla recommends treating small blisters, which are not expanding or filled with fluid, with antibiotic cream and a Band-aid. If you have a blister that is larger than one-half of an inch and it is filled with fluid, she recommends getting it checked out.

Dr. Heather Petrolla |
"Since your foot is down on the ground, you get a lot of really serious organisms when you are doing this. A lot of it is strep faecalis. It is feces, and you will get that in an infection. It can be really difficult to treat," said Dr. Petrolla.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2 |
NY Podiatrist Comments on Transgender Trend
Dr. Suzanne Levine, an accomplished podiatrist on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, has seen a new trend with patients coming into her office. As someone who has been in the foot business for over 30 years, it's hard to catch Dr. Levine off guard. But this trend is indicative of something bigger happening in America today. Levine explains, "Trans women are coming in, more often pre-op than post, asking about how they can feminize their feet."
|
Dr. Suzanne Levine |
In light of Bruce Jenner's recent touchstone interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC, and growing depictions of transgender figures on shows like Orange is the New Black and Transparent, a spotlight is finally being shone on individuals who do not subscribe to "traditional" gender and sexuality norms. At the end of the day, what matters most to Levine is her patient's mental and physical health. We live in an exciting time where transgender issues are seeing necessary attention. If she can help build up someone's confidence, that makes it all worth it.

NZ Podiatrist Discusses Her Profession
As a podiatrist, Carmen Whittaker helps older people in residential care. She also visits those living with a disability or who are unable to visit a clinic. "I work mobile so I'm all over West Auckland. I diagnose and treat skin and nail disorders of the foot. Painful feet are not a natural part of growing old or something to 'put up with'."

"I tend to the needs of people who suffer from nail conditions, painful skin lesions, and other conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Regular podiatry treatments and general foot care can help keep people on their feet for longer. Our treatments adhere to strict aseptic techniques and all instruments are autoclaved and handled in a clean environment," says Whittaker.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
FDA Weighs Approval of First-in-Class Cholesterol Drug
Federal health regulators said Friday that a highly anticipated, experimental drug from Sanofi lowers bad cholesterol more than older drugs. But officials have questions about whether to approve the drug based on that measure alone, or whether to wait for additional study results. The Food and Drug Administration posted its review of Sanofi's Praluent ahead of a meeting next week to consider the drug's approval. Praluent is the first in a new class of cholesterol-lowering biotech drugs to come before the FDA. The drugs are considered the first major advance in lowering bad, or LDL, cholesterol since the introduction of blockbuster statin drugs in the late 1980s.
In multiple company studies, patients taking Praluent, in addition to a statin, saw their cholesterol fall 46 to 60 percent, depending on the dose taken. That was significantly more than the reduction of 20 to 22 percent for patients taking a statin alone. But FDA regulators are weighing whether to approve Praluent based on its cholesterol-lowering benefit, or whether to wait for longer-term studies designed to show whether it actually reduces heart attacks and death in patients. Those data are still several years away.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: What is Happening to Podiatry?
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Below is a typical story that every podiatrist has experienced in their practice. The result of this patient's final treatment with a podiatrist was as one would expect. This is nothing new, but is it really? Here is a true story: A patient presented to my office with previous ingrown nail correction that was performed by a hospital-employed "outpatient" general surgeon three months previous to his visit.
He presented to me complaining of the same problem that he had six months ago. He stated that he was referred by his MD to the general surgeon. His MD is also employed by the same...

RE: The Handwriting on the Wall
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
As I prepare to close down my office in the next few months, I can't help but think back on the past 35 years of practice and look at the pluses and minuses. I supported a family, managed to keep myself fed, saved a few dollars, paid my bills, and helped a few patients along the way. I also created a unique niche practice much dependent on immigrant populations with Medicare/Medicaid insurance, worked at three community health centers and various elderly housing complexes, and generally made a practice that seems suited to no one but me.
With government interference, regulation, and oversight increasing, along with the attendant expenses, I should have seen the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3 |
RE: Computer Security
From: David E. Gurvis, DPM
The IRS has been hacked of 100,000 records. Homeland security has now been hacked with an ongoing attack talking a large number of sensitive government employment records. Even their Einstein program, best in the field, was slow to pick this up. Target was hacked last year of 40,000,000 accounts. Sort of a large number – at least in my opinion.
I, meaning we, all of us doctors, are forced by the government to go to EHR and then forced to pay more for computer security to protect them. The proverbial give with one hand while taking away with the other. To what end? Has patient care improved substantially? No empirical
evidence exists that shows that...
