PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC |
Foot Health Issues Rise from Neglect During Pandemic: AZ Podiatrist
One of the most important things we can do is focus on the health of our feet. While we often think about heart health and teeth care, a Banner Health doctor says people have been neglecting their foot health during this pandemic. Travis Jensen, DPM, a podiatrist, has seen an increase in patients who have foot-related medical issues.
|
Dr. Travis Jensen |
“There’s no doubt there has been a lot of people who have prolonged foot care, whether it be diabetic wounds or ingrown toenails,” says Dr. Jensen. He says he has been noticing an uptick in all age groups coming to see him for some type of treatment directly related to having delayed care.

Seniors Should Tread Carefully With Ankle and Foot Injuries: OH Podiatrist
“Foot pain is never normal,” said Ashtabula County Medical Center podiatrist, Michelle Dunbar, DPM. “The longer diagnosis and treatment are delayed, the more susceptible a person is for future injuries. We might shake off a mild ankle or foot injury by icing it or resting for a few days,” she said. “If the ankle or foot is stiff in the morning or stiffens after you’ve been sitting a while, it could indicate a soft tissue injury. A constant pain as you walk or move could indicate injury to the bone.”
|
Dr. Michelle Dunbar |
If your ankle or foot is injured, a podiatrist may diagnose the injury with tests such as x-rays, MRIs, or an ultrasound. Treatment options range from pain medication and physical therapy to surgical repair.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Digital Front Doors Improve Patient Health, Remove Barriers to Physicians
While the term front door to some means only a physical door—digital in this case—that is missing a much larger opportunity. Some digital front doors enable a more comprehensive solution. Combining the right technology, people and process allows for whole-person care to be delivered. For example, digital front door solutions that create readmission programs, health risk assessment/Gap closure programs, integrated after-hours telehealth solutions, and seamless connections between payers and providers are all ways that digital front doors can provide a more complete solution.
Some benefits include:
5. Patient re-engagement
Over the last few years, as people might have found it difficult to find the medical care they needed, many have put it off altogether, frustrated at the numerous systematic roadblocks. This is especially concerning for those who have chronic conditions. A digital front door is a perfect platform—and opportunity—to re-engage patients and get them back on track with preventative and continuing care.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Valuation of Practice Active Patient List
After a sincere effort to sell my well-established and community-based practice, I am instead considering closing my practice and selling my active patient list. I hear of practices selling their "patient list" but I can find no references or recommendations on how this might be accomplished. I have recently learned how difficult it is to come to any fair agreement of a practice value. Any help or insight into the valuation of an active patient list would be appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
Hyperuricemia is associated with increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, renal disease, obesity, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, CAD. I would ask if those advocating that a podiatrist manage hyperuricemia also take responsibility for the evaluation of patients for these common co-morbidities. Hyperuricemia may be caused by myeloproliferative disorders, renal disease, psoriasis, medications to treat hypertension. Again, I would ask those who state that a podiatrist manage hyperuricemia if they evaluate patients for the ETIOLOGY of the hyperuricemia. Why accept responsibility for the practice of internal medicine or rheumatology? Do you manage weight loss in hyperuricemia patients? Change in blood pressure medications? Alterations in diet? Manage the patient’s renal disease affected by or causing the elevated uric acid?
I remain the strongest advocate of our profession as there is. However, the management of hyperuricemia is more than prescribing urate-lowering therapy. Making the diagnosis and then an appropriate referral is A+. As Sir William Osler noted over 100 years ago, a good doctor treats the disease. A great doctor treats the patient who has the disease. More to the point, to quote Clint Eastwood, “a man needs to know his limitations.“

Without the passage of Section 502 of the Mission Act, introduced by The Honorable Congressman Brad Wenstrup, DPM and the unwavering efforts of APMA and specifically Mr. Benjamin Wallner, Dr. Owens' remarkable accomplishment would not have been possible. This is the value of belonging to and supporting APMA.
