PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Poor Foot Structure Can Lead to Chronic Back Pain: MI Podiatrist

According to Conway McLean, DPM, "The region of the body most commonly generating chronic pain is the low back, with an estimated 2.07 million cases of low back pain annually. If you build a house on a crooked foundation, you will have a crooked house. Consequently, foot and ankle mechanics will affect pelvic alignment, the low back musculature, also potentially stressing spinal alignment."

Dr. Conway McLean

"Many complications result from poor body mechanics, so treatment is important. When combined with its pain-relieving properties, along with the ability to prevent numerous problems that result from years of poor function, a well-fabricated foot orthotic is an excellent treatment option for a variety of biomechanical issues. Obviously placing a specialized support inside your shoe and then simply putting your shoes on is a much easier method of treatment than undergoing an operation, with its potential for complications and side-effects, pain, and downtime. Scarring can result from any surgical procedure, and this may alter joint function as well," says Dr. McLean.

PODIATRIC STAFF AND THE LAW
Ex-Podiatry Office Manager Handed 5-Year Fraud Sentence

An Indianapolis woman has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in federal prison after pleading guilty to healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday. Leslie Smith, 62, also was ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker to spend two years on supervised release after getting out of prison and pay $2,341,655.08 in restitution.

Investigators said Smith engaged in multiple fraud schemes against her employer, relatives, and the government from 2019 to 2022 while employed as an office manager for her stepson’s podiatry practice, Healthy Feet LLC. Without the knowledge or consent of her employer, Smith submitted at least 288 fraudulent claims for reimbursement to Medicaid for oxygen-monitoring devices that were never ordered.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT
IL Podiatrist Warns of Major Shifts Affecting Physician Practices

Healthcare futurist Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD painted a compelling picture of the dramatic changes poised to reshape medical practice during a thought-provoking lecture at the Midwest Economics Forum on May 18th in Chicago. Dr. Hrywnak addressed an audience of healthcare economists, outlining how the increasing influence of health insurance companies and private equity groups is impacting medical practice regulation.

Dr. Sev Hrywnak

Hrywnak  specifically highlighted the concerning decline of independent solo and group practices, emphasizing long-term trends that will affect all medical specialties. “The market is being flooded with Physician Associates and Nurse Practitioners,” Dr. Hrywnak explained, “while corporations are actively acquiring medical practices.” He further emphasized this shift by highlighting a statistic: "In 2012, 78% of physicians were independent and controlled healthcare decision-making. Today, in 2024, that number has plummeted – only 22% of physicians remain independent."

MEDICAL ECONOMICS
Doctors See 6% Boost in Pay in 2023: Doximity

After several years of modest or declining growth, the average pay for doctors jumped 5.9% in 2023, rebounding from a decline of 2.4% in 2022. Most medical specialties experienced positive growth in 2023, with the top 10 seeing annual growth rates exceeding 7%, according to the 2024 Physician Compensation Report from professional medical network Doximity.

However, inflationary pressures continue to impact physicians’ real income. According to the American Medical Association, when adjusted for inflation, Medicare physician payment has dropped 26% since 2001. Doximity's compensation data draw from nearly 150,000 survey responses over five years, including responses from more than 33,000 U.S. physicians in 2023 alone.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Podiatric Care for Diabetic Patients Associated With Reduced Risk of Major Amputation/Death

For diabetic patients undergoing hemodialysis, receiving foot and ankle care from a podiatrist within 3 months of a new diabetic foot ulcer diagnosis was associated with a reduced risk of major amputation and death.

The main exposure of this study was foot and ankle care by a podiatrist, provided during the 3 months leading up to diagnosis of a DFU. 2,736 of the participants received podiatry care, while 12,199 did not. Those receiving care from a podiatrist were more likely to be male, older, and have a greater burden of co-morbidities; 74% of those without podiatry care experienced major amputation and/or death, while these outcomes occurred for 70% of those with podiatry care. Podiatry care was associated with an 11% reduced risk of death or amputation (hazard ratio [HR], 0.89 95% CI, 0.84-0.93) compared to those without this care,

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Advocate for Your Profession and Your Practice

Here are some ways you can, and should, engage in grassroots advocacy for your practice, your patients, and yourself.

9. Don't forget the little guys. Local and state elected officials carry weight with their federal counterparts — and sometimes replace them. Ensure your local and state officials understand how federal legislation affects medical care in their district.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING AND BILLING)
From: Marco A Vargas, DPM

I have been using Beacon Podiatric Billing services for 2 years now and have been extremely happy with their service. They work with several podiatrists and are ethical, meticulous, consistent, and tenacious. They are also very easy to get a hold of and have worked with my staff to improve our processes to code more efficiently, and have even gone back and recovered money from old claims that had previously been written off. I highly recommend them.
