FPMB IN THE NEWS
FPMB Holds Board Meeting at the FSMB Annual Meeting

The Federation of Podiatric Medical Boards (FPMB) was invited again to the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) Annual Meeting and House of Delegates. The conference addressed critical issues related to licensing, regulation, and patient protection, with this year’s discussions highlighting the integration of artificial intelligence in various environments.

(L-R) Drs.Judi Manzi, Len La Russa, Marlene Reid, Mark Block; Russ Stoner, Drs. Bruce Saferin, Barbara Campbell, and Jay LeBow.

FPMB and FSMB collaborate to represent and support their respective member state licensing boards, including those held in common via joint boards. This partnership is vital to advancing the podiatric profession. During the conference, FPMB’s Board of Directors met to strategize on initiatives to support the licensing and regulation of podiatric physicians. A key agenda item was the pursuit of an interstate podiatric medical licensure compact. FPMB is in the unique position to identify new licensees in every state across the country.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Advocate for Your Profession and Your Practice

Here are some ways you can, and should, engage in grassroots advocacy for your practice, your patients, and yourself.

6. Educate your legislators. Get to know your legislators. One effective tactic is to invite your legislators to spend time in your clinic. Most do not understand all the red tape in the way between good care and your patients. Have them sit and watch an employee wait on hold on the phone for an hour to get authorization approval. Your legislator may send an aide to your office in their place; this step remains a worthwhile endeavor because having the support of these aides is critical. Become a resource for them.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME)
RE: Medicare MACs Release New Cellular Tissue Product LCD for DFU and VLU
From: Eric J. Lullove, DPM

In case you live in a closet or under a rock, the Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) have released proposed coverage policy updates to their Application of Skin Substitute and Cellular Tissue Products for Diabetic Foot Ulcers and Venous Leg Ulcers on April 24.

This new policy is a welcome change for most of the providers who have been asking for more evidence-based coverage in relation to the numerous products on the market without clinical evidence. The MACs have answered the question: when is this going to happen and how many applications am I...

Editor's note: Dr. Lullove's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A
From: David Alper, DPM

For those of you that did not have the good fortune to know Dr. Jack George, he was more than just a past-president (1992) - he was a true force to be reckoned with, both within the House of Delegates and out in the medical community. His presence in the HOD was at the level of Drs. Kanat and Kaplan - when he spoke, the room got quiet and people listened as he helped drive our profession forward.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Jack committed himself to elevating and protecting the profession of podiatry, first in Massachusetts, and later on a national level. He was instrumental, through advocacy and legal action, in breaking through prejudice by organized medicine, ultimately convincing key hospitals in Worcester, MA to allow, for the first time, podiatrists to perform surgery on site, and qualified podiatrists to be included in Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Medicaid. He helped Lloyd Smith and me successfully sue our hospitals for privileges after his success in Worcester.

And he was a "King Maker" - Lloyd Smith, Mike King, myself and others became deeply involved in our state society and APMA because of being chosen and guided by Jack. He firmly believed in the need to ensure that leadership was in place. He was a dear friend to podiatry - and to me. I will miss his wisdom, his passion - and his presence in my life.

David Alper, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B
From: Gerald Peterson, DPM, Harold Glickman, DPM, Steven J Berlin, DPM

Many hours were spent together during the annual House of Delegates over the years discussing the business of the House and getting his perspective on the issues. His wisdom and insight was always invaluable to me, let alone his friendship. You will be missed my friend. RIP

Gerald Peterson, DPM

I can’t think of a more iconic figure on the Board of Trustees than Jack George. He had the leadership skills to transcend podiatric generations. Along with Arthur Helfand, DPM, Jack had a profound effect on my career as a podiatric physician.

Harold Glickman, DPM, Past President, APMA

I will miss Jack George. He was a fun guy to be with and he was a wonderful asset to our great profession. My condolences go out to Jack and his family.

Steven J Berlin, DPM
