FL Podiatrist Reports High Success Rate With Cryotherapy

If anyone knows how to put the freeze on chronic foot pain, it's podiatrist Marc Katz. Just ask Willie Lucas. He's been suffering for the past 17 years. He had surgery on his left foot in 1999 for Morton's neuroma and pain in his heel and ankle. The pain lingered, and today he limps. He often has to rest at work. Lucas found Katz online and decided to try cryosurgery.

Dr. Marc Katz

For people with painful foot conditions, cryosurgery is a virtually painless, minimally invasive procedure for relief. A typical session lasts 30 minutes. Receiving local anesthesia is usually the most "painful" part of the process. A tiny incision is made, and a probe is used to freeze the problem nerves to about minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit. It happens in two three-minute cycles with 30 seconds of thawing in between. The inside of the nerve is destroyed while the outside "insulation" remains intact.

"The nice thing about this procedure is that it accommodates people who can't take time off of work," says Katz, who has been practicing for 18 years. Since August, he has performed about 150 cryosurgeries with a success rate hovering at 80 percent. Patients include athletes, stay-at-home moms, the elderly and diabetics. Cryosurgery typically runs $500 to $1,000, and insurance covers most cases, Katz says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

OH Podiatrist Devotes Time (and Shoes) to Homeless

There aren't a lot of people who would look at foot fungus for free. But Dr. Lisa Nicely isn't a lot of people. On the third Thursday of every month, Nicely takes time off from her private podiatric practice in Kettering to examine feet at the Samaritan Homeless Clinic. She'll see between eight and 12 patients, whose ailments range from heel pain and spurs, to Achilles tendinitis, to bunions, hammertoes, corns, calluses, infections, abscesses and warts.

Dr. Lisa Nicely

"I like to think that I provide a decent service," said Nicely, who has been providing this service to Dayton's homeless for the past eight years. But more than just providing an essential health check for the clinic's visitors, she's helping them get something essential for people constantly on their feet: shoes.

"Shoes are a big problem for the homeless," said Nicely. "They'll wear a lot of hand-me-downs. They'll wear a lot of things that they're given, and they don't fit. And they have a lot of problems because of it. So when they do come in, we do try and get the correctly fitted shoes."

In the eight years that Nicely has worked as the lone foot doctor at the clinic, she's arranged to have an average of 18 pairs of shoes a year given to the homeless. Nicely sees an average of 60 patients a year.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS

RE: Post Arthroscope Abscess (Will Godfrey, DPM)
From: Shannon M. Meredith, DPM

I would suggest checking the patient for Lyme disease. I do not know if it is indigenous to your area of the country or not, but we have seen some interesting cases of "strange" joint aspirate after scopes in the knees up here.

Shannon M. Meredith, DPM, Bridgton, ME,Ocnblu777@aol.com

RE: Orders for Nursing Homes (Tony Poggio, DPM)
From: Robert Laroche, DPM

I appreciate Dr. Poggio's guidance on podiatric issues. He is usually right on target. However, to my knowledge in Texas we need a new order every time we have an encounter wlth a patient.
