FL Podiatrist Diagnoses Malignant Melanoma in Patient's Heel
During Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Lloyd Bent, a 77-year-old patient at Broward Health, reflected on his recent battle with skin cancer. Bent’s story began in Jamaica when he noticed a small spot on his heel. Despite several visits to the doctor for further examination, a biopsy was never recommended. Bent relocated to South Florida.
|
Dr. Rishad Ahmed |
In March 2023, Bent’s wife noticed an alarming lesion on his heel. After a biopsy was done by Rishad Ahmed, DPM, a podiatrist at Broward Health, it was revealed that Bent had melanoma, deeply embedded within his heel. Lloyd was immediately referred to a hematologist-oncologist and a surgical oncologist, both with the Broward Health Physician Group. The doctors worked together to create a comprehensive plan, guided by their expertise. Bent underwent a melanoma resection procedure in June 2023 to eradicate the cancer.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
MD Podiatrist Provides Tips on Avoiding Summer Injuries
According to Lauren Newnam, DPM, "With summer sports and camp season on the horizon, it’s important to know how you or your child can avoid sports injuries this summer. While it’s impossible to prevent every injury, there are some steps you can take to help make injury less likely. Start now to be prepared for when the season gets underway.
|
Dr. Lauren Newnam |
"Proper equipment, including footwear, is a must. Wearing running sneakers for tennis, pickleball, and other court sports puts you at high risk for injury. Court shoes are a must for these activities, and like any other protective gear, they must fit well, be in good condition, and be sized appropriately," says Dr. Newnam.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
SD Podiatrist Sponsors Affordable Prosthetics Project
In the developing world, it is estimated that over 40 million people live with amputated limbs stemming from health complications or trauma. Unfortunately, only 2 million of them have access to prosthetics that could help them live a better and more comfortable life. Why? Prosthetics are expensive, and for many people in the developing world, they are far too costly to even be considered a feasible option.
|
Dr. Steven King |
A team of South Dakota State University mechanical engineering students has worked to solve this problem by developing a cheap and affordable prosthetic that can be made and built with materials that are readily available around the world. The team incorporated a patented foot design from Rapid City-based podiatrist Steven King, DPM, who sponsored the project. The students then expanded on the design to fit their specific ideas. They found the patented dual-lever system creates an efficient energy transfer with each step. The total cost for the prosthetic is roughly $70 — far cheaper than that of a direct competitor, which sells for around $3,000.

IA Podiatrist Retires After 47 years
“I didn’t call what I did work. I loved what I did,” said podiatrist Randy Crampton, DPM, 72, as he prepares to retire from his Storm Lake practice after 47 years. The graduate of Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine rented the building in 1977. It was formerly inhabited by MDs Art Ames and Paul Brecher who were retiring at the time. His ability to perform surgery was a step up from foot doctor Bob Morris, DPM who was also retiring at the time.
|
Dr. Randy Crampton |
R.L. Crampton Foot and Ankle Clinic expanded to satellite offices in Spencer in 1978 and Denison soon after that. Crampton’s patients are saying goodbye to the “white shirt guy,” – he always wears a white shirt – as his last day approaches. He’s not moving though. Retirement will offer him more time to spend with his wife Cheryl on their acreage south of Storm Lake.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Issues Physicians Should Consider Prior to Selling Their Practice
Recent legislative and rulemaking activity at both the federal and state levels, along with changes in certain deal dynamics, are sure to impact physician practice transactions going forward. Following is a list of five new issues physician practice owners should consider in advance of a transaction. Many of these items should be addressed in advance of going to market or accepting indications of interest from potential buyers.
1. How will you treat employed physicians in a transaction in the absence of non-competes? The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) final rule prohibits post-employment non-competes. However, non-competes remain permissible in connection with the sale of a business or an ownership interest. Although the final rule currently is subject to challenge in the courts, the FTC appears confident that the rule will be upheld. Consider whether employed physicians should become owners in the practice prior to a transaction and receive proceeds and rollover equity in order to ensure that they will be bound by post-transaction non-competes. In addition, consider beefing up confidential information, trade secret, and other restrictive covenants.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC STUDENTS) |
RE: NYCPM Student’s Act of Bravery
From: Robert J. Stabile, DPM
I would just like to pass forward the acknowledgement today from senior leadership at NUMC to 3rd year student Muhammed Hussain for his brave act a few days ago in which he stepped in to save one of the nurses from a violent attack from a psych patient that broke free from restraints. Because of his immediate actions he helped avoid an even more dangerous situation towards the nurse who was being physically assaulted and, in the act, he had been punched in his face by the patient.
|
Muhammed Hussain |
Of note, Muhammed is okay. I was happy to see his good deed get acknowledged as he represented NYCPM and is a testament to the quality and professionalism of our students that the College is training and sending out to our hospitals.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OIG NEWS) |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
I have been in touch with the American Orthotics and Prosthetics Association (AOPA) for years on this issue. For the most part, the devices mentioned in this report are off-the-shelf, and many are done by off shore marketing companies and fraudulent providers. AOPA has sponsored a bill which APMA has backed for several years which would no longer permit drop shipment of orthotic devices, including but not limited to spinal or knee braces.
I urge every reader of this platform to review previous emails sent from APMA and/or search the APMA website for the appropriate legislative links in order to contact their legislators. Make them aware of the rampant fraud created by off shore drop shipping devices and the threat it poses to the Medicare Trust Fund. This legislation poses no threat to podiatrists or responsible DMEPOS providers. It can serve to make extinct fraudulent providers who never interact with patients and whose only aim is to steal from the taxpayers.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY
