Michael Downey. DPM recently explained the attitude necessary to making the most of your residency on Ben Pearl's DPM's podcast Fit Foot U. Dr. Downey has been involved with the Penn Medicine residency program as an attending and is the chief of podiatric surgery.

His final word was that you only get one chance to have one residency and it is up to you to have a learning mentality to get the most out of it. Dr. Downey continues to be an opinion leader and is wary of over-hyped surgical trends. He emphasizes principles that apply to the specific patient in front of you.

CA Podiatrist Lectures at National Academy of Sciences Event
Dr. David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at Keck School of Medicine of USC, became the first podiatric surgeon to deliver a lecture at a National Academy of Sciences event. The workshop, titled “Developing Wearable Technologies to Advance Understanding of Precision Environmental Health,” was chaired by Dr. Rima Habre, a renowned researcher at USC and leader of the Geospatial Working Group in the national NIH Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program.

Professor Armstrong’s lecture highlighted the cutting-edge work done at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Sponsored Center to Stream Healthcare in Place (C2SHiP). He emphasized the team’s ongoing efforts in diverse areas of wearable and implantable technology, from activity monitoring and smart socks to smart implantables and epidermal electronics.

NY Podiatrist & Sister Charged with Second Plot to Kill Wife
Ira Bernstein, DPM has been accused a second time of trying to get his wife killed, this time with the alleged aid of his sister. In a case that drew national attention, Bernstein and then-girlfriend Kelly Gribeluk of Airmont were convicted in 2017 of plotting to a hire a hitman to run over Bernstein's wife. Both served around four years in prison.

“Industry First” Watch with Blood Sugar Monitor Announced by Huawei
Huawei has announced the Watch 4, a smartwatch it claims is the “industry's first smart watch” with what it calls “high blood sugar risk” features. The watch has been announced in China, and there’s currently no word on when it will come to other countries. It is unlikely to ever see an official launch in the U.S.

However, it is a notable watch thanks to its unusual blood glucose feature, which should be of particularly interest to those with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Huawei’s consumer CEO Yu Chengdong describes it as the result of “high blood sugar risk assessment research,” on Chinese social network Weibo.

$4M Verdict Against GA Podiatrist for Severed Nerve
Facts: In November 2015, Defendant performed an open reduction internal fixation of a Weber B spiral oblique left distal fibular fracture on Christine Perron. At her initial post-op examination, Ms. Perron complained of pain in the foot, ankle and calf, as well as nausea, dizziness, light-headedness, and shortness of breath. Examinations that followed revealed pain to Ms. Perron’s distal lateral ankle with fibula, mild pain to the lateral ankle, ecchymosis, and edema. Defendant eventually diagnosed Ms. Perron with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).
In February 2016, Ms. Perron sought answers from another expert – Dr. Erroll Bailey of Resurgens Orthopaedics, citing a history of stabbing,..

Verdict: During a trial in late May 2023, a jury found that Defendant’s employer at the time of the surgery, was responsible for severing Ms. Perron’s nerve. Because Ms. Perron will live with CRPS for the rest of her life, the jury awarded her $4 million in compensatory damages.

RE: Advice for Expatriates Returning to U.S.

For a podiatrist who leaves the country and is unable to practice upon return, there is another consideration. Since I retired in Maryland, I maintain an inactive license for $50 a year. If I elect to return to practice, all I need to do is make up all missed continuing education credits. I don't intend to return to practice, but if I need to, it's nice to know I can. I don't know if this is available in all states.
