PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Today's Orthotics are More Comfortable - CA Podiatrist

By affecting the way people stand and move, foot orthotics might change the pattern of forces and stresses throughout the musculoskeletal system. "I get a lot of referrals for hip pain, knee pain, and back pain," says Jeffrey DeSantis, DPM, an Orange County, California, podiatrist and trustee for the American Podiatric Medical Association. "It's usually patients who are overpronators."

Dr. Jeffrey DeSantis

He is happy to re-assure patients that contemporary foot orthotics are softer and more flexible, and thus more comfortable, than those made in decades past. Some patients can get satisfaction with pre-fabricated orthotics, but many are better off with the custom-made variety, he says.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
FL Podiatrist Helps Patients in Need in Guyana

New Port Richey podiatrist Dr. James Stelnicki has practiced podiatry for around 50 years and traveled the world on medical missions. He recently traveled to Guyana and was shocked at the medical need in the South American country. The trip was organized by his son, Dr. Eric Stelnickis, new group called CHARM – Children’s Health and Rehabilitative Mission – though the group isn’t limited to just children. Stelnicki traveled on behalf of Barry University, where he is a board member.

Dr. Edward Stelnicki operating in Guyana

The group was there about a week, and had planned to make it simply a fact-finding mission to evaluate the needs of the area. But plans changed upon their arrival. “Once word got out that we were there, people started coming from all over,” said Stelnicki. “People were walking, people who took buses for two days who came to see us because they were in the back country.” The group ended up seeing more than 100 patients and performed around 35 surgeries. One patient’s foot was so injured that she was unable to stand on it for around three years. The group was able to operate on her foot and put a cage around it so she could walk again.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Podiatrist Presents at International Diabetic Limb Salvage Conference

Kelsey Cook never envisaged her career in podiatry would lead to an opportunity to rub shoulders with health industry leaders from across the world. However, that's exactly what happened after a submitted abstract from her honors work led to her being selected to present at the International Diabetic Conference in Washington, USA, earlier this year.

Kelsey Cook

Kelsey's presentation involved the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease through a podiatric examination. Kelsey used a tool commonly used by general practitioners, the Australian Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Calculator, which gives patients a score for their likelihood of a heart issue such as a stroke or heart attack. The tool looks at risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, age, gender, smoking status, and diabetes status.

ABPM NEWS
ABPM Responds to the AAOS Letter to the Senate

The American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) sent a communication to the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee refuting their misrepresentations of the February 23, 2016 letter by the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). While the APMA is actively working to get the House language re-inserted into the Senate bill, the directors of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine felt it essential to communicate directly with the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee as well.  Click here to read letter.

E-HEALTH NEWS
New Reimbursement Plan May Eliminate Need for Stage 3

Physicians and other eligible professionals under the electronic health records meaningful use program were tasked to make significant investments in EHRs; in large part, they did under Stage 1. Stage 2 imposed tougher steps in EHR capabilities that much of the industry was not ready for, and many providers dropped out of the program. Now, changes to Stage 2 muddy waters; in part, they would ease reporting requirements for eligible professionals but also impose several confusing new requirements in a proposed rule issued in April and authorized by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, known as MACRA.

Robert Tennant, director of health information policy at the Medical Group Management Association, believes Stage 3 is a non-issue. That’s because the new Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) authorized under MACRA incorporates a number of Stage 3 requirements to measure physician performance within the modified Stage 2 rule that has been proposed. Performance measures include electronic prescriptions, enabling patients to view/download/transmit their electronic healthcare data, and secure messaging.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Frequency for Billing CPT 17110

I was under the impression that last year Medicare (Noridian) limited the billing of CPT 17110 to once every 6 months. The reasoning was that if the lesion was destroyed, why would you need to repeat the procedure? We have been billing the first procedure to insurance and if the patient needs to have it repeated, it has been self-pay. I need clarification on this information. Can we bill CPT 17110 more frequently than once in a 6-month period if needed?

Lani Smith, Office Manager, Office of Kash Siepert, DPM, Roseburg, OR

Response: You did the right thing by first going to the LCD for your particular area or MAC - but then you also need to check the NCD as well.

NCD 54602 Removal of Benign Skin Lesions, found on CMS' website covers this code as well - but it also does not have a limitation of "once every six months" that you've asked about. In fact, I do not see anything LCD 33979 in Oregon that limits this to once every six months either.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A
RE: The Passing of Arthur Steinhart, DPM
From: Thomas Delauro, DPM

Dr. Arthur Steinhart

I regret to inform you that our past Chairman, Professor, colleague, and friend Arthur Steinhart, DPM passed away on May 24th. He was an astounding clinician, thinker, and my classmate. He deeply loved the NYCPM, our profession, and most of all the students he so strongly molded. We already miss him.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B
RE: The Passing of Arthur Steinhart, DPM
From: Russell G. Volpe, DPM

This is very sad news indeed. Dr. Steinhart was my teacher and a distinguished Chair of the Medicine Department when I was a student and faculty member. He was always generous with his skills, time, and patience. His love for making sure that podiatric medical students and colleagues were as good as they could possibly be informed everything he did and all that he stood for. And he was always kind and gracious to all. Of course, he had a great love for his family. We had many conversations about his pride in his sons and their many accomplishments. He is indeed missed already.
