PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
NY Podiatrist Warns Against Zero Drop Shoes or Walking Barefoot

Michael J. Trepal, DPM, a professor of surgery and academic dean at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, warned against wearing zero-drop shoes (in which your heel is not raised, but on the same level as your toes) or running barefoot. “Not only can a bare foot subject the skin on the bottom of the foot to injury, but [it] also supports poor mechanics against a non-deforming ground,” he said.

Dr. Michael Trepal

“Especially in pediatric patients, I would avoid not opening laces and retying them when putting on,” Dr. Trepal said. “The support function of the shoe is lost or greatly reduced in an unlaced or under-laced shoe.” He noted that this is especially true with a flat or low-arch foot type, as those are prone to developing symptoms with inadequate support.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
Podiatrists Reveal Telltale Signs of Plantar Fasciitis

Not sure if you're dealing with plantar fasciitis? There are several telltale signs to look out for: Arch pain: "When someone with plantar fasciitis puts their foot on the ground (from sitting to standing, for example), they will have a lot of pain in the arch. People with higher arches are more prone to this problem than [those with] flatter feet," says New York-based podiatrist Suzanne Levine, DPM.

Drs. Suzanne Levine, Bradley Levitt, and Ashley Lee

Heel pain: "Other causes of heel pain (such as fractures or contusions) will cause significant pain when one applies weight to their foot in the morning, but plantar fasciitis patients tend to see a reduction in their pain as they get moving," Bradley A. Levitt, DPM, a podiatric surgeon, reveals. Inability to walk barefoot: "People with plantar fasciitis find that walking barefoot, especially indoors on hardwood floors, is no longer comfortable. They will also find that non-supportive shoes can increase their pain," says Ashley Lee, DPM, a foot and ankle reconstructive surgeon at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OH Podiatrist and Wife Donate $15,000 to Pave Exercise Trail

Madison Township trustees this week hosted an event to recognize people who played key roles in an improvement project at Bill Stanton Community Park. Trustees formally thanked two residents and some Lake County leaders for providing a large portion of funding to pave the park’s exercise trail.

Dr. Robert Barr

A brief ceremony to dedicate the path was held on May 29. Robert Barr, DPM and his wife Candice donated $15,000 to help pave the exercise trail. Dr. Barr is a podiatrist whose office is in Madison Village, and he and his wife live next door to Stanton Park. “The trail was only packed crushed asphalt at that time, and I could see that it was somewhat difficult for people who were not steady on their lower extremities and had balance issues,” he said.

OIG NEWS
Medicare Remains Vulnerable to Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Related to Off-the-Shelf Orthotic Braces, Which May Result in Improper Payments and Impact the Health of Enrollees

Based on our review of the vulnerabilities identified in OIG’s prior work and our recent analysis of Medicare claims data, we identified issues related to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ oversight of off-the-shelf (OTS) braces. Our analysis of claims data for calendar years 2018 through 2020 showed, among other findings, that Medicare paid for OTS braces that were:

(1) potentially unallowable replacement braces that did not meet reasonable useful lifetime requirements, (2) ordered by providers who did not have treating relationships with enrollees, or (3) marketed to enrollees by telemarketers using prohibited direct solicitation.
