NYCPM Holds Mock Trial for Senior Students
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) organized and held a mock medical malpractice trial for Senior Students during the annual Senior Week. The event, held at Touro's main campus in Manhattan involved two juries, one of Touro Law Students and the other graduating senior podiatry students. Each jury also had lay volunteer participation. NYCPM faculty participating in the Mock Trial were Mike Trepal, DPM, Vice President/Dean, NYCPM as an expert witness for the defense, Kevin Jules, DPM, Chair of Surgery, NYCPM, as an expert witness for the plaintiff and Anthony Jabra, DPM, NYCPM Faculty. Also participating was Neil Kornfeld, JD of NYCPM.

(L-R) Al Mercado, Joan Foley, Dr. Anthony Jabra, Melissa Canaday, Drs. Kevin Jules and Mike Trepal; Neil Kornfeld. |
Participating Touro Law faculty were Al Mercado, JD and Joan Foley, JD. Melissa Canaday acted the part of the patient. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
7 Ways to Set Coders Up for Success
Targeted investments in training, tools, and career growth can transform an overworked coding desk into a denial-busting, revenue-protecting engine. These seven strategies show how to get there.
3. Tighten the coder–clinician feedback loop.
Money is lost when coders and providers operate in silos. Providers and coders must work toward a common goal of complete coding and positive reimbursement results. Weekly huddles, in-note queries, and shared dashboards let coders flag missing elements while the encounter is still fresh.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
The Value of the DPM Degree in the VA
From: Evan F. Meltzer, DPM
In the VA system, our degree is equivalent to an MD or DO degree when it comes to leadership positions. For example, the former Chief of Podiatry at the Albuquerque VA Medical Center is now the Chief of Surgery. This means that she is in charge of all the surgical specialties at this facility, including the oversight of orthopedics. Our degree also qualifies for any other leadership positions in the VA, including the Chief of Staff and the Executive Director.
As I mentioned in my recently published memoir, I believe that the VA model is an excellent example for providing universal healthcare to all Americans, if that ever happens, and our DPM degree in this scenario is enough!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) - PART 1A |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I am very surprised that Dr. DeHeer feels I am merely part of the low enrollment problem and have not exerted any effort toward a solution. He’s wrong. I phoned his office a couple of times and left messages asking him to call but he probably never received those pleas to talk with him, so we had to pursue solutions on our own. He must have been too busy to read the last dozen or so of my postings on PM News regarding the low admissions, how the profession feels, and what to do.
With the encouragement of Dr. Allen Jacobs, we investigated how the profession feels about a degree change which would lead to a plenary license, and with the help of Dr. Barry Block constructed a survey of the profession’s attitude toward the status quo; a three-year residency for everyone who graduates with a...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) - PART 1B |
From: Marlene Reid, DPM
I am shocked, well maybe not, to see the negative comments regarding the new APMA marketing campaign that will serve as both a student recruitment tool and public education about the profession. I know many of us are under the impression that our profession is a dying field and some even feel that APMA bears the full responsibility of turning the profession around. However, as a past chair of the APMA Public Education and Information Committee and my many years of time and commitment to both PR and student recruitment efforts as well as speaking on behalf of the profession in the media and to other professions; I can tell you that this is one of the best things APMA could have produced.
While at the House of Delegates this past March, the marketing firm gave a presentation that blew me away (and I am a critical person). The thought that went into each and every component of this campaign could not have been more complete! I felt tremendous pride in APMA and hope for our profession despite all the issues that surround us. Kudos to APMA!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) - PART 1C |
From: Jon Purdy, DPM
I am a second generation podiatrist. I give back to the profession in a number of ways, such as lecturing and being on the board of the American Association of Podiatric Practice Management. This is a wonderful profession, and subject to forces of adversity, as is any other medical specialty. Podiatry has come a long way and needs to continue changing with the times. I feel it is the new “recruits” that will affect the most change. As with most institutions, the “old guard” is generally resistant.
I remember my father being on a panel of practicing podiatrists presenting the profession to my sophomore podiatry class. At the time, he had a booming practice and loved to give back. One gentleman on the panel was wearing jeans, old dirty tennis shoes, and looked like he slept three hours the night before. Everyone else presented professionally. There was nothing but enthusiasm from all on the panel with the exception of one, and he had nothing but negative...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) - PART 1D |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
Podiatrists like John Steinberg and Patrick DeHeer are our finest. I couldn't have more respect for them - they are truly the medical and surgical foot specialists that we imagined would be our leaders and teachers in the 21st century. They practice in their respective niches at fine teaching hospitals, have attracted the best students, and have trained a generation of podiatrists in their image. We have many examples of men and women of their stature. While we don't need every one of their residents to be leaders and teachers, I wonder how many we need to practice as they do and in particular, do the volume of surgery that they do? Is that the goal, that there be more podiatric surgery in the future than there has been in the past? Or that the surgery be more complex? We certainly want what is done to be done as skillfully as possible.
I'd be interested to hear from them and other residency directors about what types of practices their graduates end up in. Dr. Steinberg presented data from the MGMA puts podiatric foot and ankle surgeons at a median compensation of $361,472. The Foundation for Podiatric Education's new enrollment campaign with its central hub, DiscoverPodiatry.org presents an average figure of $273,000 from ZipRecruiter. These are among the highest average earnings that I've seen and as most podiatrists are employed, are an impressive testament to the value of the work being done for their employers. The brilliant Jon Hultman has shown analysis over the years that compensation per time is lower for surgery than for office practice. Is this no longer true? Has our current training model with its emphasis on surgery lead to higher salaries, or is there more to it?
Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL
