APMWA Announces 39th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 39th Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original (NOT AI generated). Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

PA Podiatrist Joins Geisinger St. Luke’s Wound Care Center
Geisinger St. Luke’s Wound Care Center in Orwigsburg is now open. The Center specializes in treating difficult to heal wounds caused by diabetes, circulatory disorders, pressure-related injuries, trauma, or complex surgery. The Center is staffed by Allison E. Watts, MD, a wound care specialist, and Emily Gombosi, DPM, a podiatrist.

Dr. Gombosi earned her podiatric medical degree at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine and completed a residency at St. Luke’s University Health Network. She is a board qualified foot and ankle surgeon and is actively pursuing full certification.

UK Podiatrist Warns Against Wearing Shoes Without Heels
Podiatrist Marion Yau advised against wearing shoes without heels. "I strongly discourage wearing shoes without a heel. Due to the greater likelihood of injury, a platform lacking a heel would not be advisable or practical. Wearing platform shoes can also lead to a condition in which the foot is held in a permanently downward-pointing position," she said.

"Muscle rigidity, triggered by decreased flexibility, may reduce movement range. This may lead to pain in the ball of the foot, arch pain, and Achilles injuries," said Yau.
