IA Podiatrist Discusses Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis can be alleviated with rest and heel lifts, which reduce tension in the tendon. Podiatrist Dr. Gregory McCarthy said, "we'll evaluate and determine whether somebody has that problem instead of just giving them a heel lift. We'll actually give them types of inserts or special shoes that will help."
|
Dr. Gregory McCarthy |
Patients, McCarthy said, often think the sharp stabbing pain they feel in the inner part of their heel is caused by a heel spur. He said it's actually plantar fasciitis. Special inserts and shoes are prescribed first. Then McCarthy said medications, injections, and night splints can be tried.

Jogging Requires Both Stretching and Muscle Strenghtening: CT Podiatrist
"Although losing weight through exercise is slower than by calorie restriction, it is more effective. An excellent form of exercise for improved health is jogging. It is simple, requires no special skills, and can be enjoyed at any age. It is convenient and involves a minimum of time each week. From a physiological standpoint, it is an excellent form of exercise as it puts a moderate amount of stress on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems," says podiatrist Dr. Robert Weiss."
|
Dr. Robert Weiss |
"The more you jog, the more muscle imbalances can occur. Daily exercise for stretching and strengthening of the muscles is very important in your jogging program. The calf, hamstring (back of the leg and thigh), and lower back muscles can become contracted and shortened, as well as tight and inflexible. Therefore, it is extremely important to stretch these muscles. Also, the shin, quadriceps (front of thigh), and belly muscles can become weakened. It is therefore important to strengthen these muscles," says Dr. Weiss.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION |
House Panel Votes To Repeal Medical Device Tax, IPAB
The House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday voted to repeal two pieces of ObamaCare. The committee advanced measures that would repeal the medical device tax and a cost-cutting panel known as the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). Both bills are scheduled to go to the House floor the week of June 15. “I’m happy to say a lot of these bills have broad, bipartisan support,” said Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), the committee's chairman. “I’d like to think they’re just common sense.”
Members of both parties have criticized the 2.3 percent tax on medical device manufacturers, which helps fund ObamaCare, as stifling innovation and hurting the industry. Bipartisan attacks have also been waged against IPAB, which is tasked with recommending cuts in Medicare spending if it rises above a certain level. Critics warn the system could lead to unelected bureaucrats making important decisions about seniors’ care. While the device tax repeal passed the Ways and Means Committee on a mostly party-line vote, seven Democrats joined Republicans in voting to repeal the IPAB.

MALPRACTICE |
To Be Sued Less, Doctors Should Consider Talking to Patients More
Doctors call it defensive medicine. They order extra tests, perform extra procedures, or push for more office visits because they think that without them, they’re at greater risk of being sued. But studies don’t support the notion that this extra precaution reduces their risk.
What might help physicians avoid being sued is getting along better with their patients. Or at least, they could become better communicators. Sometimes, when confronted with such assertions, doctors lash out. It’s the system’s fault. It’s the lawyers. It’s greedy patients. But these declarations ignore one important fact: Lawsuits aren’t random. Some doctors are sued far more than others.

Providers Want CMS to Slow Down EHR Superhighway
Hospitals are imploring CMS to slow down its pace as it works to have providers adopt and meaningfully use electronic health records. In March, the agency released a proposed rule for what it called Stage 3 of getting providers to make the digital change. The proposed rule would require nearly all providers to report on a full calendar-year cycle beginning in 2017 and would require electronic reporting of clinical quality measures beginning in 2018.
Comments on the proposals were due May 29. The CMS received more than 400, mostly negative, responses. Physicians and other eligible professionals who fail to meet the requirements are expected to pay $500 million in Medicare penalties between 2018 and 2020, according to the proposed rule. Upgrading EHRs to meet the requirements, the agency estimates, will cost physicians $54,000, plus $10,000 in annual maintenance costs.
