PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Increased Walking During the Summer Leads to More Foot Injuries: OH Podiatrist

Some of the top injuries that come from busy summertime activities tend to be related to people’s feet. “We see a lot of patients coming in and saying, 'I walked in the wrong shoes at any of those kinds of events – the festivals, Kings Island, cities that require a lot of walking like Chicago, DC, or New York,'" said Matthew Connolly, DPM, OrthoCincy podiatrist.

Dr. Matthew Connolly

Dr. Connolly said protecting the feet should be a priority in the warmer months. He also revealed what the top injury is that can lead to future complications. “We see blisters more than anything. Calluses are more the long-term problem of pressures. Blisters are the short-term response to something that's rubbing and creating pressure,” Dr. Connolly said. He said that as temperatures warm up, blisters are often followed by ankle and toe injuries.

PODIATRIC RESIDENTS IN THE NEWS
PA Podiatrist's Journey to Residency

Since she was a little girl, Courtney Chandler, DPM felt called to work in healthcare. Now as a young woman in her mid 20s, she’s officially here as an incoming resident physician at Temple University Hospital. Her residency will officially begin in July of this year and will continue for three years into July 2027. After this chapter concludes, she will have the opportunity to pursue fellowships to receive additional training and insight into the specifics of podiatry or elect to wrap up her time in residency and begin on her own as a doctor.

Dr. Courtney Chandler

Chandler discovered that podiatric medicine was a great fit for her during the middle of her time at Slippery Rock University. With her own research, advice from a longtime mentor from Lisa Pfingstler, MD, and having shadowed Lara Allman, DPM, she has pursued this path in medicine to the fullest. Chandler spent February 2024 shadowing Dr. Allman for the final time and it was a great experience to end her time as a medical student.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
CA Podiatrist Uses Augmented Reality in the OR

Is augmented reality ready to play a bigger role in surgery? A new study led by a physician from Keck Medicine of USC explores the pros and cons of one specific augmented-reality headset: Apple Vision Pro. Apple Vision Pro can enhance the way surgeons visualize complex anatomy. It can, for instance, superimpose images from pre-operative scans, or images of underlying anatomy, onto the patient. It can even superimpose measurement tools that help surgeons during procedures.

Dr. David Armstrong

The study’s lead author, David G. Armstrong, DPM, a podiatric surgeon at Keck Medicine, and his colleagues used Apple Vision Pro during limb-preservation surgery on a 62-year-old male patient. During limb-salvage operations, augmented-reality headsets enable physicians to better visualize and analyze, in real time, blood flow and tissue conditions, as well as identify potential complications. “During this procedure, Apple Vision Pro helped guide our incision placement and debridement of the bone and soft tissue. It enabled us to determine that the patient had enough blood flow in the area to allow it to heal,” Dr. Armstrong explains.

PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC
OH Podiatrist Confronts Fauci on COVID Origins Cover-UP

The House Oversight and Accountability Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic has held a number of hearings focused on the pandemic's origins, many of them around a "lab leak" theory -- the idea that the virus was created in a Chinese lab. Subcommittee Chair Rep. Brad Wenstrup, DPM (R-Ohio), began the hearing with a reminder of the House rules of decorum. He thanked Dr. Fauci, the former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), for his years of service but did not hold back criticism, implying that Fauci took an authoritarian approach to keeping the public in line with the government's policy recommendations.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup

Dr. Wenstrup claimed the former NIAID director "embraced" a "proximal origin letter opens in a new tab or window" published in March 2020 which stated that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was "not a laboratory construct" -- a view Fauci shared publicly from the White House lawn. Wenstrup also raised concerns over behaviors of other NIAID officials. "We have senior officials from your office, in their own writing, discussing breaking federal law, deleting official records, and sharing private government information with grant recipients," Wenstrup said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Issues Physicians Should Consider Prior to Selling Their Practice

Recent legislative and rulemaking activity at both the federal and state levels, along with changes in certain deal dynamics, are sure to impact physician practice transactions going forward. Following is a list of five new issues physician practice owners should consider in advance of a transaction. Many of these items should be addressed in advance of going to market or accepting indications of interest from potential buyers.

5. Are there any assets outside the practice that you want to retain or ensure are sold along with the practice? If you have ownership in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) or other entity, you may be able to retain ownership outside of the practice transaction. Likewise, you may be able to sell all or a portion of your ownership to provide additional proceeds in a transaction.

We are increasingly seeing buyers in a physician practice transaction desire to joint venture assets such as ASCs with physician owners at the local level in order to promote alignment and provide distributions to physician owners. This can be open to negotiation depending on your long-term goals.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS)
From: Richard M. Maleski, DPM, RPh

Once again, I ask the same question that I asked about 6 weeks ago: how are non-surgical podiatrists going to get board-certified in the surgical portion of the exam if they don't do surgery? There is no way any physician who is not experienced in surgery can pass a surgical board. This is true of any medical discipline, not just podiatry. This is the reason that 2 boards were instituted. Many podiatrists simply do not do surgery, for a variety of reasons. What is going to happen to them if they no longer have an opportunity to get certified?
