Limit Flip-Flop Use to Beach and Pool: OH Podiatrist

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and it's the season of flip-flops, grilling, and swimming. All of those fun summer activities bring some risk, but it's manageable risk, according to Cleveland Clinic doctors, if you know what to watch for. Do you spend most of the summer flopping around in flip-flops? First, buy flip-flops that fit, so your toes aren't scraping the ground and they need to have some kind of support built into them. And, according to Clinic podiatrist Dr. Joy Rowland, you can't flip-flop your way through the summer.

Dr. Joy Rowland

"Am I dead set against flip-flops? No, (they're) for very limited use though. Wear them to the beach, wear them to the pool, wear them on vacation, but not to walk through big amusement parks for 3 or 4 or 6 hours a day," she said.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky: When research is presented on the international level, how is being an American podiatrist perceived?

Dr. Vickie Driver

Vickie Driver: It often depends on which country. Most want to know how they can improve their training to mimic what we have in the U.S.  Often, when at medical meetings, we are thought as one of “the boys,” and when the thought turns to the role of the podiatrist, they often have to stop and remember that I am also one.

Dr. Robert D. Phillips

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest is Dr. Robert D. Phillips, biomechanic expert. You can register for future events by clicking here

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Keep Your Practice's Personality Consistent

Your practice's brand personality, if it is consistent, will influence everything about your practice: its location; the colors and decor of your office; the ambiance; artwork; in-office music system; magazines; brochures; attire of everyone in the office; the personality of the people you hire; and perhaps most importantly, the day-to-day interactions that you and your staff have with patients. Otherwise, you're sending mixed messages.

RE: Documenting Radiological Findings (Michael G. Warshaw, DPM)
From: Marc Katz, DPM

I think the solution is very simple. Just pick up a report from a radiologist and that's all you need. And yes, you can template some of it. Radiologists use templates daily for views and common findings. An example would be, "No fractures or dislocations were identified."

I make a report as a Dragon template that easily allows me to quickly choose views, locate the interpreting physician, etc. The rest is common sense.

RE: Square.com (Andy Dale, DPM)
From: Shannon Roesch, DPM

I started using the Square device in my office about 3 months ago. It's a great way to enforce timely payments without the high fees of other credit card processors. It comes in handy, especially with those flex benefit cards. The device is free, and it's really easy to use. The funds are posted to your account the next day.

I hesitated for a long time to get a credit card device. But now, I'm really glad I did it. Now, there's never an excuse for patients not to pay their outstanding balances.

RE: Square.com (Andy Dale, DPM)
From: Philbert Kuo, DPM

If you are considering Square.com, then also take a look at Paypal.com. I think it's about 5% less expensive. Do a Google search on mobile credit card readers and read the reviews to get a better understanding of what is available.

RE: Staff Makes it Difficult to Get Appointments
From: Gregory B. Nellis, DPM

I completely see the potential for office sabotage that is being discussed. However, there are two sides or more to a lot of things, and this may be one. Maybe some of your staff are looking at the book, at you, and listening to callers and trying to protect you. How many "black toes" have you rushed in for a little dried blood on a thick hallux nail? We don't know how to say no, or not today. If we were our own receptionists, we would never go home.

The only suggestion I would make is that if questionable in any way, they put the patient on hold, give you their chart or fill you in on the new patient, show you the book, and ask you how to fit them in. That should be a rare instance. Part of a good receptionist's job is to protect you, while availing patients to care as can be done reasonably.

Gregory B. Nellis, DPM, Gloversville, NY, gbndpm@yahoo.com

RE: Staff Makes it Difficult to Get Appointments (Bryan Markinson, DPM)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

Not withstanding Dr. Markinson's practice management expertise, and the efficiencies he achieves by depending heavily on his staff, there are the realities of private practice that most of us still have to face on a day-to-day basis. First, let's go back to reality and the post that started this discussion. "Name withheld" was quite upset to hear what his/her staff was pulling, and had a secret shopper confirm his/her suspicions. Except for Dr. Markinson's off-topic scenario, it is very clear that staff can hurt a doctor's practice if they are not carefully monitored. Things are simple in my office. My staff asks. Novel, huh?
