PODIATRIC SURGERY
Total Ankle Replacement by WA Podiatrist Returns Patient to Work

More than 30 years ago, 56-year-old Everett resident Michael Diorio fell from a palm tree while trimming fronds at a San Diego apartment. The three-story fall crushed his left heel and fractured his right ankle. Over the last 20 years, he had seven surgeries on his feet and suffered pain on a regular basis. After his new health insurance provided him access to a Virginia Mason primary care physician, he was referred to Eric Heit, DPM, a board certified podiatrist in the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine department. Following a thorough evaluation, Diorio was told he was a candidate for a relatively new procedure – total ankle arthroplasty, also known as total ankle replacement.

Dr. Eric Heit

Diorio subsequently had the three-hour outpatient surgery on his right ankle at Virginia Mason Hospital and Seattle Medical Center on Dec. 15 of last year and returned to work full time in late March. “I used to limp and regularly experience pain. Now I walk almost as well as I did before my injury and without any discomfort. I’m glad I was a candidate for total ankle replacement and have been very satisfied with the experience and outcome,” he said.

REMEMBERING LEGENDARY PODIATRISTS
Hospital Legacy Wall Honors Memory of VA Podiatrist

The portraits of 21 physicians instrumental in the history of Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital adorn a new Legacy Wall in Richmond’s East End. Among them is a portrait of the late William S. Thornton, DPM. The portraits, done by local muralist Hamilton Glass with help from alumni of ART 180, are installed on a brick wall outside the Bon Secours Sarah Garland Jones Center, just yards away from the hospital. They were unveiled in a ceremony on May 10 by Bon Secours.

Attending the event was Brian Wesley, grandson of Dr. Thornton who is best known for co-founding the Crusade for Voters in 1956 with Dr. William Ferguson Reid, one of the area’s legendary political activists.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Podiatrist Discusses The Lifespan of Orthotics

How long do orthotics last? According to podiatrist Peter Lumb, "It depends on the materials that orthotics are made of and how much you use them. Many years ago, they were made of hard plastic and would probably outlast time. The problem is that people's feet change over time and they would sometimes become uncomfortable.

Peter Lumb

Nowadays, orthotic are made of softer material. They are usually more comfortable and easier to adjust. They usually decay faster, so 5-7 years is not an unreasonable time frame. Orthotics should be checked once a year. Some that are heavily used will require replacement after 3 years; others will last much longer than seven years.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
UK's SCP States Stance on Patients' Recording Consultations

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCP) has published guidelines on patients recording podiatrists during consultations, both covertly and overtly, in an attempt to tackle the tensions between encouraging transparency and protecting the interests of its members and the efficiency and integrity of their consultations. The SCP’s stance is that podiatrists and practices should not exercise any meaningful prohibition of recording if patients request it. They should invite patients to record consultations for personal use.

Examples given of appropriate use include sharing the podiatrist’s recommendations with family members. The rationale is that the information is confidential to the patient and that it is for the patient alone to decide with whom it might be shared. There would be nothing, of course, to prevent a third party from attending the consultation with the patient’s consent.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Staff Roles Practices Should Consider Adding - Part 3

Whether it be clinical, financial, or technical, today’s physician practices have seen many changes. These changes have resulted in adding new roles within the practices as well as expanding roles for some employees already on staff.

3. Director of Quality Assurance- “This position looks at metrics as a connected process that influences other processes and ultimately the patient outcome. An error identified both in downstream or the upstream process leads to early recognition or intervention. This role helps focus the practice. For example, comparing datapoints, such as specific procedures given during a month as compared to another.” John Bender, MD, MBA, FAAFP, CEO and family physician at Miramont Family Medicine, Ft. Collins, CO

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Bill Beaton, DPM

Hats off to all of those who worked so hard to pass the VA provider equity act amendment to the VA Mission Act. Hopefully, this will work toward the eventual passage of the HELLPP Act. Now is the opportunity for all of us to thank via e-mail, all of the congressional members who supported this bill and to e-mail those that you noticed did not support the VA bill for our veterans, and that you are going to communicate their lack of support to your patients and to your colleagues and their patients.

The following links (Senate and House) provide a state-by-state breakdown as to how each congressional member voted and which ones are Democrats or Republicans. Hopefully, in the future, it will make passage of the HELLPP Act easier .
