PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
Methods Known For Healthier Bone: MI Podiatrist

According to Conway McLean, DPM, "The number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double over the next 40 years, projected to reach 80 million by 2040. Predictably, this equates to an increased incidence of hip fractures. Experts claim the number of hip fractures will nearly double worldwide by 2050. These common but serious injuries can be the result of numerous factors, but bone health is clearly an important one. How do we stay healthy, mobile, strong? One well researched approach is to maintain fitness through exercise. Resistance training can be beneficial to health, especially as we age. Muscle strength declines by 15 percent per decade after age 50, and 30 percent per decade after age 70."

Dr. Conway McLean

"Nutrition must be mentioned, at least perfunctorily, in any discussion on health. Calcium is a mineral we are all familiar with and is a necessity for well-being. Without sufficient levels, you can’t make new bone well, often reducing bone healing after any injury. Vitamin D is also essential, a requirement for the process leading to bone deposition. Interestingly, it acts like a steroid hormone in many ways. D is important in regulating mood and helps to maintain healthy weight levels. Unfortunately, a deficiency of vitamin D is epidemic and is felt to be a part of numerous medical issues globally. If you aren’t taking a vitamin D supplement, chances are moderately good you are deficient," says Dr. McLean.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
MY Podiatrist Provides Foot Health Tips

Fresh socks can help you avoid foot concerns like Athlete's foot. And while we're on the subject of socks, Dan Geller, DPM, sports podiatrist and advisor to Kane Footwear,  suggests buying some moisture-wicking socks to help lessen friction and the chance of developing blisters. Another incredibly simple yet overlooked tip is to make sure you're scrubbing your feet when taking a shower. Don't forget in between your toes!

Dr. Dan Geller

Next, get all injuries checked out by a certified professional. "The foot is very complex and pain is not normal," Dr. Geller says. "Acute pain can easily become chronic pain which will interfere with daily activities as well as sports and workouts. A deep tissue massage is great for the whole body but especially the feet because it stimulates blood flow, assists in muscle and tendon recovery, and breaks down scar tissue."

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
NC Podiatrist Discusses Selecting a Running Shoe for Plantar Fasciitis

Podiatrist Elizabeth Bass Daughtry, DPM says her go-to recommendation for most runners with plantar fasciitis is a neutral running shoe with a basic 10mm heel drop as a starting point.

Dr. Elizabeth Daughtry

“Most running shoes will have an average or higher level of cushioning due to the impact that runners place on their feet,” says Dr. Daughtry. And if you need to, you can add in some arch support insoles or custom orthotics.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Feet Home to More Than 100 Fungi: Study

We all have nearly 200 different types of fungi colonizing our feet, scientists have discovered. Fungi live all over the human body, but their favorite spots are the heel, under toenails and between the toes, according to a new study. A new map of the body's fungal diversity could help combat skin conditions such as athlete's foot, researchers report in Nature journal. Harmless fungi live naturally on skin but cause infection if they multiply.

In the first study of its kind, a U.S. team catalogued the different groups of fungi living on the body in healthy adults. A team led by the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, sequenced the DNA of fungi living on the skin at 14 different body areas in 10 healthy adults. The most complex fungal habitat is the heel, home to about 80 types of fungi. The researchers found about 60 types in toenail clippings and 40 types in swabs between the toes.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Critical Steps for Successful Digital Vendor Selection

Selecting a digital vendor is a complex task in any industry, but it’s especially challenging in healthcare. By following a series of comprehensive and repeatable steps, you can ensure your next digital solution selection process not only succeeds but delivers the results your practice needs.

1.  Identify a capability area - The first and perhaps most important hurdle to clear in any digital solution selection process is narrowing your options to a particular capability area. Is your focus remote patient monitoring (RPM)? Virtual visits? Workforce efficiency? Honing in on specific capabilities not only allows your practice to be specific about the intended impact and ROI, it allows for better scoped and more thorough research at every subsequent step.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Update on the Board Certification Summit?
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM

It has been 10 weeks since APMA hosted a board certification summit to deal with the issues facing our profession. I was one of almost 100 who participated live in Washington on March 20th.

Any progress, updates, meetings between the principles involved? None of us have been given any updates. Thus, I’m writing to the PM News world, requesting on behalf of our profession, for an update on what progress has been made?
