Surge in Hiking Falls Sparks Safety Warning From UT Podiatrist

A fatal fall at Zion National Park and a critical injury near Moab this spring prompted St. George podiatrist Landon Cameron, DPM to share hiking safety guidance. Dr. Cameron urges outdoor enthusiasts to pay closer attention to foot stability and trail preparation before heading onto local terrain.

Dr. Landon Cameron

Cameron advises hikers to address chronic ankle weakness or prior injuries before tackling demanding trails, noting that conditions such as stress fractures and Achilles tendinitis can worsen significantly under the demands of steep or rocky terrain. He also emphasizes preparation and pacing as habits that protect hikers on the trail. “We see patients who pushed through discomfort on a hike and ended up with injuries that required weeks of recovery,” Cameron said. “Stretch your calves and Achilles tendon before you go, condition your ankles in the weeks leading up to a demanding hike, and know when to turn around.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 Steps to Build an AI Governance Plan for Your Practice

Here are 8 practical steps to govern AI in your practice, from naming an owner to vetting vendors and training your team.

4. Put your AI rules in writing

Unwritten norms do not survive staff turnover. Document what data can or cannot go into a tool, how output is checked before it reaches the chart, what is disclosed to patients, and who signs off on new uses. The American Medical Association offers practical guidance on developing AI policies that limit the liability exposure, which consistently ranks among physicians’ biggest concerns

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
3 Ways to Potentially Avoid Falling Into a Tax Trap in Retirement

You may think you'll pay less in taxes once you retire, but the reality is that the combination of taxable withdrawals and Social Security can easily hike your tax bill just as high as when you were working. Here are a few strategies to consider.

3A. Organize withdrawals by bucket.

Retirees often pull money from accounts in the wrong order, incurring tax consequences they could have otherwise avoided. Taking too little from your tax-deferred accounts can lead to huge RMDs later in life. Taking too much early can increase your taxes and, potentially, your tax bracket.

It would be ideal to have a strategy that balances withdrawals from your taxable accounts, IRA (tax-deferred accounts) and Roth, while considering the income from Social Security and pensions. The order in which you take withdrawals isn't a hard-and-fast rule. A sensible approach is to have three buckets of money:
  • Taxable (brokerage accounts)
  • Tax-deferred (IRA/401(k), etc.)
  • Tax-free (Roth)

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Stress Fractures

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

6. Imaging

Radiographs can lag—sometimes by up to two weeks—so a normal x-ray early on doesn’t rule out a stress fracture. This is where clinical judgment matters. Listen to the patient. Athletes who have been through this before often recognize the feeling.

I remember in college having a strong sense that something wasn’t right, even when my initial x-rays came back normal. It wasn’t until we obtained an MRI that multiple stress fractures became clear—and repeat radiographs a week later finally caught up. The takeaway is simple: if the history and exam are pointing you in a certain direction, trust that. Don’t let a “normal” early image be falsely reassuring.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (AI)
RE: Evaluating Trusted Locally Controlled AI Systems
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM

The deployment of artificial intelligence within clinical settings should ensure data privacy and clinical accuracy. Emerging open-source platforms—such as LM Studio and Ollama—now enable individual podiatrists to deploy localized, private Large Language Models (LLMs) directly on secure hardware. This architecture allows practitioners to enter evidence-based reference materials into a local database. The LLM can then be queried exclusively against this trusted dataset, minimizing the risk of "hallucinations" while maintaining strict confidentiality.

I believe that the American Podiatric Medical Association should consider actively developing and distributing verified, standardized datasets optimized for members to securely upload into secure LLM systems.
