Flip-Flops for Short-Term Use Only: NC Podiatrist
If you're a flip-flop wearer, you probably already know they aren't the most supportive form of footwear. Christina S. Long, DPM, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center recently told NewsWise that flip-flops should not be your only footwear.
|
Dr. Christina Long |
“Wearing flip-flops is better than going barefoot because they do provide some protection for the bottoms of your feet, but that’s about it,” said Long. “Flip-flops are fine for short-term use, especially if they have at least some arch support and a cushioned sole,” Long said. “They’re good to wear at the beach, around swimming pools, in showers and locker rooms at the gym, and on short trips to the store.”

Innovative Treatment Methods Can Prevent Amputations: Indian Podiatrist
The podiatric surgery department in the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is one of the few centrers of excellence in India in this field. "Diabetic foot surgery and modern management of diabetic foot problems are not given any prominence in our graduate and under-graduate medical courses, and so, young doctors have very limited exposure and skills in managing such patients. This is a great irony since we have many millions of people with diabetes and the burden of diabetic foot disease is very great in India, where diabetes is the commonest cause of amputations.
|
Dr. Harish Kumar |
Proper and efficient medical care with use of the latest technology and innovative treatment methods can prevent amputations in the majority of cases," said Dr. Harish Kumar, Professor in the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Podiatric Surgery, AIMS.

Aussie Podiatrist Couple Move into New Clinic
After 13 years of operating from a small house clinic on Walter Road, a Maylands podiatry pair hopes to stay at their new clinic located in the Morley. Galleria Podiatry owners Nic and Rachel Lange officially opened their purpose-built clinic last month, after being over-capacity at their old clinic. The new clinic has five rooms and seven podiatrists who help about 300 patients a week.
|
Nic and Rachel Lange |
Nic Lange, who became a podiatrist after experiencing knee pain as a young footballer, said the old clinic became uncomfortable for patients and staff, as the space was over-capacity. “We never wanted to have three or four satellite practices around Perth – we always just wanted to have one big consolidated practice, which is now what we have got.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
7 Financial Reports Your Practice Needs to Run - Part 6
Most physicians readily admit that classes on how to run a successful medical practice were not part of the curriculum in medical school. While "financial reporting," might not have been a class at your medical school, experts say you need to at least become familiar with understanding some of the basic reports. Here are seven to track.
6. Claim Denials - "Denied claims can lead to a cash-flow problem. When a practice does not follow up on a rejected claim, they are denying money owed to the practice. Study the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to determine the reasons for denied claims. Different payers, as well as Medicare, might be using different explanations and codes. Keep a log. This enables the practice to spot trends early as well as to act in a timely manner." - Ada Stewart, MD, AAFP Board of Directors

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
I agree with Dr. Shea. Shoes with memory foam insoles bottom out quickly. Some that are new just flatten out. They don't seem to have the resilience or density needed for ambulation. It is not the same as a memory foam mattress, where the weight is distributed over a large surface (our body). The weight distribution to the foot needs more resilience through the "gait cycle", which memory foam doesn't seem to provide. I tell patients that they make good house slippers to soften the hard tile floors but don't have the qualities of a running shoe. I cut several running shoes longitudinally to demonstrate those qualities and then discuss orthotics.
