FL Podiatrist Discusses Summertime Footcare
Gideon J. Lewis, DPM, medical director of the Foot & Ankle Sports Medicine Institute was featured on WKMG, News6 “Ask a Doctor” segment providing guidance on summertime foot health. “During the summer months we are spending more time outside, so it’s best to get a stable sandal. I like one with a strap around the heel. It provides more support and stability to prevent sprains, and the dreaded plantar fasciitis,” said Dr. Lewis.

When asked about wearing flip-flips, Lewis said, “My analogy is to treat flip-flops like candy. Wear them in moderation. If you are doing a long walk downtown, or a long stroll shopping, you want to choose something more supportive for your feet, or a good walking shoe.”

FL Podiatry Residents Lead Mission Trip to Trinidad and Tobago
Trevor Rossi Baddaloo, DPM, PGY-2 resident at Mercy Hospital Miami/Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine along with Willem Sorgeloos, DPM, PGY-2, created the non-profit Foot and Ankle Foundation of the Caribbean (FAFCA). FAFCA’s first trip was on May 18, 2019. On this trip, over 150 patients were seen. 80 diabetic inserts were provided, over 100+ bone density screenings were performed, 10 pairs of sneakers were distributed, and several total contact castings were made. A core part of the visit was spent on diabetic education and proper foot care.

The goal of this non-profit organization is not only to provide free healthcare such as clinic visits, medication, and surgeries but to promote free education in the form of lectures, workshops, scholarships, and research grants. Another trip is planned in a couple of months.

10 Ways to Strengthen Your Strategic Plan - Part 1
A strategic plan is not just a document written by physicians and managers and then filed away for safekeeping. It is a vision for the practice, owned by the practice. For a medical practice to succeed, everyone must engage with and live and breathe the plan. Here are 10 questions to assess your strategic plan.
1. Will your strategy beat the market? - Each year, perform a thorough analysis to get a clear picture of how the competing forces in your specialty are likely to play out. To grow at an accelerated pace, you will need a meaningful point of difference that can’t be easily copied or nullified. Mindlessly copying another practice’s business model is not a strategy — it is a recipe for mediocrity.

Query: Coding Multiple Exostectomies
We have a patient who underwent the removal of three dorsal osteophytes through the same incision. Is it appropriate to bill CPT 28122 three times?
Archived Codingline Question
Response: The CPT code 28122 states the following as its definition, “Partial excision (craterization, saucerization, sequestrectomy, or diaphysectomy) bone (e.g., osteomyelitis or bossing); tarsal or metatarsal bone, except talus or calcaneus).
Therefore, any tarsal or metatarsal bone on the foot, except the talus or calcaneus, requiring an exostectomy (no matter how many places the procedure is performed) would only use “1 unit” for this code based on its definition.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B | |
RE: The Passing of Alan K. Whitney, DPM
In addition to his academic leadership in biomechanics, Dr. Whitney had a great sense of humor and stage appeal. My favorite Alan Whitney story was at a pediatric seminar in Cherry Hill, NJ. He was lecturing on equinus. He said there were 3 types of equinus. The first, maybe 0 to minus 10 degrees. “I stretch those out with stretching exercises.” The second, greater than minus 10 degrees, “I send those to the surgeons.” The third, “those kids who just won’t cooperate. You try to measure them and they keep kicking and screaming and the parents just stand there and do nothing. I send those to the surgeons.” He paused, looked at the audience, and with perfect Jack Benny timing said, “I never liked a smart ass kid.”
He was indeed a valuable teacher, motivator, and humorist. RIP. You were and will always remain a treasure.
