PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Discusses Risks of Pedicures

You may have a little more trouble relaxing into that massage chair with a magazine after this one -- an unsanitary pedicure could lead to a viral infection (such as warts), bacterial infections from ingrown toenails and aggressive filing, or a fungal infection of the skin and nails, among other serious health problems, says Dr. Jackie Sutera, a New York City podiatrist. Since some salons have better sanitizing practices than others, she recommends that you always bring your own tools, including cuticle nippers, toe clippers, a nail file, nail clippers and, most importantly, a foot file. "That's one of the dirtiest things in that whole salon," she says. "There's a misconception that because they put it in a blue solution or because they put it in a thing that looks like a toaster oven, it's clean -- but it might not be."

Dr. Jacqueline Sutera

Sutera recommends hitting the spa earlier in the day, when things tend to be a bit cleaner and sanitary -- before dozens of feet have soaked in the same bath on the same day and before technicians have a possibility of getting tired. Also, don't give into the temptation to soak your feet too long. "It's a cesspool in there," Sutera says of the foot bath. "Don't sit there and soak in that water forever."

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT
AZ Podiatrist Awarded 2 of 3 Prizes at 7th International Diabetes Symposium

The Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) and its Interdisciplinary Consortium for Advanced Motion Performance (iCAMP) were awarded two of the top three awards at the 7th International Symposium for the Diabetic Foot in The Hague, Netherlands. The first place award focused on some 500 million diabetes hospital admissions and 2 million outpatient diabetic foot admissions between 2006 and 2010 in the USA. The second study, winning third prize, evaluated the potential of virtual-reality-based "exergaming" to reduce fall risk in older people with diabetes.
Dr. David Armstrong

The two award winners were among hundreds of oral and poster abstracts submitted from more than 100 nations in this symposium, held every four years. Both winning abstracts included Dr. David G. Armstrong.
1. First Prize: Skrepnek G, Mills JL, Armstrong DG; "Sole Searching:What happens when nearly 2 million people with diabetic foot ulcers walk into outpatient clinics?"
2. Third Prize: Grewal G, Schwenk M, Lee Eng J, Menzies R, Talal TK, Armstrong DG, Najafi B., "Wearable Sensor-Based Exergaming in patients with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy."

IN THE COURTS
IL Podiatrist is Top Executive in Medical Cannabis Farm

Progressive Treatment Solutions still lacks a license to do business in East St. Louis. Nonetheless, work inside the former U.S. Cellular data center north of downtown is moving at full-tilt to get the site ready for its first crop of medical cannabis. How long these crews can continue their work for Progressive, though, will depend on the outcome of a lawsuit filed in Lake County, located in suburban Chicago, late last week. Kayvan Khalatbari, an entrepreneur who started a Denver pizza chain called Sexy Pizza, denied in an email to the News-Democrat that he violated any Illinois rules.

Khalatbari referred specific questions to Dr. Christine Heck, Progressive’s top executive. Heck, a doctor of podiatry near Chicago, did not return calls seeking comment. “I don't have the authority or position to speak about PTS and their operations,” Khalatbari wrote. “I am simply an advising consultant that has given them the tools they need to make their own decisions and implement their own plan. As a consultant with zero authority to make decisions or speak to the media on their behalf, I must defer to them on this request.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Tips to Collect More from Patients - Part 6

6. Work With a Reputable Agency

Make sure you work with a collections agency that lets you approve whether you want a patient to be sued. Always use an agency that is licensed and has a reputation for acting lawfully and professionally. Don't forget that a signed Business Associate Agreement is needed with any agency you choose. - Ericka L. Adler, attorney

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Peter Caldwell, DPM, Don Ashburn, PhD

This looks like arsenical keratoses, childhood exposure to arsenic; possibly from well water. This often involves the palms as well. Unfortunately, there is no cure. The treatment is palliative with prn debridement.

Peter Caldwell, DPM, Cedar Rapids, IA

This patient certainly needs and deserves some definitive relief. As long as the etiology of the lesions is determined to be benign, the apparent hyperkeratinized nature of the lesions is amenable to treatment with the TransDermSolutions Treatment System. TDS topical solutions specifically target and soften hyperkeratinized tissue, while preserving surrounding normal tissue - this allows large areas to be treated without debilitating the patient. The softened tissue can be readily removed with a curette just 24 hours following application of the TDS solutions  - and with much longer periods of continued post-treatment resolution than other existing treatment modalities.

Don Ashburn, PhD, COO, TransDermSolutions

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Dentists, Podiatrists, and Diabetic Screening (Robert Creighton, DPM)
From: Arthur Helfand, DPM

Many years ago, the U.S. Public Health Service had a diabetes program as a part of their chronic disease effort. The director of that program was Glen W. McDonald. I did work with him, and we did an early study to assess non-diabetic patients presenting to a podiatry hospital clinic and had a high percentage of potential diabetics seen. We had expected that, because of the foot complications related to diabetics. The results were published at that time in the JAPMA (June 1974) and Medical World News (September 1964). The title was "Hunting Diabetics by Foot."

There is so much that the profession has done and published that has been forgotten.
