AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1 |
ACFAP President Gives Barry Alumni Commencement Address
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro gives the Alumni Commencement Address. |
Dr. Louis J. DeCaro, President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) and Barry Class of 1999 alumnus, recently gave the Alumni Commencement address to Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. DeCaro stressed three key themes for becoming a successful podiatric physician. 1) Never listening to the naysayers, 2) how passion breeds success, and 3) the importance of empathy when dealing with patients. DeCaro also told the story of his own journey into the field of podiatric medicine, and how and why he has specialized in podopediatrics.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Women are Pressured to Wear High Heels: IL Podiatrist
Last week, a group of women showed up at the Cannes Film Festival in France and were turned away. The reason? They weren't wearing high heels. One woman's partial foot amputation prevented her from following the black tie dress code. Heels, as many wearers know, present a physical problem. They can harm your feet and your spine and your general ability to stay upright. But they're still nearly institutionalized in white-collar workplaces and Hollywood parties.
|
Dr. Marlene Reid |
Dr. Marlene Reid, a podiatric surgeon in Chicago and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, said her patients who regularly wear heels often push through discomfort for months, coming to her with torn ligaments and stress fractures. "My male patients come in as soon as they have pain," Reid said. "My female patients ignore pain and just deal with it. They feel pressured to look feminine and want to wear heels everywhere - not just the workplace."

OUTSIDE INTERESTS |
WV Podiatrist is Part of Musical Group at ChocolateFest
Chocolate — in all its creamy, rich glory — may be the focal point of this weekend’s ChocolateFest, running Friday through Monday in Burlington, WI. But the festival’s musical entertainment just might give the coveted confection a run for its money when it comes to drawing fans to the festival grounds.
|
MadFact |
Among the acts is a group of hometown musicians who are coming together for a rare appearance. They call themselves MadFact. At the core of this classic rock band is a trio of siblings from the Anderson family, originally of Honey Creek, just outside of Burlington. Twin brothers Dr. Michael Anderson (drums and vocals) and Dr. David Anderson (guitar and vocals) are joined by their sister, Micki Gebel, as lead vocalist. Now in their 40s and 50s, with careers in the medical and education fields, Michael is a chiropractor in Burlington; David is a podiatrist in West Virginia.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: How do you evaluate the role of equinus when you’re making surgical decisions.
|
Dr. Luke Cicchinelli |
Luke Cicchinelli: In the case of flatfoot surgery, I have the patient stand with one foot in front of the other. This places the back foot plantarflexed. Then do the Hubscher maneuver. Then switch the legs and the front foot is relatively plantarflexed. It is surprising how often this alone seems to “cure” the flat foot condition.
Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). [See story above.] You can register for future events by clicking here

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Tips to Collect More from Patients - Part 5
5. Make Rules Regarding When to Send to Collections
Set up clear rules regarding your financial policies and decide at what point to intervene with a patient balance, including the limit to be sent to collections (this could be a total balance or a length of time of non-payment). Rebecca Fox, MD

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practice Form
I was wondering how often an office needs to update a patient's HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practice Form. And when updating, can you utilize the patient's previous policy, edit and date it, or does a new one need to be signed? Patients always get so upset about doing paperwork, so I am trying to streamline this.
Cynthia Ferrelli, DPM, Buffalo, NY
Editor's note: PM News does not provide legal advice. The HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practice Form must be given to all new patients. Unless you change your privacy policy, it does not have to be updated. If you have a website, you must post your Notice of Privacy Practice Form in an obvious location.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Dentists, Podiatrists, and Diabetic Screening
From: Robert Creighton, DPM
There was an interesting presentation at the recent American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist's 24th Annual Scientific and Clinical Conference. During this conference, findings were presented from a prospective study of 500 consecutive patients who completed a 14-question diabetes risk survey in their dentist's office. The dental patients also agreed to have a finger stick blood draw to measure HbA1c levels. None of the patients had a prior diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes, and the screening revealed that 19.2% were pre-diabetic and 1.2% had diabetes.
The rationale for the dental office as a screening site is based on...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Barry Mullen, DPM
Longevity history suggests a benign process, such as hereditary keratoderma palmaris et plantaris (despite the lack of family history). However, differential diagnoses include icythosis (associated with thyroid, cancer, HIV), Kaposi's sarcoma (duration since childhood likely rules this out), arsenical keratosis, psoriasis, pitted keratolysis (cornea bacterium), Vit A deficiency, and verrucas carcinoma. Assuming no systemic involvement, then periodic debridement, topical keratolytics, and soft accommodative insoles are indicated. BUT, play it safe and take 2 punch biopsies from central portions of the skin lesions and different sites to rule out the bad stuff.
Barry Mullen, DPM, Hackettstown, NJ
