CA Podiatrist Testifies on Value of Podiatry-Supervised HBO Treatments

Lee C. Rogers, DPM of Los Angeles CA testified in front of Novitas Solutions on May 28, the Medicare Administrative Contractor for PA, NJ, MD, DE, DC, CO, NM, TX, OK, AR, LA, and MS, about a draft LCD which would eliminate podiatrists from being reimbursed to supervise hyperbaric oxygen therapy in those states.

Dr. Lee Rogers testifies in front of Novitas Solutions

Using statements from CPME, ABPM, and ABFAS, Dr. Rogers testified about a podiatrist's education, training, and experience. He opined that it is beyond the authority of a MAC to determine the scope of practice for podiatry, and instead, this is determined by the state licensing boards. He presented cumulative data on over 27,000 consecutive HBO treatments supervised by podiatrists, without a single serious adverse event (death, pneumothorax, seizure). Rogers pointed out that podiatrists are already supervising HBO safely and eliminating DPMs as providers is a solution without a problem. The community of interest has until July 8 to submit written comments to Novitas.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OH Podiatrist to Be Featured Speaker at Heart and Sole Challenge

North Ridgeville is not only talking the talk, it's walking the walk when it comes to promoting health and wellness. The city is part of a collaborative financed through the United Way. It consists of the community working towards increasing access to and awareness of physical activity and nutrition resources in an effort to reduce metabolic syndrome (obesity, heart disease, and diabetes).
Dr. Joy Rowland

The initiative is called the North Ridgeville Heart and Sole Challenge and its goal, as posted on its website, is to increase access to physical activity and healthy foods. Healthy Strides combines a casual 30-minute walk, preceded by a brief informative talk by local health professionals and city officials. On July 15, Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Joy Rowland, DPM will be the featured speaker.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS

NeuroMetrix Launches Quell Devices

NeuroMetrix, an innovative healthcare company that develops wearable medical technology and point-of-care tests to help patients and physicians manage chronic pain, nerve diseases, and sleep disorders, reported that it has begun to ship Quell devices to healthcare providers in the U.S. Quell is an over-the-counter wearable pain relief device that utilizes proprietary non-invasive neurostimulation technology to provide pain relief.

Dr. Hal Ornstein

Since the company fielded its direct sales force in mid-April, over 100 physician practices providing front-line care to patients with chronic pain have purchased Quell to stock for resale to their patients. These practices include podiatrists, chiropractors, pain specialists, and others. "Patients come to us looking for comprehensive solutions," said Dr. Hal Ornstein, a New Jersey-based podiatrist and Chairman of the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL -LEGAL)
From: Mark Johnson, DPM

We have experience dating back to 2010 with these audits. You may be successful at a higher level of appeal such as re-determination, but we generally avoid dispensing unless the MD or DO has signed the diabetic note.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Tips to Collect More from Patients - Part 10

10. Collect at Time of Service

Tell patients in advance of appointments that they will need to pay co-pays and known deductibles at the time of service. Patients unwilling or unable to pay should be rescheduled, unless it is an emergency. – Ericka L. Adler, attorney

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A
From: David Secord, DPM

I considered Goffredo a close friend, after meeting him at a VPMA meeting where I was lecturing on bone tumors and burn assessment and treatment. We watched a number of soccer matches together and I got to meet his wife and sons (who were delightful). I kept in contact with him on a regular basis, discussing research topics, concerns about residents and hospital requirements, and who we thought may have a strong season on the field.

My deepest condolences go out to his family and residents. I was hoping to travel to Italy with Goffredo at some point and now…..it will not happen. He was a wonderful guy, a lot of fun to hang out with, and I will miss our long talks on the phone every couple of months. RIP, my friend. I am incredibly bummed right now.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B
From: Daniel Jones, DPM

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Ianiro this past weekend. Dr. Ianiro was my boss, my residency director, and one of my attending doctors. I learned quite a bit from Dr. Ianiro, and am thankful to him for a job and chance at his program in Erie, PA.

I remember meeting him when I came to the hospital, and recall his classical Italian intensity. As one of his residents, I can tell you that he cared deeply about the program and his residents. He dedicated long hours to ensure our success as doctors, and he was a devoted family man. I, and the other residents at Millcreek Community Hospital, will miss him. He left an impression on us all.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

I have had the fortune of spending time with Bret preparing for lectures,  presenting together, as well as appearing on his radio Internet show. I learned long ago that his passion for life and his dedication to his patients and our profession was the real deal.

My recent conversation with him just the other day, assured me that has not changed. After he recounted all his operations, injuries, and his luck at coming out alive, I was impressed that his zest for life and passion about his profession had not changed one bit. I am convinced that he has the strength, courage, and determination he will need to get through this awful ordeal.

Bret, I know you're reading this and I know all your colleagues wish you the same - a speedy recovery, and hope to see you soon at a future podiatric function and back at the microphone.

Paul Kesselman, DPM, Woodside NY
