Avoiding Barefoot Activities Prevents Common Foot Ailments: MI Podiatrist
“During the summer months, I see an increase in puncture wounds from running barefoot, sunburns from lack of protection, and ankle sprains from sports,” said Michael Ambroziak, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. “Paying attention to symptoms and behavior, practicing proper at-home care, and bringing children to see a foot and ankle surgeon can ensure proper treatment and get them back to activities quicker.”
|
Dr. Michael Ambroziak |
Proper footwear is essential to prevent injuries. Flip-flops are a key way to prevent puncture wounds from unsuspected sticks and glass hidden in grass or on the beach. And shower shoes or flip-flops can also help to prevent plantar warts, which are caused by direct contact with a virus, when children are walking on pool decks and in locker room showers.

PODIATRIC SURGERY |
NY Podiatrist Performs State's First-ever Custom Ankle Replacement
Recently, podiatric surgeon Vito J. Rizzo, DPM performed the state’s first-ever successful custom total (talus) ankle replacement. His patient, a 51-year old man, was living with constant pain in his ankle after a severe fracture from a skydiving accident. The injury rendered the bone tissue necrotic due to insufficient blood supply – a process called avascular necrosis.
|
Dr. Vito Rizzo |
The patient was told that he needed a fusion of the ankle joint, but after an extensive work-up by Dr. Rizzo was found to be a suitable candidate for this procedure. “Until recently, I would have agreed with those physicians who recommended a fusion. Fusion, if successful, would most likely have alleviated the patient’s pain. But, fusion would have rendered him with a marked disability. The thought is that with this implant, the hope for a functional joint still exists," said Rizzo.

NY Podiatrist Receives Healthcare Hero Award
On May 17, Westchester Magazine celebrated their 5th Annual Westchester’s Healthcare Heroes at a lavish sit-down luncheon at Mulino's at Lake Isle in Eastchester, NY. The event brought together men and women who have dedicated their lives to their patients by going above and beyond the call of duty. This year's 10 incredible, hardworking healthcare professionals may not wear capes, but they are heroes nonetheless.

IN THE COURTS |
DOJ 'Vindictiveness' May Explain FCA Bid: KY Podiatry Chain
The U.S. Department of Justice’s bid to join a False Claims Act (FCA) suit alleging Medicare fraud against a podiatry chain may be “motivated by vindictiveness," the chain told a Kentucky federal court Wednesday, citing its successful challenge recently to the DOJ's investigative powers. Lexington Foot & Ankle Center PSC, which is facing an FCA suit brought by two former employees, made the assertion in a court filing that opposed the DOJ’s recent request to intervene in the case. The DOJ, citing new evidence, made its request on May 8, three months after notifying the court that it would not be joining the case.
The DOJ’s about-face came two weeks after Lexington Foot & Ankle challenged the government’s issuance of so-called civil investigative demands for documents and testimony after declining to intervene. Lexington Foot & Ankle called the post-declination demands improper, and the DOJ quickly rescinded them.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Staff Roles Practices Should Consider Adding - Part 1
Whether it be clinical, financial, or technical, today’s physician practices have seen many changes. These changes have resulted in adding new roles within the practices as well as expanding roles for some employees already on staff.
1. Call Center Staff - “We recognized that some people are good with face-to-face interaction with patients while others are better interacting with patients over the telephone. We began utilizing a call center, which we share with other practices. The center handles both inbound and outbound calls. Employees have templated scripts to assist them. By handling appointment scheduling and outbound appointment reminders, you free up the front office to interact with patients who have arrived for their appointment.” - Carl Olden, MD, FAAFP, founder and senior family physician at Pacific Crest Family Medicine, Yakima, WA

RE: Podiatrists Now Defined as Physicians in VA
From: Jeffrey M. Robbins, DPM
Podiatrists in the VA will now be defined as physicians and surgeons in the Department of Veterans Affairs. This has been a 12-year journey, beginning with initiatives from the Office of the Director of Podiatry Services VACO and the Federal Services Podiatric Medical Association, and ultimately the American Podiatric Medical Association. The APMA did the heavy lifting on the legislative side. Introduced by Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R-Oh) and shepherded by Ben Wallner, Director of Legislative Affairs of APMA, the bill took two years to get through Congress once it was introduced.
As with all major efforts, no one does this alone. We offer our thanks to the rank and file podiatrists for their contributions to APMAPAC and the individuals who contacted their representative to encourage support of the bill. This will allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to recruit and retain our most experienced providers and provide America’s veterans with the best in podiatric medical and surgical care.
Jeffrey M. Robbins, DPM, Director Podiatry Services, VACO
