MIS Bunion Surgery Leaves Nearly Invisible Scarring: TX Podiatrist
There’s nothing like a bulbous bunion or hammetoe to ruin a red carpet or summer sandal look. Austin-based podiatrist Anne Sharkey, DPM has a remedy. “MIS or minimal invision surgery, can correct bunions and hammertoes with nearly invisible scarring thanks to micro incisions that you don’t see after healing,” she says.

The 60-to-90 minute x-ray guided procedure, which involves some discomfort and swelling, is done on an outpatient basis. Patients return to wearing soft-soled shoes such as sneakers in three weeks and high heels within three months.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR - PART 1 |
NY Podiatrist Discusses What to Look for in a Pickleball Shoe
According to podiatrist Bruce Pinker, DPM, there are many considerations for choosing a pickleball shoe. Dr. Pinker says that pickleball shoes should be relatively lightweight, with a firm heel counter, adequate cushioning in the insole, and a supportive midsole for shock absorption. Aside from performance, ensure the shoe fits and provides enough airflow for your feet to breathe.
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
Dr. Pinker tells us that shoes made with mesh are the best for breathability and are also quite common in sports shoes. He says that mesh can allow for air exchange to help lower the temperature of the feet inside the shoes, and decreased temperature can help prevent the occurrence of fungal foot conditions.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR - PART 2 |
IL Podiatrist Discusses How to Choose Shoes for Swollen Feet
The key is to look for wide fits, adjustable details and flexible, breathable materials, says Mohammad Usman, DPM, a Chicago podiatric foot and ankle surgeon and owner of Michigan Avenue Podiatry. It’s also a good idea to get checked out by your doctor if you notice any new or unexpected foot swelling.
Knowing the cause of your swollen feet may help you figure out the best shoes for you. According to Dr. Usman, swelling may be caused by overuse and fatigue, heart failure, and other systemic circulatory conditions, infections (such as cellulitis), diabetic neuropathy, trauma or surgery. If you have swelling, you should make a visit to your podiatrist to determine the cause.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
WHO Updates List of Most Dangerous Drug-Resistant Pathogens
For the first time in seven years, the World Health Organization has updated its list of the most dangerous, antimicrobial resistant pathogens. The revised list includes 24 pathogens from 15 different families of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The revision was prompted by the growth of the problem. There were approximately 4.95 million deaths caused by antibiotic resistance across low- and middle-income countries in 2019 alone, according to the May 17 report.
New this year, is the inclusion of Gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to last-resort antibiotics, which the WHO calls special attention to. In its 2024 update, the WHO removed five pathogens that were listed in 2017, including: penicillin non-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter, clarithromycin-resistant Helicobacter pylori, and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Providencia. There were three new additions to the list: macrolide-resistant Group A Streptococci, penicillin-resistant Group B Streptococci, and rifampicin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Advocate for Your Profession and Your Practice
Here are some ways you can, and should, engage in grassroots advocacy for your practice, your patients, and yourself.
7. Contact your legislators. Send e-mails and letters and call your legislators. Whenever your professional society asks that you contact your legislator, do so. Ask your staff to do so as well. Make your voice heard.
