IPMA Podiatric Physicians Volunteer at Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

More than a dozen members of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association volunteered at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Research held in Chicago on June 2-3. Participants raised $6.3 million to advance research to fight breast cancer. The podiatric physician volunteers were: Drs. Kathleen Daly, Marlene Reid, Mark Pietz,  Khalid Husain,  Michael Chin, Joseph Kim, Alice Cisneros, Mansoor Virani, Sarah Mahowald, Neil Horsley, Debra Young, Kathryn Grace, and  Zacharia Facaros. Representatives from the American Society of Podiatric Medical Assistants-Illinois Chapter and students from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine also volunteered in the podiatry tent at the Avon Walk.

The volunteer podiatric physicians staffed the podiatry tent and treated a number of walkers who trekked 13 and 26 miles to raise funds for breast cancer research. Blisters, calluses, and sprained ankles were common ailments. Walkers could access a number of medical services during and after the racing, including the medical and physical therapy tent.

MA Graduate Prepares for Podiatry School

Emily Sanphy of Saugus has her future nicely mapped out. The recent Salem State University graduate will move to New York City at the end of this summer to start podiatry school. “My biggest tip for people who want to go to graduate school is to do a lot of research,” Sanphy said. Many schools have requirements students must meet before enrolling, she said. Plus, you want to make sure you like the field of study, which for Sanphy, meant shadowing a podiatrist.

And even though graduate school is a couple of months way, Sanphy continues to prepare. “Neuroscience, which is a class I have to take in the fall, is hard for me,” she said. “So I’m going to read up on neuroscience topics over the summer.” She said though that might sound “nerdy,” it’s important to “swallow your pride and study.” “I won’t stress as much once school starts,” she added.

IL Podiatrist Joins Hospital Staff and Orthopedic Group

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Brian Burgess to its staff. Brian Burgess, DPM, specializes in podiatry, practices in New Lenox, IL, and graduated from Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his residency at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Chicago.

Burgess, who is certified in both Salto Talaris Total Ankle Replacement and Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement (STAR), will be joining Hinsdale Orthopaedic Associates in Hinsdale, IL in July which currently consists of 26 orthopedic surgeons.

SuccessEHS Acquires IPS

SuccessEHS has announced the acquisition of Integrated Physician Systems (IPS), a comprehensive healthcare professional services firm. IPS offers revenue cycle management, business services and strategic advisory and consulting services to healthcare entities across the U.S. The addition of IPS will incorporate full practice management services into SuccessEHS's current offerings, which include an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Practice Management solution with Integrated Medical Billing Services.

The acquisition transfers full ownership to SuccessEHS from former majority owners Drs. Gene Pascarella, Robert Katz, and Jon Hultman, who will all remain with IPS in a long-term consulting capacity. Integrated Physician Systems (IPS) was founded in 2000 as a healthcare professional services firm to 250 healthcare professionals in 35 states. IPS currently manages approximately $250 million in accounts receivable.

Barefoot Running More Efficient

Runners are faster with "minimalist" shoes, but they can also injure themselves during the transition to this barefoot running style, researchers reported here at the American College of Sports Medicine 59th Annual Meeting. One study showed that competitive runners shaved about 20 seconds off a 1-mile run by taking off their shoes. However, another documented 37 injuries in a group of 109 serious runners.

In another study presented, conducted at Adrian College in Michigan, competitive runners tried Vibram Five Finger Bikila shoes. These shoes resemble gloves for feet and have a thin tread. They are supposed to simulate running barefoot while providing some protection. The runners ran 1 mile faster with these shoes than with traditional running shoes (7.17 ± 1.04 vs 7.36 ± 1.06; P = .004). The researchers calculated that the weight of the shoe accounted for only 18% of the difference in speed.

Association to Study Liability Risks of EHRs

The American Health Lawyers Association will sponsor a year-long research project to address patient-safety events and malpractice liability stemming from the implementation of electronic health-record systems, the association has announced.

The goal is to produce tools and a checklist of best practices “to help minimize the occurrence of EHR-related errors,” according to an association news release. The research project is supported by a $45,000 contribution from the American Hospital Association-affiliated American Society of Healthcare Risk Management to the AHLA's public interest committee.

Set Phone Policy

Make conscious choices about when you answer the phone. Otherwise, you will be a slave to the ringing, and it will interrupt you throughout the day. These practices allow you to be responsive and professional:

•  Use the phone features. Check caller ID to decide whether you should pick up. Record a greeting that provides important information to callers. Example: “I will return all calls by 5 p.m.,” assures people that they don’t need to keep dialing until you answer.
•  Guard your numbers. If you do tell patients your personal number, also explain when it is okay to call that line, so they don’t abuse the privilege.
•  Schedule phone time. Set two or three times during the day to check messages and make calls, just as you should for your email.

Dr. Steinberg said something that could not be more true when it comes to what our responsibility is as not only members of this profession, but also for those dues-paying members of their state association. It is those doctors I am speaking to directly. The ones who are not dues-paying members of their respective associations (primarily here in New York), I really don't care that much about, as it is WE who are not only carrying the water for all podiatrists who will benefit from our labor, but also paying the bill for that water and that labor.
 
Regarding Title XIX, Dr. Steinberg states, "A permanent place in Medicaid requires the passage of Title XIX, something the APMA has thus far not been able to do. But, I don't place the blame at the feet of the APMA. I place the blame at the feet of every single podiatrist who cannot produce copies of multiple e-mails to their congressmen and senators."
 
As president of my local chapter of the NYSPMA, I ask repeatedly that our members simply send a letter, phone call, or utilize the Cap Wiz program to immediately send a letter to their respective legislator(s) regarding the issues we continue to fight for on a daily basis. The fact that the Cap Wiz site has been taken down by the APMA due to lack of use by members (and I do not blame APMA), speaks volumes to the apathy that exists in this profession by so many of us. For those of you who have not used Cap Wiz, or lobbied your Legislators, gone to "Lobby Day" or sent a check to either the APMA PAC as well as your local state PAC, you should not only be ashamed of yourselves, but you should also not bitch and moan when things do not go your way.  Things may have been different if you had contributed.

Dr. Roberts proclaims, “The reason I entered into the profession was so that I could be all-encompassing in medicine AND surgery.” Wow! He adjusts his proclamation by saying that anything he can’t handle, he will send to the appropriate clinician. Okay. But the striking thing about his proclamation is that he feels exactly like the podiatric colleges want students to feel when they “enter” into the profession. By the third year, it becomes clear that medicine is trivialized, and trips to Russia to learn Illizarov techniques are glorified.

We simply need to drop the “all encompassing” mentality and stop beating each other up. The American Board of Podiatric Medicine will be the first step, as hopefully those of us who love podiatric medicine will not be second fiddle to the surgical arm of the profession, which is wholly and absolutely and undeniably a situation we created for ourselves. Only when the ABPM certification is also a “certification you can trust,” will we be truly colleagues within  our own profession, as the MD and DO communities enjoy. I should live so long.
