PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
OH Podiatrist Discusses ESWT for Heel Pain

It's one of the top reasons people are sidelined from walking or running; heel pain. But a therapy might help cure it. Dr. Kristin Titko said, “It is called the ESWT machine, and it stands for Extra Corporeal Shock Wave therapy.

Dr. Kristin Titko

It sounds like shock therapy for the brain; it's not like shock therapy for the brain. It's actually sound waves and the sound waves penetrate or hit the foot which breaks up scar tissue that’s inside, putting a chronic problem such as heel pain into an acute injury so the body can repair itself.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR

NY Podiatrist Comments on Full-Time Flats vs. Get-Ahead Office Heels

The dilemma: You've finally found a pair of cute yet podiatrist-approved comfortable shoes, but they don't really go with your power outfits. Is it better to have happy feet or versatile ones? The advice: While it's obviously healthier for your feet to favor supportive flats over stilettos (which have been proven to shorten the calf muscles), it's not a good idea to wear any type of shoe all of the time, says Hillary Brenner, DPM, a podiatric surgeon and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Hillary Brenner

If you wear flats exclusively, your tolerance for heels could decrease to the point where you'll feel miserable wearing them to formal events like a presentation or a wedding, and you'll risk rolling your ankle and straining your ligaments. To keep your foot muscles flexible and your shoe confidence high, Brenner recommends regularly varying your heel height from flats to two-inch heels -- and never walking very far in heels higher than that.

CMS Releases 2013 Hospital, Physician Data

The opening of this week’s Health Datapalooza conference in Washington was the setting for a new Medicare data dump on physician and hospital inpatient/outpatient payment and utilization rates.

This is the third annual release of data as part of the Obama administration’s information transparency initiative to promote increased quality of care and more informed healthcare spending by consumers. A link to the inpatient dataset is here, the outpatient dataset is here, and the physician/supplier dataset is here.

E-HEALTH NEWS
CMS Opens its Data to the Private Sector

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will make its data available to the private sector for the first time, the agency’s acting administrator announced Tuesday in Washington. Previously, CMS data has only been available to researchers not intending to develop commercial products. It now will be available to innovators and entrepreneurs, CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt said at the Health Datapalooza conference. “We do this with the clear expectation that you will create new streams of tools to improve care.”

CMS will further allow companies to combine the agency’s data with private data. “In taking this step, we challenge others with proprietary data to follow our lead and remove barriers to getting better care faster,” Slavitt said. “It will be good for everybody.” In a statement, CMS noted that the data would not permit identification of patients, but would provide the identity of providers of care. The agency in September 2015 will start accepting research requests.

Does anyone know if these hand-held, portable, fluoroscopy units are still manufactured or available? They were available in the early '90s, but I can't seem to locate the manufacturer.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B

Check the rescue missions, indigent facilities, etc. If you have the desire, you may want to do housecalls for the homebound. Feel free to contact me as I do all. It's great payback and very rewarding. Good luck!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C
From: Jeanine Jones Moss, DPM

Contact the health clinics in your area that provide free medical care to the uninsured or under-insured. They will appreciate any time you can volunteer because podiatry services are usually under-represented when medical volunteers are requested. The clinics will usually provide all of the supplies and space you will need.
