OH Podiatrist Discusses 4 Common Causes of Morning Foot Pain
If your feet hurt when you wake up in the morning, you might have plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, or arthritis. According to podiatrist Dina Stock, DPM, foot pain or heel pain in the morning can be caused by a number of conditions due to lack of support or over-used tendons or ligaments. If you experience foot pain in the morning, try stretching before you get out of bed and throughout the day. You may also want to consider wearing a night splint to help position your affected foot at a 90-degree angle while you sleep.
|
Dr. Dina Stock |
“A lot of times, if your pain is mild or moderate, the first thing we’re going to do is change your support, recommend a stretching protocol, provide icing recommendations and activity modification,” says Dr. Stock.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
IL Podiatrist Provides Post-Race Advice
According to Sabrina Landers, DPM, "Self-care following the race is paramount! Consuming 12 to 24 ounces of water with electrolytes and eating a meal high in carbohydrates 30 minutes to two hours following the race refills your body’s depleted stores."
|
Dr. Sabrina Landers |
Change out of your running shoes! Find a comfortable pair of non-constricting shoes or sandals that avoid all pressure points established during the race. Don’t forget your nightly full body stretch to relieve the lactic acid build-up from your day. Enjoy a full night’s rest basking in the glow of your recent stellar accomplishment," says Dr. Landers.

WV Podiatrist Participates in Walk With a Doc Program
Trinity Health System is encouraging Belmont County residents to take a step toward better health with its Walk with a Doc health program that brings doctors and patients together. The first physician participant was Vincent Kolenich, DPM. Dr. Kolenich is a primary care podiatric physician who has been practicing for more than 25 years in Belmont County and understands the importance of footcare and proper shoe wear, especially when starting or maintaining an exercise program.
|
Dr. Vincent Kolenich |
“There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer, and Type 2 diabetes,” said Kolenich. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

IL Podiatrist Discusses How to Buy Good Flip-Flops
Flip-flops have a bad reputation for messing up your feet. But, it turns out, there are plenty of flip-flops that are actually supportive and comfortable — and look good. "Flip-flops have come a long way," Melissa Lockwood, DPM, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, IL, tells Yahoo Life. "There are some really good ones out there now that don't look orthopedic, but still give you good arch support."
|
Dr. Melissa Lockwood |
If you're looking for a new pair of flip-flops, Dr. Lockwood recommends steering clear of flat ones that don't have a strong bottom. Meaning, if you can easily bend the base of your flip-flop, that's an issue. "That will be almost like you're walking barefoot," she says. Instead, look for flip-flops with at least a quarter to a half-inch of arch support on the bottom. "They should not be completely flat," Lockwood says. Ideally, you also want something with a thick, sturdy thong, too, to help your toes get a comfortable grip.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Boost Your Practice’s Online Reputation
Reputation management is a crucial component for independent practices to thrive. An effective reputation management strategy will drive new patient acquisition and patient retention and strengthen patient-doctor relationships. It should be no surprise to learn that healthcare practices already using technology to engage with current and prospective patients are well-positioned to build connections and provide better care.
3. Fully optimize your healthcare website
Having a mobile-first site is extremely important. According to Pew Research Center, 62 percent of those surveyed use their mobile devices to gather health-related information, outranking online banking. Because of the increased usage of smartphones, Google focuses on mobile content for both indexing and ranking purposes. By providing the value on desktop and mobile devices, you can reach patients where they are and positively impact your rankings.
In addition to a mobile-first approach, your website should provide a pleasant experience and invite users to engage and interact with your practice. By delivering relevant content and new information about your services, visitors will spend more time on your site, leading to a higher conversion rate. Your website should also include strong keywords throughout the content, sticky calls-to-action to convert visitors into patients, SEO-friendly content pages, and lightning-fast speeds.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: DME and wRVU
I was wondering if anyone came up with a fair calculation for wRVU for DME dispensed? If so, how could you apply that to an employed physician in a hospital system?
Codingline Member, Hackensack, NJ
Response: I currently work in an employed situation with a health system. We do not get any credit for DME dispensed. I have yet to hear of a situation where there is a standard compensation model to reimburse an employed physician with wRVUs for dispensing DME.
