INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Aussie Podiatrist Receives Australian Small Business Champion Award
Mount Isa will always hold a special place in the heart of Angela Holland, which is why she was quick to answer the call when the city was in need of a podiatrist. “I was born and bred in Mount Isa and did all of my schooling there,” said Holland, the owner of Advance Foot Clinic, which has five locations across Queensland. “It was in 2009 that somebody reached out to us through the Podiatry Association and they asked us whether we knew of a podiatrist (who might be willing to set up in Mount Isa)."
|
Angela Holland (C) with colleagues |
Holland was speaking after Advance Foot Clinic was named the national winner in the Health Improvement Services category at the 2025 Australian Small Business Champion Awards. The clinic stood out among more than 5,500 small businesses from across the country, with only 1,423 finalists selected across 106 different categories. The winners were announced at a gala event, where Holland proudly accepted the award alongside her team.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) |
From: Patrick A. DeHeer, DPM
As a lifelong fan of the Grateful Dead, one of my favorite lyrics from *Playing in the Band* resonates deeply with me: “Some folks look for answers, Others look for fights, Some folks up in treetops, Just looking for their kites.” I’ve always looked for answers.
I love podiatry. My career in this field exceeded every expectation, and I remain deeply grateful. That gratitude has translated into decades of service to this profession—not out of obligation but out of a belief that we each have a responsibility to leave the profession...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Barbara Hirsch, DPM
I do not think it is necessary to make hospital rounds or work in an OR to make a conclusion, voice an opinion, or make a suggestion on residency programs. Many practitioners are "non-practicing" in some manner. Does that mean they do not understand ways to move forward in our profession?
Dr. Sherman communicates with many podiatrists and has a broad base for understanding our profession. Not every medical student wants to do surgery. Perhaps not every podiatry student does either, and that should be taken into account. I realize Dr. Sherman's letter may not have a factual basis for each point, but he has provided input and suggestions that are valid.
Barbara Hirsch, DPM, Rockville, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: James Hatfield, DPM
At the end of the day, I ask myself if I enjoy what I did in my practice - Yes. Was I as busy as I needed to be? - Yes - I was booked up for 2 months ahead. Did I make a good living? - Yes - equivalent with most of the physicians in the area. Did I need to do better? – No. Did I have good privileges at the local hospital - Yes, full scope available. Did I do my own H&Ps – Yes. Did I get referrals from the local MDs? - Yes, lots. Did the MDs call me "Doctor"? – Yes. Did the patients call me "Doctor”?- Yes.
Anyone who needs more than this has an inferiority complex. Podiatry is consistently rated as one of the highest paying jobs in the U.S: #19th by U.S. News & World Report: Any student who can't be happy considering podiatry as a career is foolish.
James Hatfield, DPM, Encinitas, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (UNLICENSED FOOT SPECIALISTS) - PART 1A |
From: Howard Bonenberger, DPM
The number of recent posts correlate directly with the increased radio spots The Good Feet Store has been running. This proves the point that the ads get noticed, not only by DPMs but by consumers. Many, many years ago, the APMA needed to understand the barrier that consumers perceive when they decide to drop over a thousand dollars on arches versus seeing a podiatrist.
The promotion of the profession has been sorely lacking for years. We run "articles" about the evils of flip-flops, how to select a sneaker, and obscure diseases that most of us will never see in our career. NO ONE comes away from reading those and thinks, "If I had ever had a bad sprain or may have broken something, I'll see the anti-Croc doc." Seriously, get into the modern world of podiatry! The profession needs to spend on a first-rate PR program that is not afraid of its own shadow. But alas, it will never happen. We've had 40 years to do it and have consistently fallen short.
Howard Bonenberger, DPM (retired), Hollis, NH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (UNLICENSED FOOT SPECIALISTS) - PART 1B |
From: William Beaton, DPM, Burton Katzen, DPM
In my opinion, there is no such thing as unlicensed foot specialists, only unlicensed fraudsters.
William Beaton, DPM, St. Petersburg, FL
I graduated in 1971, so I was around at the onset of so-called “Root Therapy; Do you believe in it?” taught by Dr. Harry Hlavac, expounding the theories of Drs. Root, Sgarlato, etc. So, in my 52 years of practice, I have treated thousands of patients with custom orthotics and more recently, the much improved non-custom orthotics. Like most members of our profession, I always assumed custom orthotics would produce a much better result, but unfortunately, in my area, I often had to consider my treatment choice on the patient’s willingness to pay and/or coverage. I also must say that it would ruin my day when a patient would come in and tell me they paid $1,200 for a pair of orthotics from The Good Feet store when I had 2 or 3 patients the same day refuse custom orthotics at half the price.
So the first question is, if our custom orthotics are so much better, why are people getting good results and why are the owners of these companies making millions, and we’re not. The answer is simple. They...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (UNLICENSED FOOT SPECIALISTS) - PART 1C |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Unfortunately, this is a state-by-state issue. Dr. Trantalis is correct that there are innumerable instances of unlicensed individuals selling their "orthotic" wares both on the Internet and in brick-and-mortar stores.
I was recently approached by an international company asking me to assist them with setting up a system by which patients would take their own foot impressions with foam boxes and they would not only return the devices to the patients but bill their insurance company. If their insurance did not cover orthotics, the patients would be set up to self-pay. They were gearing up to do a national program. I turned down their generous offer to design the system and implement it downstream with all sorts of compliance checklists. The problem here is that no prescriber would ever be evaluating...
