PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
People Tend to Forget That Skin Cancer Can Occur on Feet: TX Podiatrist

Skin cancer can pop up anywhere, Lena Levine, DPM, a doctor of podiatric medicine at UNT Health Science Center, reminds us. “People think because your feet are not exposed to sun that you’re not susceptible, but you are.”

Dr. Lena Levine

If you notice an abnormal spot that popped up out of nowhere or if it starts itching, cracking, or bleeding, “have someone look at it,” she says. “Bad things like skin cancer can happen on feet, and people tend to forget about that.” Although Levine doesn’t advocate seeing a podiatrist as regularly as an internist, she does stress the need if your feet hurt or you notice changes in them.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OR Podiatrist Inspires Student to Become a Physician

Andre McNary felt that no one believed he had a future. “My childhood was very unstable, and I lacked the proper parenting all children should receive,” the local recipient of multiple distinguished college scholarships says. Two summers ago, he began shadowing Dr. Laura Schweger, a podiatrist at Optima Food and Ankle, in Bend. She introduced McNary to a large array of other surgeons and anesthesiologists. “This has supported my interests in countless ways, but principally due to the fact that Schweger has directly introduced me to operating room experience,” he says.

Dr. Laura Schweger and Andre McNary

Dr. Schweger believes in his career ambitions. “He’s an incredible young man,” she said. “Andre can do whatever he puts his mind to… I think he’d be a fabulous physician.” Schweger said she has allowed other high school students to shadow her, but most only do so for a few hours. “But, Andre wanted to come back the following week and the following week… and it became a routine,” she said, adding that he shadowed her at the clinic and then at the surgery center.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY ASSISTANTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatry Assistant Completes 2-Year Apprenticeship

A former Franklin College student has taken important steps in developing her career after completing a successful apprenticeship. Assistant podiatrist Jess Matthews, 21, of North Thoresby, finished the two-year apprenticeship, with support from her employers The Achilles Centre.
Jess Matthews

She has been based at the Dudley Street centre for over two-and-a-half years and went on the program which helps people become foot health practitioners and podiatry assistants. She said: "I enjoyed learning everything from new, the whole aspect of everything and progressing through it all. I had to create a portfolio of work with 13 sections to become a podiatry assistant. It looked at anatomy, physiology, and so on."

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Superbugs Have the Possiblity of Being Resistant to All Known Forms of Antibiotics

For the first time, researchers have found a person in the United States carrying bacteria resistant to antibiotics of last resort, an alarming development that the top U.S. public health official says could mean “the end of the road” for antibiotics. Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, a publication of the American Society for Microbiology published a report about a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman with a strain of E. coli found in her urine, which was resistant to the antibiotic Colistin .

Colistin is the antibiotic of last resort for the family of bacteria known as CRE, which health officials have dubbed “nightmare bacteria.” In some instances, these superbugs kill up to 50 percent of patients who become infected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called CRE among the country’s most urgent public health threats. The genetic mutation that provides the bacteria with the ability to be resistant to colistin has been identified in plasmids. Since plasmids can replicate and can be transferred from one bacteria to another, it is possible for other types of bacteria to develop resistance to Colistin. This possibility presents some very real and immediate risks to humans.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Basics of Orthotic Manufacture Course?

Years ago, CCPM had a one-week course for docs and/or assistants to refresh/learn the basics of orthotic manufacture. Are there any similar courses available today?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A
RE: The Passing of Arthur Steinhart, DPM

Condolences to Dr. Arthur Steinhart's family. As one of his students, I recall Dr. Steinhart as an excellent teacher, clinician, and model for all of his students and colleagues.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES ) - PART 1B

RE: The Passing of Arthur Steinhart, DPM

I expect that I will be one of many to express my sadness upon learning of the passing of a wonderful teacher and friend.  Dr. Steinhart was one of very few teachers who retained an ability to not only absorb current knowledge and techniques, but to disseminate that knowledge to students in a way that was easily comprehensible.  His calm and jovial manner belied a wealth of technical know-how, and his style of instruction was always positive and supportive.  All NYCPM graduates are grateful for their time with him and are diminished by his loss. Thanks Artie.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Mathew M. John, DPM

I applaud the leaders of ABPM for their excellent response to the AAOS letter. This type of strong response is what we need in our profession to get where we want. Sitting back and just ‘hoping’ that the general public will be well educated about our profession is not enough. There are those orthopedic surgeons who are progressive and work with us as colleagues and do not agree with the AAOS on this matter but the fight is still OUR fight.
