According to Monique Mitchell, DPM. MPH, "Every year, May 31 is celebrated as World No Tobacco Day. Smoking cigarettes has long been known to have detrimental health effects on the body, contributing to problems such as heart disease and lung cancer. Smoking can also have many lesser known but just as deadly health effects on the feet. The feet are the farthest part of the body from the heart and the blood flow can be severely decreased by smoking, causing many effects on the skin and bones on the feet."

"The effect of smoking on health especially in the feet is known to have significant negative impact. If you are a smoker, you are encouraged to stop smoking, especially if you are planning to undergo foot and ankle surgery. It is not easy to overcome a smoking/nicotine addiction; however, there are many methods to assist with smoking cessation including gums, patches, electronic cigarettes, medications, and others. Contact your primary care physicians and get help. It is worth it to stop smoking to ensure healing and good functioning of your feet."

4 Tips on Physician Practice Succession Planning
There are several options available if you are a private practice owner looking for advice on how to establish a succession plan. Here are four tips on getting started:
2. Create a buy-sell agreement
Once you have decided your successor, you need to ensure your private practice succession plan is legally protected. There are several legal arrangements you can make to plan for succession, and one of the most popular is creating a buy-sell agreement. A buy-sell agreement allows you to make provisions that govern what will happen when you decide to leave your practice. You can state who will own your practice, how shares will be allocated if there are multiple owners, and at what price to sell shares.
Even if your retirement is more than 10 years away, creating a buy-sell agreement is a good idea. Buy-sell agreements can determine what will happen if unforeseen circumstances, such as bankruptcy or personal injury, force you to leave the practice of medicine earlier than expected. This will ensure your chosen successor (or successors) are legally able to transition into ownership when you step down.

This is going to hurt my wallet. My dental woes are set to cost several thousands of dollars. An out-of-pocket but unavoidable expense. Eagerly looking for a scenic distraction, my eye is drawn to a Day Spa Salon, advertising the “Medical Pedicure”.

As random and prevalent mass murder is occurring, due to the unfettered access to guns, I don't feel safe, anywhere. Seeing what happened in Oklahoma, the gunman was just a few days post-op. He went out and bought an AR-15 and used it two hours later. How do you predict that?
Today, I was supposed to be at the Rotary International Convention in Houston. After the two murderous rampages, that killed 21 people, I canceled. No, I do not feel safe.

We wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Jacobs that Dr. Owens’ accomplishment is tremendous and is a tribute to her skills, hard work, and dedication. However, I would like to take the opportunity to correct a few inaccuracies in Dr. Jacob’s message. First and foremost, prior to the passage of APMA’s bill to classify podiatrists within the physicians & dentists pay grade, the law was clear that only an MD could serve as chief of staff of a VA facility.
We have no doubt that Dr. Saunders did serve in a leadership capacity, and perhaps he will comment himself to clarify, but I suspect he served as the Chief of Surgery or as an Acting Chief of Staff while the agency worked to identify a permanent replacement. Until Dr. Owens’ appointment this year, there have been ZERO podiatrists officially appointed Chiefs of Staff of VA facilities. As Jeffrey Robbins, DPM, Podiatric Medical Director for the VA, pointed out, APMA’s legislation paved the way for Dr. Owens to be appointed. We are extremely proud of Dr. Owens for this accomplishment.
