NYCPM Celebrates its 113th Graduation
On May 20th, NYCPM celebrated its 113th commencement at Lincoln Center, granting diplomas to 83 podiatric graduates. Receiving honorary degrees were Allen Mark Jacobs, DPM... an esteemed author, researcher, and podiatric surgeon. Dr. Jacobs has served as the Director of Podiatric Surgical Residency Training for over 25 years in various hospitals in St. Louis, MO. Also receiving an honorary degree as well as the College’s keynote speaker, was Mitchell Katz, MD.

(L-R) Drs. Allen Jacobs,, Michael Trepal, and Mitchell Katz |
Dr. Katz is the President and Chief Executive Office for New York City’s Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC). HHC comprises more than 40,000 healthcare professionals who work in New York City’s 11 hospitals, five skilled nursing facilities, and numerous community health centers. FL Podiatrist Explains Why Foot Care Should Be Top of Mind for Diabetics
In her work as a podiatrist, Jessy Pierre-Louis, DPM frequently sees patients dealing with diabetes. One of the effects diabetes can have on the body is damage to the blood vessels of the feet, which can cause a number of additional problems. “If you don’t have blood flow to your foot and you cut your foot, what happens? No blood, no healing. If your skin is so thin that it’s drying, and a dry spot changes to a wound, and it doesn’t have blood flow, no healing,” explains Dr. Pierre-Louis.
|
Dr. Jessy Pierre-Louis |
In addition to blood vessel damage, diabetes can also damage the nerves in the feet, leading to neuropathy. “Diabetes with neuropathy means your sugar became so high that your nerves are now compromised, and now, you don’t have feeling in your foot,” she says. These issues with nerves and blood flow can cause small problems to snowball into much larger ones, often without the patient even realizing it. “At the end of the day, these very simple things can end up leading to amputation, limb loss, or death,” she cautions.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
MN Podiatrist Discusses How to Determine Your Arch Type
According to Stephanie Kvas, DPM, "Choosing athletic shoes for specific sports activities can improve comfort and performance. They also can prevent injuries. One thing to know before you buy is what type of foot arch you have. If you’re unsure about your foot arch type, dip your foot in water, step on a piece of cardboard, and examine the print that remains. If the middle part of your arch is about half-filled, this means you have a neutral arch. Your arch naturally supports your body weight and pronates, or rolls in, under a normal load. Look for shoes with firm midsoles, straight to semi-curved lasts — the shape of the sole and the footprint the shoe is built around — and moderate rearfoot stability."
|
Dr. Stephanie Kvas |
"If your footprint looks like a complete foot, then you have a flat arch. Your arch probably collapses when you walk or run. Your low arches may contribute to muscle stress and joint problems. You may benefit from a walking shoe with a straight last and motion control to help stabilize your feet. If you see little of your footprint, you likely have a high arch. High arches may cause excessive strain on joints and muscles. Your feet may not absorb shock well, especially if you perform high-impact or jumping activities. Look for shoes with cushioning to compensate for the lack of natural shock absorption and a curved last," says Dr. Kvas.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Advocate for Your Profession and Your Practice
Here are some ways you can, and should, engage in grassroots advocacy for your practice, your patients, and yourself.
5. Vote. Yes, vote. Studies show that medical professionals are much less likely to be registered voters or vote than any other professional class. Politicians know this well. And while we are on this topic, if we had a nickel for every physician who tried to get out of jury duty and a dime for every physician who griped about uneducated juries, we would have retired a decade ago. When you're called for jury duty, serve. Period.

OBITUARIES |
RE: The Passing of John Eblem George, DPM
It is with equal measures of sadness for our loss and gratefulness for his life that we announce the passing of Dr. John E. George, DPM, our husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, colleague, friend, and a remarkable pioneer in podiatric medicine and surgery. Dr. George passed away peacefully at the Rose Monahan hospice home in Worcester on May 21, 2024.
|
Dr. John George |
Dr. George graduated from the Ohio School of Podiatric Medicine in 1964. After completing his residency in podiatric surgery in Dallas, the couple returned home to Worcester where Dr. George had a successful podiatry practice for 52 years. In 1973, Dr. George was elected president of the Massachusetts Podiatric Medical Society.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of John Eblem George, DPM
Jack was an iconic figure in the evolution of Massachusetts podiatry. He helped redefine the profession in so many ways. He never faltered. He was a mentor and friend to many of us as we navigated the obstacles of organized medicine and its threats to our livelihoods.
Jack and I shared so many experiences and talked so many times. He went on to become the APMA President and motivated many of us to follow. My condolences to his wife, Joyce, his family and his many friends. RIP.
Lloyd Smith, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING AND BILLING) - PART 1A |
From: Donald R Blum, DPM, JD
I recommend using CPT 28118 - ostectomy, calcaneus (ostectomy being the surgical removal of bone) with CD-10 code M89.37 for Hypertrophy of bone, ankle and foot, For resection of Heel Spur I recommend CPT 28119 - ostectomy, calcaneus; for spur (with or without plantar fascial release) with ICD-10 M77.32 (this is for left foot and M77.31 for right foot).
I use 28120 resection of bone "tarsal bossing" with ICD-10 code M89.37 Hypertrophy of bone, ankle and foot for the dorsal "bump" of bone usually located at the met cuneiform joint.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING AND BILLING) - PART 1B |
From: Keith Gurnick, DPM
The late great Harry Goldsmith, DPM, founder of Codingline discussed this issue as follows:
A Haglund's deformity is a prominence of bone located at the posterior-superior aspect of the calcaneus. It may be associated with "prominence of a bursal projection" (retrocalcaneal bursitis), posterior calcaneal spur, and/or Achilles tendinitis. The proper CPT code for correcting a Haglund's deformity depends on what specifically was performed, what was independent, and what was a component.
Excision of a Haglund's deformity may be coded either as CPT 28118 - ostectomy, calcaneus (ostectomy being the surgical removal of bone) - RVU 13.99 facility or...
