PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
CT Podiatrist Discusses Preparing for a Marathon

According to Robert Weiss, DPM, "The most important thing in preparing for a half or full marathon is to evaluate the weather conditions, especially if it is hot and humid. It is a necessity to be well hydrated going to the starting line, as it is too late when you get thirsty. Then dehydration is likely to set in and it can be a dangerous enemy."

Dr. Robert Weiss

"The mental aspects of racing are especially important. Runners need to develop mental toughness to succeed in competition. Each runner who has ever stepped on a starting line feels the anxiety and experiences the emotions of competition," says Dr. Weiss.

MO Podiatrist Discusses Shopping for Orthotic Insoles

According to Kyle Fiala, DPM, a foot and ankle specialist at the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, the most common causes of ball-of-foot pain are high-impact exercises that put pressure on the forefront of your foot, too tight or improperly fitting shoes, or foot ailments like bunions or hammertoes. And, when shopping for orthotic insoles that specifically help pain in the ball of your foot, Dr. Fiala recommends looking for an insole product with metatarsal padding built into the product.

Dr. Kyle Fiala

"Orthotics with metatarsal padding are the best for helping ease pain in the balls of your feet. That means the orthotics provide extra padding and support along the balls of your feet," he told Bustle.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
Schizophrenic Aussie Podiatrist Gets 10 Years for Murder of Wife and Dog

Believing that his wife was a demon that he had to banish, a podiatrist with schizophrenia who went off medication listened to the repeated and insistent voices in his head to kill her, a court heard. Paul Leslie Quirk, now 49, repeatedly hit his wife Christina Khoo Gek Hwa, 43, on the head with a pair of kali sticks and a hanger until she collapsed, then stabbed her neck with a kitchen knife until he was satisfied that she was dead in January last year. He then stabbed the family poodle multiple times before throwing it off the balcony. At the High Court on Monday, Quirk was jailed for 10 years after he pleaded guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder for causing Khoo's death and mischief for killing the poodle.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS
FDA Warns of Potential Polyethylene Fracture with STAR Total Ankle Device

According to an FDA safety communication, all Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement devices – known as the STAR Ankle from Stryker – had a higher-than-expected risk of polyethylene component fracture. The FDA release noted surgeons should closely monitor patients with the STAR Ankle for potential fractures of the polyethylene component of the device and consider performing x-rays to evaluate device integrity if polyethylene component fracture is suspected.

Despite the risk of polyethylene component fracture, the FDA noted the STAR Ankle may be appropriate for certain patient populations, including older patients with lower activity levels. Patients with more active lifestyles, OA, or who are younger than 55 years old may have a higher-than-expected risk of polyethylene component fracture, according to the release.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
What Practices Must do to Assure Payment for Telehealth in 2021 - Part 3

The flourishing of telehealth in 2020 was driven not just by necessity, but also by a significant loosening of governmental regulations and reimbursement requirements by payors. To ensure that you will continue to be paid for your telehealth services, here are three best practices you should be aware of:

3. Update and clarify your practice’s financial policy regarding collection of co-pays for telehealth services.

To provide much-needed care during the pandemic, policies regarding collection of co-pays became very lax in many healthcare practices. Now is the time to remedy that. A clearly stated practice of collecting patient payments before service, just as would be done if the patient came into the office, should be in place and practices should not hesitate to reschedule appointments if payments aren’t made. A procedure to maintain a credit card on file simplifies timely payments. Make sure patients receive a copy of your policies so they know what and how much to expect to pay. When patients are unclear as to the amount owed, they tend to put off paying their healthcare bills.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Randall Brower, DPM

The APMA should be ashamed of itself. In this flip-flop article, it reads, "It (FitFlops) also holds the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, a title given to “products found to promote good foot health.” Here I am again twice in one week responding to PM News posts about podiatrists promoting biomechanically unsound shoe wear to the public. When are we going to be the advocate for biomechanically sound footwear. This is one of many reasons why I refuse to pay money to the APMA. Someone, anyone, tell me how flip-flops promote good foot health? We are better than this. Or have we all sold out to marketing money?
