AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Award Events Honor Faculty and Students

In two separate events on May 7, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) recognized students and faculty who have distinguished themselves. At the Faculty Author Recognition event, 17 NYCPM faculty, staff, and administration as well as 12 students, were recognized for their contributions to scholarly writing through published research in 2014. Michael J. Trepal, DPM, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, said, "the number of awards being given today are an indication of the intellectual growth of our institution."

Rear (L-R) Jessica Botvinick, PT; Drs. Thomas DeLauro, Sharon Barlizo, Gregory Taylor, Mark Swartz, Anthony DiLandro, Randy Cohen, Peter Barbosa, Joy Reidenberg, Michael Trepal; Louis Levine, Pres and CEO. Front (L-R) Class of 2015 students Ankur Patel, Roger L. Kilfoil, Jr., Endri Afesllari, and Garry Shtofmakher.

That evening, 140 awards were given to students. Laurence Lowy, DPM, Dean for Student Services, described the average NYCPM student as“intelligent, motivated and dynamic,” but noted that the award winners were recognized for above-average academic achievement, community service, giving back to the College, and advancing the profession.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN CAUSES
ID Podiatrist Returns from Rescue Effort in Nepal

Dr. Fahim Rahim and a team of others from around the world spent the past two weeks in Nepal doing what they could to relieve suffering in the earthquake devastated country. Four of these team members were from Pocatello, including Dr. Kert Howard.

Dr. Kert Howard at clinic in Nepal

“They were totally overwhelmed,” Howard said of the physicians he met at the hospital in the city of Dhulikel. “There were 2-3 people per bed. They could not handle the volume of people.” Howard spent his days and nights running medical clinics and performing a marathon series of trauma surgeries. “Everything from the foot to the head was crushed,” Howard said of the various procedures he performed.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Many Foot Ailments are Caused by Improper Shoes: NH Podiatrist

Foot ailments know no boundaries; they affect the rich, poor, young and old. Diabetics are at particular risk of foot trouble and need to treat their feet with very special care, but in general, people don’t show their feet much love — until they have a problem. “People absolutely undervalue their feet until they have an issue, and then they feel it every step of every day,” says Peter Kasyjanski, DPM, a podiatrist at Granite State Podiatry Associates in Manchester.
Dr. Peter Kasyjanski

Foot woes can result from a variety of factors, but many of the conditions that podiatrists frequently see, share a common denominator: they involve footwear that provided inadequate support. Bunions, curled hammertoes, painful plantar fasciitis, fungal infections that cause nails to become thick, brittle, and discolored — the list of foot maladies linked with insufficiently supportive footwear goes on, Kasyjanski says, which is why choosing the right kind of shoe can make all the difference.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION
Interstate Medical License Compact Becoming a Reality

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley may have helped advance the cause of telemedicine Tuesday by signing a bill that enters Alabama into an interstate compact that will make it easier for physicians to have licenses in multiple states. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton also signed his own state's bill on Tuesday.

Seven states were needed to bring the compact to life, and Alabama and Minnesota joined Idaho, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming whose state legislatures had already passed bills to be on the compact roster. The states passed versions of model legislation drafted by the Federation of State Medical Boards, which has a policy stating that the practice of telemedicine occurs in the state where the patient—not the doctor—is located.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Tips to Collect More from Patients - Part 4

4. Use Technology to Your Advantage

As patients do more of their banking and bill-paying online, it's a good idea to offer them online bill pay. The easier it is for them to pay, the more likely it is they will pay. - Tom Furr, CEO, PatientPay, Inc.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Unidentified Lesions

My patient is a 30-year-old Afro American female who is 5'1" tall and weighs 250 pounds. Her only medical history is mild high blood pressure for which is not being treated. Her problems started when she was a child. There is no family history going back two generations as far as she knows, though she is not sure about her maternal grandparents.

Unidentified Lesions

There are no other lesions on any other part of her body. Any suggestions how to proceed for diagnosis and treatment?

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Coding a Drop Foot AFO

What is the proper code for a pre-molded AFO drop foot brace? Is it covered by Medicare? Must it be custom made?

Jay Lifshen, DPM, Irving, TX

Response: HCPCS L1930: Ankle foot orthosis, plastic or other material, prefabricated, includes fitting and adjustment

HCPCS L1940: Ankle foot orthosis, plastic or other material, custom-fabricated

You must indicate side "RT" or "LT", and it may need a "KX" modifier. Modifier KX is defined as "requirements specified in the medical policy have been met." It is appropriately used when additional documentation is available to support the medical necessary service under a medical policy.

RE: Celebrity Shoe of the Day

Michael Jordan's autographed shoes. His rookie shoe is on the left. The playoff shoe is on the right.

These are two of Michael Jordan's autographed shoes; one is playoff shoes worn in the year the Chicago Bulls won 70 games in the season. The other shoe is an autographed custom-made shoe from his rookie year, and includes patent leather. These are a very unique pair.
