ACFAS NEWS
FL Podiatrist Receives the 2021 Christine Grossman Award

The 2021 Christine Grossman Award was presented to Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS this week at ACFAS 2021 in Las Vegas. Each year, ACFAS honors the spouse of a Past ACFAS President recognizing their steadfast commitment and support of their significant other while they serve on the ACFAS Board. The award, presented by Jordan Grossman, DPM, FACFAS, is named for his late wife Christine who served as a perfect model for this honor as a tremendous source of support throughout Dr. Grossman’s career and tenure as president of the College, while she balanced her own career and their family.

Drs. Jordan Grossman and Amber Shane

As this year’s recipient, Dr. Shane exemplifies the true meaning behind the recognition with her own personal dedication to the College as she gracefully balanced her own career as a foot and ankle surgeon while being the support system and rock for her two children and husband, past ACFAS President Christopher Reeves, DPM, MS, FACFAS.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
NY Podiatrist Spearheads Clothing Drive for Nursing Home Residents

Boy Scouts of America Troop 53 held a clothing drive for nursing home residents in New York City on May 17. Jessica Hansen, a Unit Commissioner within the Boy Scouts of America, brought the plight of nursing homes in the Bronx to the attention of BSA Troop 53 after learning of the work of Sam Carr, DPM. Dr. Carr, a Fair Lawn resident and podiatrist working in New York City, had been collecting clothing donations for needy Bronx nursing home residents for several years. However, the pandemic had led to an increase in demand for clothing donations.

Dr. Sam Carr

In an effort to meet the growing needs of these nursing homes, Troop 53 partnered with Dr. Carr and put out a call for clothing donations among the scouting community. Troop 53 was able to gather approximately 20 bags of lightly used clothing for the Bronx nursing home residents.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
CA Podiatrist Explains How to Assess Sole Stiffness

According to podiatrist, Najwa Javed, DPM, founder of E’MAR Italy, a line of comfortable high heels, if you are looking for a stylish slip-on sneaker that has good support, you should “make sure the sole is stiff, which will help with keeping the arch of the foot stable and not allow for added heel and foot pressure.”

Dr. Najwa Javed

How can you assess the stiffness of your soles? “Hold the shoe and make sure it does not bend or twist easily, which would cause the lower leg tendons to overwork and strain,” says Dr. Javed. Her other advice: “Look for a shoe with a heel counter [a small plastic insert located along the back seam of the shoe] that is stiff so that it can support your ankle, prevent you from slipping out of the shoe, and keep your toes from gripping too hard, causing corns.”

IN THE COURTS
OH Man Gets $2.75 Million After Foot Surgery Leads to Leg Amputation

The federal government will pay an Ohio man $2.75 million for a botched surgery at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System that led to the amputation of his leg. Darwin Gurto, 58, of Pierpont, Ohio, initially was seen at the VA’s Podiatry Clinic in February 2015 for pain in his left ankle, which was causing instability and difficulty walking, according to the federal lawsuit he filed.

About 10 days later, he underwent a left ankle and mid-foot fusion by Dr. Rick Scanlan, a podiatrist. In September of that year, Gurto saw a different doctor in the VA’s Foot and Ankle Clinic, who told him his ankle was improperly fused, resulting in his having to hyperextend his knee to be able to get his foot flat on the ground. Gurto had an additional left ankle fusion on March 9 but continued to complain of pain. Following an infection and excision of the wound and removal of a bone stimulator in February 2017, Gurto underwent a below-the-knee amputation of his left leg on April 23, 2019.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
What Practices Must do to Assure Payment for Telehealth in 2021 - Part 1

The flourishing of telehealth in 2020 was driven not just by necessity, but also by a significant loosening of governmental regulations and reimbursement requirements by payors. To ensure that you will continue to be paid for your telehealth services, here are three best practices you should be aware of:

1. Check to see if your state has proposed or passed legislation requiring insurance companies to cover telehealth.

Your local medical societies are often a good source of this information. Several states are already passing regulations regarding telehealth reimbursement requirements. Determine exactly what the regulations are in your state, who it affects, and when it goes into effect.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

I am truly saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Elba Chirel. It seems like yesterday when I attended Hy and Elba's wedding at the Swan Club on Long Island.

Having served with both Hy Chirel and Elba on the board of the Nassau County Division of the New York Podiatric Medical Association, I can honestly say that both Elba and Hy were two of the finest people I have ever worked with in our profession. They both had dedication and, even more so, integrity. Elba was president of our county society. Hy was president of our state society and served as executive director at a time when the strength of his character was badly needed. Elba's passing brings an end to a pleasant era in the history of our county society.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

I disagree with Dr. Lockwood's statement that flip-flops have come a long way. They are not a substitute for other shoes for living life in. They offer little support, stability, and balance as they force a change in gait patterns and biomechanics that is disastrous to young and old. Their simple design and their overuse (more flip-flops are sold in the USA than sneakers) are responsible for a host of injuries of the foot, lower leg, and posture that would be avoided by wearing more civilized footgear. Studies show that individuals with flat feet and other foot issues (most of us) should be advised to wear shoes with better support, stability, and balance properties.

Flip-flops foster pathological rearfoot pronatory moments and forefoot supinatory moments as they force the toes to grasp and hammer as stabilizers that more substantial shoes dampen. I have recently relocated from NYC to Tampa, FL and I am concerned as I visualize the active and youthful populations living in flip-flops 80% of the time (my own family) with disastrous biomechanical impact on their feet, postures, and their ability to perform tasks.

Summarily, flip-flops cannot be supportive and comfortable. They never will “come a long way” and there are no “good ones”.
